@mef83, Many thanks for the Swedish lyrics! I organize this celebration in my neighborhood in Trenton, NJ and can now add this song to our repertoire!
@abbylix Staffan was a stable-boy We are eternally grateful. He watered his five steeds, All under the wonderous shining star Not a glimmer of daylight could be seen yet, The stars in the Heavens, they twinkled. The best steed was dappled-grey, We are eternally grateful. Upon him Staffan rode, All under the wonderous shining star Not a glimmer of daylight could be seen yet, The stars in the Heavens, they twinkled.
Sorry. I think I was misunderstood. I said "strange" referring to the fact I understand you and our friend "bunnykins", who seem to have opposite opinions.
Wonderful. Congratulations to those who work with these youngsters. I understand both "mef83" and "bunnykins110P" too, although it may seem strange. Be it only an external move for tradition, at least it's a couple of hours these boys and girls are away from the "nihilist" culture of their generation worldwide habits. The little I knew about the Swedes made me understand they are a great people. Their deep sense of feeling is outstanding, and this is a true source of religiosity. Belíssimo.
Why is it strange? These days are very dark in Sweden. The sun is not up for a long time, so we really need light. Lucia is a festival to celebrate to bring light to the dark times, sort of. It has nothing to do with religion.
@mef83 I disagree. It has everything to do with religion. Lucy was a martyr, an she is now a saint. The celebration of her sacrifice (burned at the stake = candles, cut open = red band) is christian. There are also elements of pagan religion.

XDDDDD right with KathytaStk !!
You sweds are all paganos and you're protestant "burritos" who don't believe in the Saints : who give you the permission to celebrate Santa Lucia ??? !!
First, theese festivities are older than Protestantism. Second, the Swedish Santa Lucia celebrations is about traditions and a celebration of light, not religion. Cheers.
berig1 I know every single thing of those absolutely right & true you've posted .
The swedish celebrate Santa Lucia day not as a religious fest, but as an ancient celebration set under the old Julian calendar ( before 1st half of XVIIII cent ) that was the longest night of the year , otherwise said winter solstice .
What amazes me is that probably some swedish mates on here have a strange sense of humour and didn't get my comment meant as ironic
No problem, man :) Actually, the song the school choir above is singing, "Staffan Stalledräng", is originally loosely based on the story of Saint Stephen (Stefano protomartire). Still, today religion plays no part of the Lucia celebrations in Sweden. Cheers again.
Who are you to speal for all of Sweden? Must think pretty highly of yourself pal. For me and my family, for all the people I went to school with it is absolutely about God and faith. You should not try to represent a whole country, it isn't right at all. Many people in Sweden are deeply religious wether you like it or not.
Seriously, Sweden is one of the most secularized and non religious countries in the world. Lucia is just a fine tradition that brings light to the dark times.
That is not true at all, for instance the red belt is symbolic of the blood that was shed as Lucia was killed. The crown of lights on her head being symbolic of sainthood. All this I was taught in school growing up in Sweden (religious class). Maybe you were ill that day?
@berig1 Yes it is older then our lutheran protestantism but before that we were catholics and this celebration is a combination of old pagan traditions and italian catholic christian ones. In 1593 other religions then the Augburgs lutheran became illegal in Sweden but before that we were officialy catholic and this traditions has it roots in the 15th and 16th sweden when we got many influences from italy (catholic headquarters)
que pais mas pagano, ni saben por que celebran lucia!!! deberian averiguar muy bien quien es lucia, como un pais protestante que "no cree en santos" puede celebrar una santa!! Hay que ser muy burro y pagano!!
It's beautiful. So intimate and profound. So lovely and so sweet.

Now a fire at every hearth,
We are eternally grateful.
Yule porridge and yule pig,
All under the wonderous shining star
Not a glimmer of daylight could be seen yet,
The stars in the Heavens, they twinkled.

You come from USA and went to a christian school in sweden, and youre trying to represent what we feel of Lucia?
Seriously, all kids in a general swedish school would be laughing at you.

Who cares. Lucia is all about tradition and not religion for 99% of the Swedes. It's the same with Easter and Yule.

Vad en offensiv sak att säga! Kanske bör du få ut av Stockholm ut på landsbygden för ett tag. Det kan hjälpa din syn på Sverige.
