you see how close that car was when it merged? but being serious, you're never in control. Too bad when it malfunctions or when it doesn't calculate correctly and your family goes off a cliff. If you try to manual override it you'll get in trouble.
If it drives more skillfully and carefully than us humans do, then I'm all for it. It's a shame how many people die because of someone else's stupidity behind the wheel. Just don't make the cars TOO smart.
am i the only one here who actually enjoys driving and doesn't like the idea of just being a passenger in my own car?....or are all of you just bad drivers?
@chucknorrisgawd isnt about being good driver/ bad driver. it's about changing technology. What would you reply to a stone-aged man when he says "Dude you are a lazy a**., you can walk that distance" after seeing you driving 1-2 mile. its good for health to walk too. isn't it! so the picture is different here too.
@vijil I'm still a little curious how this would work properly with some people not driving their cars on the road and others who do....I bet if you had to go into the opposite lane to avoid an obstacle the car might not do that for you? i dont know, it is impressive how far tech has come though...
@jacobxtothez yea maybe i should say that since most Americans are fat, they can finally eat their cheeseburgers without getting into a car accident lol.
@BlackOpAim The video camera detects colors and shapes while the lidar will be able to detect the shape of the stop sign as well. For some reason people think a big red object with the word STOP printed on it would be hard for the car to see. From personal experience with autonomous challenges, path planning and predicting the behavior of other objects (in this case cars) is much more difficult. Say for instance a car has its turn signal on but doesn't turn or how to tell the difference..(con't)
Who will fix the car's flat tire, if no human will be in the car?
Who will fix the car's maintenance, car trouble, overheated engine, battery?
Who will fill it up with gasoline, unless it runs on electricity, sunpowered?
There is no point to put an automated car on the road without human intervention, like I said before, what is the point? Waste of time. It's like if every car on the road today is driving without a human inside, so what is the point?
@CloneH38 Obviously a human would always be in the car if these things go on the market. The reason you buy a car is for transportation. Why would you tell a car to go somewhere without you in it?
Google never suggested their cars were to be used for any purpose other than transportation. The point of the car is to use new technology as a substitute for human reaction time etc.. so that there are less accidents.
@uniqueuserrname Well your second idea would be a HUGE waste of fuel and car lifetime.
I don't know where you are at that workers park on the streets, but this is not done in mega-cities (i.e. New York, Chicago, etc.) that I know of. People going to work park in parking garages--much cheaper. The cars parked on streets are people going to stores, restaurants, and such.
But, having the car go pick up kids from wherever could be quite useful...as long as they can get it back! XD
Automated cars will be driving YOU, not themselves. It means that the disabled and elderly or perhaps even those too young to drive themselves may finally be able to take advantage of the convenience of using a car without needing other people with them.
What would be the point and purpose of a car to drive without human intervention, very stupid I think, unless it is a truck delivering some goods from point A to point B, but even that would be dangerous. It would be faster for merchandise and goods to be transported by an automated rail system, rather than an automobile to drive on its own, there is no point for this to happen. Why put another car on the road, without anybody in it. Isn't the point of technology to get less cars on the road?
@Shakenbake50391 Heh. Tell that to the cop that pulls you over. Do you think Google is gonna take the rap for you? No open alcohol in the car laws will still exist. Especially if you sit behind the wheel. As soon as the blue lights go on, robocar will comply.

@BlackOpAim We probably wouldn't need stoplights.. Cars could communicate to each other and tell each other when to stop and go..

If the system was really safe this would be awesome! being able to summon you car to any location like a taxi and send it to pick people up.

"Why would you tell a car to go somewhere without you in it?"
1) children, old people, unconsious people transported.
2) car drives you to work, drives home. No parked cars on the street. Or - you dont own a car. Taxis everywhere take people places. veeeeery cool.

@CloneH38 It is at least 100 times easier to change tires with a robot then to make a self driving car.
