I don't agree with every position on the list (I'm gonna get hate, but there is no way Cliff Burton was a better player than Marcus Miller), but it's a solid list, and every player on there is exceptional
this list was full of shit where is Louis Johnson at ?And larry graham wrong number marcus miller wrong number vicktor wotten wrong number and Gitty Lee wrong number!!!!!!!
After much thought about how i was gonna rag on this guy for missing hamm n jamerson n some other folk, i've decided to say: stop ragging on this poor guy. i could make a list of the top 30 bass players in the world, then look at it and give myself shit for missing someone.
No disrespect, but can someone please explain to me why Lemmy would be on the greatest top 10, 20 or 50 of any list? Vocals, bass playing writing etc. I will admit that I haven't listened to his catalog, but I just don't get it at all. I know that he has been in the game forever and I respect that, but for the life of me as far as his bass playing goes I have never heard ANYTHING melodic come from his fingers. He plays basic rock bass lines, nothing technical whatsoever. Just my two cents
@TheBeaglebite AC/DC has one of the most boring, uncreative, and least skilled bassists of all time. He plays the same note or two every song, worst bassist ever
@throwsand The man just said: don't mind the order. Yes Paul McCartney just deserves to be among The Best bass players ever. You must listen to the lines he came up with. Some players just make some sound, others make music instead. Enough of dirty and useless show off from those so called "musicians"
@papagaio1696 I agree that most of the guys here just make up sounds. Why do all these compilation consist of players doing solos? Can't they even play with their bandmates? It's the same with guitarists too. Paul Mccartney has written some beautfiful bass lines but I wouldn't put him in the same class as Jack Bruce as a bass player. Jack Bruce is a forgotten name and is perhaps the man most responsible for modern bass playing.
steve bailey higher... marcus miller higher... john myung also... Les claypool should be lower and there was no ryan martinie in list which was huge disappointment... just sayin :P
this is a crap list... bassists like paul mccartney and should be somewhere at the back and pros like geddy lee, stanley clarke, billy sheehan and john entwistle and obvious legand should be right in front!
@explorer1243 Cliff shouldn't have been number 1. He is my all time favorite bassist, but there is no way he is number 1. 5 was about the right spot for him
I think this list should've been done in no specific order, because you can't really rank bassists from completely different genres. Like I'm sure Flea could do stuff Cliff Burton couldn't do and vice versa, right? Oh, and also, you forgot James Jamerson!
Pretty good, I would have had Stanley Clarke much higher, and I would have had Mark King and Louis Johnson on there. But every one has a different list. :)
Even if the whole world dislikes Level42 ... but Mark King has to be in this list. Same story for all the Steve Vai haters, Bryan Beller should be in here as well
lol, cliff was a good bass player, but please... if he was alive today he would not be talked so much about. I respect him and everything but there are/ were so many better bass players outthere.
Please explain to me how Paul McCartney got in this list. How did he get ahead of Stanley Clarke, Bootsy Collins, Larry Graham......or any one on that list. Although he is a great song writer artist.
Where is Alphonso Johnson, Louis Johnson and James Jamerson? Marcus Miller # 24, Larry Graham not in the top 5 or even 10 and he created the slap style that everyone plays. This list can’t be creditable……lol.
My mind is still blown away by this list. Stanley Clarke, the man that in the early 70’s to the present, single handedly pioneered, liberated, technically and lyrically advanced the instrument as a solo instrument and became the standard is ranked at number 10. Also, created the only solo bass anthem album (School Days) that showed the range and possibility of the bass as a lead solo instrument, this list is not even creditable when you have the most important bassist at number 10.
les claypool is very very good, but compared to entwistle? He pretty muh pioneered bass playing and you have people like jaco a wooten above him. Dont get me wrong, they are all very good but larry graham and john entwistle need to be bumped up big time
I'm with you almost all the way. But, Stanley Clark at #10? If there had been no Stanley Clark, there would have been no Flea, There would have been no Les Claypool. Dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants. They were or are all great musicians, but Stanley Clark was the catalyst that elevated the bass to the next highest level. He set the benchmark by which all others are measured. The musician never asks "How was that compared to Jaco?" it's "How was that next to next to Stanley?"
@darthclown1 Amen........! Shit, number 10 is this guy out of his mind, crazy or does he just not know a damm thing about bass, shit. Stanley Clarke at number 10........shit. "Maybe" a flip of the coin between number 1 and 2 depending on who your talking with, but shit Stanley is the damm standard for any bass player, ever. He liberated and invented solo bass.
@mp22bb Are you tone deaf or just stupid gene is a great bass player if not the best so shut up the only person better is Nikki Sixx if you dont like both of them you are retarded
@madstork99 I understand KISS is probably your favorite band but they are highly overrated in my opinion and yea he has a big name that people are familiar with but no where near the top of all time bass players. I mean if you honestly think Nikki Sixx and Gene Simmons are 1 2 in best bassists of all time you lose credibility already and you're just picking 2 of the biggest groups I'm guessing in your time frame and are personal favorites.
This isn't a bad list per se. Many of the legends are accounted for. Except, how the hell do you not have James Jamerson?!?
