I feel rather sorry for these kids, they never seemed to have the choice, this life was decided for them, almost like being in the mafia. The matriarch said that Emilia was born and would marry in the circus, I pity them.

No Circus family MAKES their kids go into this life, dumbo...but the kids are exposed to it, all the travelling and rehearsals etc...who WOULDN'T want to do it? also, it has been said by many researchers that a travelling or circus community is actually one of the safest environments...all the kids have so many adults looking out for them.
