  • I love this song, just wish it didn't have that weird electric sound every few seconds.

  • @OddManSam That's my favourite bit!

  • @RussellThePumpkin yeah well, we all have opinions, mate. and That's okay. <3

  • @OddManSam I LOVE that weird electric sound. haha

  • This song is just amazing! Words can't describe how much I love this song. Its so well put together, and only 1 dislike, that is incredible!

  • As far as post-punk is concerned, I much prefer the sparse, atmospheric, gothic, ghostly, disco-flavoured pseudo-industrial, proto-new wave stylings of Joy Division, as opposed to The Smith's pop-flavoured softer-side-of-alternative-rock consigns of depression.

However, I have to admit that this song strikes the same resonant chord as nearly anything from the Joy Division catalogue.

  • @HoleHeadedLiar hahaha

  • I used to watch Charmed when I was a lil girl, I love The Smiths ever since <3

  • I luv the whistle in the song

  • Comment removed

  • were if x is were you mean,

  • I never really got into the smiths in a big way but they did make some class tunes. This though, has to be one of THE best songs ever made in the history of music.

  • The whistling on this KILLS me

  • That's not a picture of Johnny Marr, that was a picture of Ian Curtis of Joy Division.

  • This song, along with Hippie Chick, (tube it) ....totally blow me away. 2 of the best sounds from the 80's, lyrics too.

  • Brilliant.

  • i cant say anything else but hauntingly brilliant, i am 52 yrs old and never liked the smits cos of their political views, meat is murder etc, but i dont think another song has ever got to my musical soul like this one.mot

  • i thought the advertisement was the song lol

  • This (especially the beginning) seems to have been influenced by the Stones' version of Mona.

  • A great song from back in my day and still sounds good today :)

  • One of the greatest songs written in the last 25-30 yearsx

  • Morrissey is the only man on Earth who made me question my heterosexuality.

  • fucking great

  • Um, Johnny Marr is not Ian Curtis. After Marr's name comes up, a picture of Curtis is shown...

  • He was the son & the heir of Dwayne motors limited in everett washington usa & killed himself because his father could not accept the fact he is gay. was gay.

  • ₪₪₪₪₪₪₪●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬►Shan23 Studios◄▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●₪₪₪₪₪₪₪

I love ♥ this Song ♥ Thank You

  • I just spent the last 6 minutes of my life thanking god for this song.

  • hey, Charmed is starting lol

  • This song makes me feel like a hipster.

  • We all know Jonny Marr is a guitar god, but this really shows Mike Joyces skills, a very simple, primitive and effective drum sound

  • The Smiths's greatest song ;takes me back......

  • One of the best bands, best songs EVER!!!!

  • from all the acid house trips at wigan pier we went to it was always this song that brought us back down on the drive home to Eccles on a sunday morning. wish i was 18 again

  • Thanks man. Since 1984 this is the best song I know.

  • sound of manchester!!!

  • every word is meaningful, if it is written by Morrissey of course.

  • the person who pressed the dislike button was having a seizure or summat, I am just certain

  • that is indeed ian curtis at 2:19

  • I'm pretty sure at 2:19 that's not Johnny Marr, but is in fact Ian Curtis.

  • It's just too bad that Morrisey is a prick IRL.

  • @n3cr0fil3 Dislike!

  • although its a very depressing song, the beat of it motivates me

  • love this tune must have played it 12 times in a row..god bless morrisey

  • This is a great sound, but the subtitles creap me out

  • Do you think we can't speak english? The Smiths in subtitles, a bit American I guess?

  • @Mykevin67

Do you think that English is a native language of everyone who visits Youtube?

  • @DedaTrole No. I watch many videos in other languages and I don't expect subtitles. Music can be universal, you don't always need the exact words. The spirit and mood of the music can move you no matter the words, especially with a group like The Smiths.

  • @DedaTrole no one speaks "English" anymore

  • Last year, I went to a meeting for single people that lasted a day and I found no-one who pleased me. I left well before the end of this meeting and I remember thinking: "it's time I sang How Soon Is Now by the Smiths!"

  • this song rocks!!!

  • Really disheartening to see all these ignorant, fear based homophobic comments. So much hate still. We have a long way to go I suppose. My main worry is kids seeing all this hatred. So unhealthy for them.Best Smiths tune EVER,by the way. Thanks for posting the long version.Cheers

  • fuckin crackin tune!!!!!!!

  • I'm going to lock Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga in a room with this song on repeat in the background. Then maybe we might get some good music.

  • Digitech has a patch on the GNX guitar processors that substantially more than a simple tremolo effect and it's pretty close.

I'm surprised they pulled it off considering the amount of effort it took for Johnny Marr..........who makes everything look easy.

  • 1 person goes home and cries and now they want to die.

  • A seriously BRILLIANT piece of music from the eighties. Of COURSE it puts the shit we have to listen to now in the shade!

  • As seriously FUCKING TREMENDOUS piece of music.

    Just brilliant.

  • As seriously FUCKING TREMENDOUS piece of music.

    Just brilliant.

  • THANX!!!!!

  • DADAIST CoolBDown, INC.

  • Amazing song. The Smiths are great! LOVE THEM! <3 <3

  • Original, 6-minute version for the win. Great song from a great music era, the likes of either will never be seen again.

Music seems to be going down a similar path that mankind follows in "Idiocracy."

  • This song just about describes my life.

  • You can be a genius and GAY , have respect ...\

  • @MissRaccoon3 yep

  • @MissRaccoon3 Examples: Freddie Mercury, Rob Halford, Oscar Wilde.

  • EVERYONE!!! stop bringing up charmed and deadpool...i get it they were awesome shows!!!! but just be glad you can hear the original version!

  • @toolfangirl Charmed was crap for the most part.

  • Everyone making music today should be forced to listen to this track on a loop until it sinks in what real music is.

  • possibly, uhm, ok it is, the greatest song ever written in the 80s. A tireless classic, in fact the most. They know, i know, you know. It is the most top 10 over the past 2-generations. This song never dies & someday when we are all dead, it will survive.

  • "I am the shyest of the shy. I am divine."

    - Egon Schiele

  • Thank you.

  • I love this song as it was originally sung, by the Smiths. To say that this version is 'much better than the version they used in charmed' is putting it too nicely.

  • @ArvelJoffi

    @LiquorWreckedEmGood

Whats with all the homophobic comments? Being gay is just as natural as being straight or bi. It's normal, and okay. Now, take your Westboro bullshit, and go straight to hell.

    I LOVE THE SMITHS

  • The one person who disliked this song is that "one fucking person" who is always there wherever you go to fuck you up.

  • @Bionic3333 1 dislike. that's funny lol

  • @Bionic3333 so true

  • heard this movie first in Closer, then later i recognized it in the background of a scene in The Wedding Singer. and had to find out what it was! :)

  • lol, only 1 dislike.

  • Comment removed

  • this song puts me in a trance.

  • @maven1818 your lucky!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @LiquorWreckedEmGood

He should be proud. Proud to embrace who he is. Who he loves. And yes, who he fucks. I think he's a terrible singer and lyricist (and ruined a good band by fronting them), but if he loves men or women or both, more power and more love to him.

  • @ArvelJoffi

on the contrary, i think morrissey is a great singer and lyricist. fresh, original, energetic, the perfect front man for the smiths.

however, getting your rocks off banging other men in the asshole has nothing to do with love.

  • @ArvelJoffi So, what are you here for?

Watch a gay pride parade or something. I hate the meaning of this song, but I do love the actual music.

  • @LiquorWreckedEmGood Judging musicians because of their sexuality is pretty lame.

  • @SX1995able

Morrissey's arrogance and opinionated nature have nothing whatsoever to do with his sexuality. Furthermore, I "judged him" as "a great artist".

Other than that you were spot on.

    Idiot.

  • @LiquorWreckedEmGood Morrissey is so good at being Morrissey, you shouldn`t even care if he`s arrogant or not.

  • @SX1995able

oh! i am SO glad that i've found you! please give me a list of the things i SHOULD care about. i've been looking all over the place for mine but can't seem to find it.

  • @SX1995able gnr fans say the same about axl

  • This song got played like 4 times on q101s last day

  • Thais is the best version, in my opinion. I LOVE THE MUSIC.

  • This is beautiful.

  • I always remember this from a Pepe ad that used to play in the cinema around 86/87. Something to do with a raindance, a girl and a boy walking down a street, then it rains, and they take shelter in a shop doorway, and meet. Awesome sound from Johnny Marr's eerie guitar and Morrissey's agonised whaling.

  • i've been sharing this like a motherfucker lately =0)

  • @D4RKH4LO riiiiight. Because I don't share the same shitty tastes as you, and have a different opinion, that means I don't know true music. Spoken like a true elitist.

  • @Canny911 You must be trolling. I'll humor you though. Shitty music comes from England? Ever hear of the British invasion? The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, etc. etc. If it was so shitty, why was it so popular in the U.S.? Trolls these days...

  • @D4RKH4LO lmao, music from England is the best. You named like four shitty fucking bands after the Smiths. Good things may have come from England, but music isn't one of them.

  • Awesome song. Awesome band. Thanks for uploading the full version!!

  • Is it ironic that I got dumped on the same day I found out what this song meant? :/ (I know the topic on the song is sightly different).

  • Who's the tosser who disliked this?? Effing song rocks. I can listen to Johnny Mar hit that guitar riff over and over. Which this song does.

  • @bro25man : I fucking Lol'ed wwhen I heared that xD Then I thought " respect". and decided to point out the possibility of them missing the button, which I genuinly believe happened.

  • The Smiths in charmed? What the fucki! Still least the girls in it were well fit. LOL

  • 1 dislike - what a fucking bellend that person is.

  • I was the only black kid in my neighbor hood who knew about the smiths and this song lol!

  • How did they know i was Reading/Singing along?

  • from the CRAFT the movie

  • o you all shut your mouths!! Comment.....all the lads are of irish background with english sensibility. what a wonderful conbination. morrissey rules.

  • Insane

  • 1 smartass person knew how soon now is and pressed dislike! ;)

  • Thanks for the upload - this is THE iconic song of the 1980's - "Give me my 80's music!!!"

  • i'm puzzled as to why they didn't make a video clip for the full version!!?? so many powerful lyrics cut out of the short version!!

  • johnny marr is a wizard.

  • @dreadedwheat26 and Morrissey is the brains, put them together and the kings of alternative rock are born...i first heard this one back in 2003 and loved it ever since that year....The Smiths are one of my favouritest rock bands of all time, do you like the smiths too? :)

  • @Pittking86 that would be an understatement. love the smiths. i cant ever remember hearing a bad smiths song. best band of the past 30 years? probably so. have you ever heard the song "this night has opened my eyes"? if not, check it out. absolute genius.

  • Way to go Wendy! The long version is best, and you are so right about the lyrics.

  • i'm so glad my favourite tv show used this song as their theme tune, it's amazing

  • Thanks for taking the time to do this but ...."I before E except after C".

  • This song just makes you go out and start a fucking RIOT!!!!

  • Morrissey = GODrrissey!

  • effing perfect video !!

  • You say it's gonna happen now. But when exactly do you mean? See I've already waited too long, and all my hope is gone

    More Smiths. MOAR SMITHS.

  • Thanks for posting!

One of the most beautiful songs ever written/recorded.

  • Class upload . How soon is now ?

  • This is one of the few songs, where an edited version is available,(Won't Get Fooled Again, I Am The Resurrection, Freebird) which you really need to hear unexpurgated.

  • underrated

  • dude awesome upload! thanks alot! haha im only 14 and i love shit like this. im not into that pop/ hiphop shit they put out today on the radio. i rather go back to the 70s-90s :D

  • @KARNIVIGITERIAN i would go 60s- 90s, you know beatles, stones, doors.. :)

  • @KARNIVIGITERIAN don't judge music of today by the radio garbage. These guys were indie for a reason

  • @ASDMarauder007 Indie=love

  • @KARNIVIGITERIAN You have great musical ear and brain! <3

  • Thanks ; much appreciated :-)

  • This sounds like the version I always heard. I guess the "regular" one was a radio edit or something that cut out instrumentals. But yes, wonderful song.

  • so you go and you stand on your own and you leave on your own and you go home and you cry and you want to die.

  • i love this version

the lyrics with it make one more attached to it

some one wanted to be loved.

some how this song is a lot more personal than i would want it to be

i cant word it in any other way

  • my last comment was supposed to be a reply comment to patries1002 but youtube didn't do it right.

  • its a song for all the people who don't fit in.

"i am the son and the heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar"

It essentially means that he has nothing going for him in life and he want's to feel like he belongs.

  • You did a fantastic job posting this rare treat........ THANKS SOOOOO MUCH !!!!!

  • This song...

    It's like an audio mirror...

  • that is an awesome way of putting it!

  • bra-fucking-vo

  • reminds me abit of i wanna be adored. im not saying it sounds like it just seems to be saying the same sort of thing. though i supose it says many things lol so maybe not ay

  • I respect all comments and "i wanna be adored" is up there..but this song IS an a classic..and touches the soul..best riff on any song i've listened to. PS 46 from HULL

  • spot on mate.

  • My buddy Helmet (austrian porsche exec.) was mad about missing lunch one day.

He walked up and said "I am human and I need eat lunch" causing somebody to say "like everybody else does?"

Much laughter echoed through the dealership.

  • did he get the joke? or did you have to go make him listen to the song so that he'd get it?

  • @Icepacalapse that must of been epic! i love when things like that happen, we were talking about the relationship between the Oasis brothers in a lesson a while back and our teacher was telling us about how they fell out.She asked for opinions and someone said that they shouldn't 'look back in anger' :)

  • @Icepacalapse worst story ever

  • @Icepacalapse Thanks for letting us know that he's an Austrian Porsche Exec. That was arguably the most essential part of your story. None of it would have made sense without it.

  • on the flip side this song was also like a line of coke, addictive, you can feel the excitement in your belly upon hearing it.

it forced you to connect, good or bad.

  • i always thought the beginning lyric was "i am the sun. i am the air..."

then the rest of the lyrics i would sort of make up too if i didn't know them.

it was like reading an endless book printed on parchment paper and bound in leather.

you never got tired of trying to figure out every facet of this diamond of a song.

  • can listen this song hours long

  • i know yeah, my favourite song of all time.

powerfull lyrics and johnny marr blows me away with his guitar.

  • Super job on the video! Also, props to you for putting up the long version of the song. OK, don't kill me for saying this but you have a couple small mistakes in the lyrics.

"And you say it's gonna happen now

But when exactly do you mean?"

    is actually

"When you say it's gonna happen 'now'

Well, when exactly do you mean?"

If you give it a close listen again, you'll hear it.

Again, thanks for posting this...great job mixing in the band pics with the music.

  • best song of all time!

  • Killer Tune* saw Johnny Marr* ;))
