The lady was very convincing. The young man was not really. But it was really an intense scene. More then the original (hence, pulling hair and kicking etc.) Though the giggling an laughing bothered me. Very immature and disrespectful to the actors. Though I've seen a S.A. performance (the intimate scene) in which people also laughed and made noise during this very important scene. Very rude!
Wendla was alright, but I really didn't like Melchior. Melchior's strong, confident, secure, maybe even a little arrogant. This guy came across as weasley, weak and unsure. So much so that the beating seemed completely unreal.
their laughing because their being immature. they thought it was funny when he made the noise when he hit her first. and then when got on top of her they took it sexually.
watching this has been really helpful - i'm playing wendla in an upcoming production of this play and this is one of the better representations i've found so far. thanks :)
look i havta admit im a teen and if i was in the audience i would also laugh... not at the fact that its someone getting bashed but because its on stage and its not real.. hopefully i dont sound like a typical teenager but yer i know that its rude to laugh but :( sorry
OMG I KNOW!!!! When I went to see a professional production of this show a few months ago (which was AMAZING) I couldn't BELIEVE people were laughing...WHAT THE HELL?!?! Who laughs at someone being beaten?? And it wasn't the I'm-uncomfortable type of chuckling either, they were actually giggling. It pissed me off. My friend explained that they're probably the people who knew nothing about the show but came to see it because they heard there was sex on stage. uggh. idiots. >_<
the beating itself and after was done well, but the bits leading up to it were a bit rough. i would work on figuring out the purpose of each line; that always helps me.
Thanks for your imput. Could you help me with exact lines where you think it is a little rough? we would like to go forth with this scene. It would be great if we could get it perfect.
make sure you don't get overrun with hand gestures (try to keep physical movement "tighter"), have more eye contact during the middle of the scene, and consider the time period and how boys and girls were rarely alone together, like melchior says.
and it all depends on how you want to interpret things: i don't think melchior needs to literally put his head in his hands on that line...but that's just me. oh and heads up, wendla is a german name so it's usually pronounced vendla.
physically, if something feels awkward, then it probably looks it. this is supposed to be an awkward scene though so don't lose sight of that. mainly, consider what happens in all the scenes prior to this one.
sorry about the rambling, i hope it helps. you really have got a lot going for you. good luck.
@Jimithy09 the audience was laughing because it was kind of done in the wrong tone...i ddid this play with my highschool last year and i was melchior. the audience didnt laugh at all because they were stunned
my highschool is doing this and im melchior gonna be siiiiiiiiiiiickkkk

Wow. That was fantastic :) As good as the Jonathan/Lea rendition. Definitely earned that award :)

My 2 friends just did this scene in acting class yesterday and it was almost as intense as this. Both extremely brutal and believable

I hate it when people laugh during a scene like this. Its not funny. I guess they laugh because they're uncomfortable. this is a hard scene to do.

Another reason people laugh is because of the inuendo that comes with a beating scene. At least that's what made me smirk at first.

i went over the limit a tad much, so here's more:
physically, if something feels awkward, then it probably looks it. this is supposed to be an awkward scene though so don't lose sight of that. mainly, consider what happens in all the scenes prior to this one.
