Yes, purchasing a piece of mining equipment is like purchasing any machine. But what is a civilian going to do with a machine designed to strip overburden, that's as large as a two story house, and cost $3.5 million?

not to sound stupid but whats the difference between a shovel and a backhoe?

Backhoe configuration is what your looking at right here, also called a "Mass excavator". A Front shovel configuration has the bucket facing the opposite way. The idea is two different digging setups. A hoe normally will sit ontop of a lift and load trucks from above, what you call "bench loading". A shovel sits on the same level as a truck and digs into the lift.

Yes and no. The machines are very close. Size wise, a pc3000 is a tad bit larger than a 9250 and weighsa little more, but capacity wise, the 9250 can hold a larger bucket than the 3000 can.

Why do you call it a back hoe?, I always thought back hoes were the hoes on the back of a tractor like loader. They call this a back hoe at my mine too everone thinks its normal so Ive never said anything about it.

It's the proper name for an excavator over 120 tons is "Backhoe/ME". Look on any corporate website and they'll refer to a machine like this as "Backhoe/ME arrangment" or (if it's a front shovel) "Shovel arrangment". Most people usually call them Backhoe's for short, either is correct though.
