Honestly, I don't find Briony clueless, but rather knows exactly what she is doing. While having good intentions for her sister, I think she is actually angry, betrayed and can't face the fact that Robbie is in love with Cecilia and not her. She just on some level doesn't want to live with that and convinced her self that Robbie is the bad guy who's raping her sister and has to go away.

It was not only the tragedy of misunderstanding that led to the heroines downfall, but the fact none of the characters made an attempt to fill the knowledge gaps causing the misunderstanding.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense. Just an idea.

I can't really hate Briony, she's jealous, she saw the letter and saw them making love. so its a combination of misinterpretation and wanting it to be him. she wants him to be a bad person, because she has a crush on him, yet he loves Cecilia. she's too young to conmprehend that she is jealous, but she is. and its just tragic how the imagination, ingorance and feelings of a child completely ruined their lives ..

Actually, Cassabc I think it was merely from Briony's childish imagination alone, not jealousy that caused so many people so much grief. If you recall in the actual book, when she is 18yrs old talking to Cee and Robbie in Cee's apartment when Robbie is on leave and it mentions that she had a crush on him but when she came out with it and confessed it to Robbie as a child she immediately forgot it. And yes, zhankibaika, it was Paul Marshall.

actually if you read the book you find it is completely the other way around. Briony actually states that she stopped loving him that day which was when she was 10. She had forgotten about it Robbie just thought she did. She had an over active imagination and believed it was Robbie but when she grew up she realised. I'm studying it for Alevel it is definitely not spite.
