i don't play multiplayer but prince's front line was absolutely demolished after the chariot run, imho, his oppenent should've sent his swordsmen running right after the charrriots.

also when the swordsmen did come, prince could've flanked them with his reserves at 15:56.

In Ancient Roman warfare, the testudo or tortoise formation was a formation used commonly by the Roman Legions during battles, particularly sieges. (Testudo is the Latin word for "tortoise".) In the testudo, the men would close up all gaps between each other and grab their shields at the sides... The primary problem with the formation was that it was so tight that the soldiers had great difficulty fighting in hand-to-hand combat. Found this on the forum and the did their homework. Simple plan: Send chariots around behind you, spread out out your reserves. Start to move chariots away to mess with your head. Something like that.

actually prince, the romans attacking in testudo formation like that in the movie is historically accurate. we spent a whole latin class talking about roman military tactics and the romans would attack in testudo in cases where they were either surrounded or out-numbered. great battle btw.

@legolean2 Actually, Legolean2, NO, you're wrong. Sorry, but Latin Class is not to be mistaken for a Military History class.

Testudo means the soldiers can't fight too well because they can't thrust with their shields ovelapping. Testudo was used when the enemy had arrows pouring on them. It was NOT used for crowd control. For crowd control, you need only look to Boudica's rebellion. At Watling Street, the Romans build rows upon wedges with shields locked to deal with the hordes.

@PrinceofMacedon Prince of Macedon is correct. just think of common sense, you can't wield a sword without any room to use it (even one as short as a gladius) testudo was primarily used for siege when making their way up to an enemies walls and their own ladders, and also when they were surrounded by archer fire

@PrinceofMacedon Isn't it possible that that if they were being attacked by air they could form testudo, and the first couple of layers could fend off cav and infantry attacks. I mean yeah of course it's not preferable, but in desperation............ I guess after awhile it would be ugly, but if i was surrounded that's what I'd do. Keep tight and stay disciplined and not attack.

@PrinceofMacedon Rise of Nations is a rather simple game, and I think you'd be pretty good at it. I highly recommend it, as I have been playing it for the past 6 years. It isn't in the same scope as Total War (unless you use an unlimited population mod) but it is sure a hell of a game. It's requirements are low too, so if you can load Rome to your computer, you'll easily be able to load RoN.

@PatriotGabe I never read the book, but the movie itself is rather slow, and it's filled with horrendous acting (inexcusable for a big-budget Hollywood production), and the Roman tactics shown look awfully bad (border-line unrealistic).

That said i do think his chariots did a pretty good job at the start messing up you front 2 lines. A good game btw :)

The Britons did surprisingly well...i thought in a confined space, against archer fire and being kettled by Urbans they'd be slaughtered. Still no idea why u were worried about his chariots...chariots are useless inside city walls, they can't manoevre and get bogged down. surprise, surprise that's exactly what happened here. good battle though.

@kaelim888 I can assure you chariots are not useless in a city. Their morale effect coulve easily caused a mass rout. I don't think you guys appreciate the value of head hurlers and chariots in a city. You've seen me slaughter romans in a city before and I was even using equal money as my opponent (unlike this battle where my opponent had double the amount of money as me).
