  • Harry Potter is evil? Hey if its on the internet I'll believe it!

  • I must say that woman is probably the first Christian I've seen who has told us where Harry Potter actually stands for us, which is in the continuous battle between good and evil, with good always winning :) and Harry being on the good side. It's really just another way on expressing love <3 which is the best gift we probably have. So I take my hat off to the Professor, well done!

  • Why does everyone say Harry Potter is evil and is against god? It has underline Christian themes and J.K. even said that.

  • There is nothing wrong with Paganism, it was around before Christianity, and it's about time someone finally spoke intelligently about the situation with the harry potter series, it's just a book, period. As is constantly stated, if you don't like it, stay away from it, but before you criticize it, actually do research on it, and understand it. As i recall, "Judge not lest ye be judged"- remember you will reap what you sow.

  • grrrrrrrr for the freaking first 10 min. she's talking about something i really dont care about >:O

  • found this talk most illuminating. Thank you so much. At last i have begun to understand the philosophy of St Augstine.

  • there needs to be a spoiler alert on this video, the books just got ruined for me!

  • @karasarahbcgee you have no right to say that. not believing in something does not make someone scared. all it makes them is their own person. think about that the next time you judge someone who says that they dont believe in god and try to put your self in their position. my friend is an athiest (sorry if i spelled that wrong) because she says that her parents tried to force religion on her and that everytime something bad happened and she prayed to god, her life only got worse. i believe in

  • @karasarahbcgee god as well as magic. i use both in my writings along with greek and japanese mythology along with other supernatural entities. religion is meant to give people faith and something to believe in by personifying (again sorry) the creator who none of us have actually met before. that doesnt stop us from balieving. essentially (sorry) religion is to give hope to the hopeless or faith to those who have none. it is meant to be a guiding light with a promise of something after death

  • Good can exist without evil, but evil cannot exist without good. Can't wait for eternity after the millenium Kingdom =); and satan, that old dragon is cast into the lake of fire the second death.

  • @WTFilm brilliant retort. well spoken, well versed and so thought out. Tell me what grade did you drop out of school? Your ignorance is overwhelming. Your insight lacking. Knowledge is power, as is intelligence. You gift of discourse is rather, small. This woman is brilliant, you are just too narrow minded and uneducated to be able to see it.

  • Harry Potter isn't evil

  • @hurricaneCFMB I'm a Christian, but I don't think Harry Potter is evil... It's only wrong if you go off and try to cast spells and worship Satan...

  • harry potter = brainwashing american kids....do u ever see a popular kids book that promotes good or peace..nope not really and def never on harry potters level that derty witch id break that pussies wand and clap the shit out of him brooklyn

  • @kraftiztoxic I can't really tell if you're joking or not...

  • @kraftiztoxic I can't really tell if you're joking or not...

  • Whats up with all the thumbs down for anyone saying Harry Potter's not some satanic book? Trolls?

Harry Potters a great kids book. Its a great action, fantasy story and it got a lot of kids into reading in the late 90's and early 2000's who otherwise might not have picked up any books.

Its only big underline moral seems to be about the power of friendship, love and family. What the hell is wrong with that?? o.o

  • @SilentFishHeads What's wrong with it is they make themselves Gods. Trusting in their own power, their own united abilities. Thats what is wrong. The sudden interest in the cult is what is so troubling in young children.

Sometimes it is better to not read at all then to read something harmful. Only a fool would be happy their son read a erotic novel because its a book. So I enjoyed the one harry potter, and twilight book. Does not mean its good or should be read by the young.

  • @DeathlyDavid The "Stone age" as you call it is actually more advanced then us in certain areas. We can't with technology duplicate some of their feats. Fun fact: their larger cities had indoor plumbing. Figure that one out. Religion led the way to enlightenment through the Protestants and in the middle east with Islam in their golden age during Europe's dark times. The Mongolian empire brought eastern ideas to Europe. Shame on you for skipping your history.

  • @DeathlyDavid Wow learn your history before you speak about it please. Over in India way before the Greeks or Romans they had plumbing in their cities. Just for your fact later Rome and Greece were polytheistic so there were gods sorry burst you bubble. And the reformation broke the church's power which is how the renaissance happened who most of them were God fearing had honored him above man. (The church).

  • @DeathlyDavid 1. European history is skewed perhaps even more then your media says about american history. 2. Gods anything is still religion so that proves nothing for you. 3. Do you know what myth is? Look up the first mean. Seeing as Catholics are mostly what you know no wonder Europe is still screwed over in the head concerning religion. In a XXXX years It could prove to be right. What's the point of playing that game? And I know its not a myth because I know healings have happened. But

  • @DeathlyDavid More importantly I never take miracles seriously for long. I see it in the history is the minds of humanity in their hatreds and hostilities, in their compassion and love, and in our archeology. If there was no God I don't think the 'bible' would have serviced the odds stacked against it.

  • @DeathlyDavid Wouldn't have survived* I hate the return button.

  • @Method12321 I think the argument has strayed from the point. I do acknowledge that religion can be beneficial ie. people learning to read to read the bible. But, religion has become in some parts of the world a kind of cult where people are killing each other in the "name of their religion"

  • @DeathlyDavid "Islam did have more tech but so what?" lol afraid of my point? Lol the priests? Thats your A material? Thats sad. And religion saved greek and roman ideas as you've said yourself some churches hid the artifacts rendering your own point moot. Like so many Christians, Atheists, Gays and Straights. You take what your told and run with it. Can't be bothered to look for yourself. For all man accomplishes the earlier point being they always fail with time. The two towers, titanic...

  • This is hilarious

  • I serious doubt that anyone person who reads Harry Potter is going to become a satan worshipper, especially since the books make no mention of religion anyway. No where in any of the books is there any mention of God,jesus, the bible, the church, christianity, satan religion, or any of those things. Of course i could write a story about a little girl going to the store and buying candy and some religious nutjobs would make into something evil and satanic.

  • There is a bible quote in DH...but I agree.

  • Comment removed

  • This woman is so ignorant.

  • You say she's ignorant? About what? To the contrary, she makes an intelligent case that the Harry Potter series is doing our society a great service by seriously discussing matters of good and evil. Furthermore, she showed similarities between Rowling and Augustine in how they conceptualize good and evil in their work, indicating that even ideas as old as Augustine can have such widespread appeal today. Ignorant? She seems to know her stuff.

  • There is no such thing as good nor evil, only difference of opinion. Get off your high horse, you are not that important. The universe has no need for you.

  • No one is claiming to be "that important." This is a scholarly lecture on ideas and concepts.

Did you listen to Elshtain's claims about horrific phenomena, such as the Holocaust, and how people who experience them tend to have no other way to adequately express such horrific phenomena perpetrated by other human beings, except to call it "evil," not "maladjustment" and the like? You do not seem to be engaging Elshtain's claims, but merely asserting the contrary--just about anyone can do that.

  • Harry Potter is a phenomenally written work of literature, its twists in plot being the most meticulously written I have ever read!

It's fiction, not a subliminal message for children to worship the devil. Get over it, J K is brilliant!

Go speaker in this video :o

  • @ayitspnayo nice job

  • @ayitspnayo amen

  • @ayitspnayo You really need to read more. Try Dickens or Shakespeare ffs.

  • @ayitspnayo @TheOpenMInded12460 Harry Potter is fictional get rid of the scam con artist, and followers go to rehab and / or your local psychologist please if you believe this stuff!

  • All I can say is...the book is Fiction. Nothing more or less.

  • Evidently, some commentators did not even listen to what Professor Elshtain said. One of her main points is the cultural importance of talking about the concepts good and evil, something that fewer and fewer people publicly discuss, as she points out. She views the Harry Potter series as reengaging a public discourse on good and evil, something that she believes is NEEDED. She never said that the character Harry Potter or the series of books was evil. Listen to what she actually says!

  • Bloodsport1:

You are missing the point. My comment had nothing to do with the goodness or badness of practicing magic, and neither did anything Professor Elshtain said. If you think practicing magic is a bad thing, that is your opinion, but that is not the topic at hand in the video or in my comment. My point was that many commentators immediately jumped to the conclusion that Elshtain denounced Harry Potter as evil, which she clearly did not.

  • I gotcha point

  • one big flaw: NOBODY IS SAYING HARRY POTTER IS REAL!!!!

  • this is stupid, honestly. harry potter is just a freakin story about good v. evil. obviously they don't get it. all they worry about is the evil stuff....c'mon, if harry potter, lord of the rings and star wars didn't have evil in it then what kind of story would it be? THINK. there is opposition in all things. geez...you people give me headaches.

  • You forgot HellBoy, man thats got a sadistic title too.

Them people givin me headaches too.

  • Oh I like this speaker

  • Oops, ignore my last paragraph there.

It seems the lady is speaking FOR the Harry Potter series. I took it the wrong way! oopsie...well that last bit was to the people who hate potter then!! lol

and I was kidding about "aiding the devil"

    sarcasm...

  • yeah, no joke. these people "think" they're right.

i've read/ watched harry potter and i'm not dead or surrounded by demons.

  • Were you calling the speaker an idiot? She was taking up for the series. Talking about it in an educated, positive manner.

  • @MysteryChair i think he meant to say good speaker in this video

  • hahahah that mreloo is an idiot

  • People who say Harry Potter is evil make me laugh. They make me wonder whether they have ever had fun, or even realise that the Harry Potter books are a work of FICTION and that there was evil in the world before Harry Potter. Just because there's magic in it doesn't mean it's evil. There are millions of books out there with magic in them. Like Sleeping Beuaty. Is Sleeping Beauty evil? **laughs**

  • Excellent reply, moron! Spoken like a true high school equivalency hopeful.

Keep up your loser ways. I supposed that the world needs people who will take fast-food orders and clean the bathroom at a gas station, so imbeciles like you do serve some menial purpose.

  • sounds like someone needs a hug, mabey I was testing your reaction tolerance well you failed this time but no bigge. you need to work on

not getting so angery when people dont buy

what your peddeling even when they make stupid comments

  • It's clear that logic and reason completely elude you, my friend. I did not ask anyone to "buy what (I'm) peddling." I simply questioned what differentiates the Christian Bible from the Harry Potter novels. Your self-acknowledged stupid reply of "don't be gay" triggered my reply to you. Had you replied that you disagree with the premise of my question because of x, y, and z, then I would have replied differently. Instead, you decided to take the low road, so I responded accordingly.

  • kind of like how you took the high with your reply..eh (turn the other cheek?)

mabey your reply is a mirror to whats really in your heart..

dont worry your in good company "the heart of man is despreatly wicked who can no it"

  • The difference, my grammatically and logically-challenged little unick, is that I originally posed a legitimate question, whereas you responded with, in your own words, " a stupid comment." Had your stupid comment been innocent, then I would have taken, as you put it, "the high road" when I replied. However, your stupid comment was made for no other reason than for the sake of showcasing your overwhelming stock of stupidity. You want a free pass for being an idiot! Now, who needs a hug?

  • I'm glad you think so highly

of your self, just what this world needs another peter pan pussy. like I said before your comment was stupid and I repied with a stupid comment. no evidence mr.smart guy

either your very stupid or you don't know how to read.

theres plenty of evidence for the truth of the bible, and pin heads like you who think the earth, humans created themselves dont realize how stupid the crap they peddle is.

but I just informed you so take Like a man.

    quit winning.

  • thats whining, which is what babies do, so stop it.

  • The level of stupidity to which you rise is truly amazing, and amusing. But it doesn't surprise me since it comes from an imbecile who believes that a serpent can speak.

Perhaps if you spent more time reading something more substantial, like an English grammar textbook, instead of warped, mind numbing religious pontification, then you wouldn't sound like such an intellectual pauper.

  • Do I have to break everytimg down for you? But considering the type of person I know you are at "this time", based on your dumb ass comments.(atheist punk, know it all)

    its word count above Grammer!!!!!!!

Fear not oh wounderous english teacher, there is hope for you and others like you.

God still loves you and will "change" your heart and forgive your sins.

But you have to believe he is.

(the creation declares his handy work)

and come to him (Jesus) with the heart of a child. Amen.

  • As entertaining as this has been, I'm afraid that this will have to be my final response. It's clear that all of the logic and reason couldn't begin to penetrate the intellect of a mental midget such as yourself. However, I take comfort in knowing that warped and outdated views like yours are on a rapid decline.

Good grammar is something that is required for my work as a corporate attorney. I suppose it's not as important to someone like you, who most likely wears a nametag at his job.

  • my secretary takes care of my letters..

keep in mind, young man that I would win this pissing contest.

  • they get 59 minutes??!!!!! not fair.

  • Goodness, this is more /for/ Harry Potter, than against it. Thanks.

  • she seems like an intelligent woman. except.... obviously not since harry is good. actually great

  • LONG LIVE HARRY POTTER!

  • This was an interesting analysis of the Harry Potter books. Elshtain was correct that the books contained many similarities to Augustinian conceptions of evil, and these conceptions still attract the attention of so many readers today. As archaic as "sin" and "evil" may sound, they may do us better in the long run than "maladjustment" and the like.

  • eh. people will be people.

  • If there is a god so powerful, worthy worshipping, and controlling everything; why wouldn't he himself handle the case, not letting his people to argue and fight?

Because he does not think Harry Potter is evil. Their god says HP is ok for human. If their god says it is ok, why would his people argue and fight about it.

  • Theres no black or white. Only shades of grey.

No good without evil and vice versa.

  • I really enjoyed her lecture, and would like to see more vids of her. I looked her up (Jean Bethke Elshtain) She is a political philosopher & Laura Spelman Rockefeller Professor of Social and Political Ethics at the University of Chicago. Nice to see something like this on youtube. Thanks for posting this!

  • all hail google

  • Parry Hotter is a good warlock. Without evilish side within, he wouldn't be so deeply good.

  • @designlucas well that might not be entirely true. although the books were writen for children, many different types of books often have a much deeper messaage and interpertation (sorry bout my spelling) depending on whose reading them

  • Evil has no depth. YES.

  • These sessions are great. I had no clue google even had their own account here until today.

  • Quality broadcasts...

    Look at the views meter.

  • These tech talks seem to resemble the convocations I had at my university.
