  • I strongly recommend her Puritani with Nicolai Gedda from 1963 in Philadelphia. Could be her best Elvira ever!

  • Incomparable!

  • I said CONSISTENTLY...thru many decades! No disrepect to darling maria...

  • Forget the sound thru the little mike, glorious as it is...Best judgement of the impact, the energy in the theatre....everyone claps well before she's even done!COuldn't control themselves...Who has ever done that consistently???No one "freaked out" an audience,in a good way, like dear Joan...

  • @lastupendaboy

oh darling. no disrespect to Dame Sutherland, but.....Callas in 1951 Mexico City Aida...yes. did make the audience not able to control themselves......on a whole new level. :]

  • I hope the people who "dislike" this are leading miserable lives.

  • Will a video of this performance ever become available?

  • thanks God had seen this wonderfull singer at colon theater....la stupenda....for ever

  • Bel Cunto is right.....(by the way your "Tacea la notte" was superb! Better even than caballe and Sutherland....the high D flat was....well, I don't know how to describe my.....well....it was High! and my ears are still ringing!) but anyway, i agree, she looks marvelous, but the fangs! Yvonne de Carlo EAT YOUR HEART OUT! lol Anyhow, Joan was 50 here, and I think that she gets an A plus:

    why?

    1. fast stuff is ACCURATE

    2. ditto

    3. Fast passages are ACCURATE!

    Young singers suck.

  • This is really cool...you can hear a totally different kind of singing from what's going on today, by and large. I'm amazed by the accuracy and the command that she has of this piece. Technically she is without reproach here. Wow...thanks so much for posting!

  • People keep bringing up Netrebko here and I take a bit of offense. I will be the first to say that Dame Joan gives the authoritative peformancr here and in the 70's studio recording. She is better but I love Anna Netrebko as well. Her first Elvira was at around 34 and Dame J is in her 40's and highly seasoned. Okay even when Sutherland wad 34 her command heft were better. But I am a fan of the current as well and Anna has my heart.

  • @chocolatesouljah Netrebko needs better technique (and the taste to ditch more of the high notes) before her performance becomes comparable.

This is astonishing: one month before her 50th birthday and Sutherland's still singing the most difficult music as though it's as easy as an art song. Amazing.

  • BRAVA!!

  • verdaderamente, la estupenda¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • A very good rendition, but many sopranos have been more charming in this cabaletta before and since J S.

  • Bonynge is a great "menapolenta" here. I hope it was not Bonynge.

  • i simply adore polenta!

  • Yes, those....WHORES are VERY "charming"...with their TERRIBLE coloratura roulades and inaccuracies too numerous to list here...why should any Singer that is at this Highest level (any Soprano we "chat" about here) why should they be "allowed" more than two or three inaccuracies per Opera without being labled what they actually ARE? well, my way of classifying them is like this...(prepare yourself) is:

    1`."Shitty"

    2."Sloppy"

    3."Shitty"

Forgive me my Friend, but "Charming" ???

  • i love joan... i've dedicated all my amateur sining vids to her... but she looks scary as hell in that second pic

  • Yeah, Joan just looks a little like something out of "Twilight." Joan is very much like Judy Garland in one way: they NEEDED good hair, costume, and makeup people. They didn't look good in everything, like say, Callas, but when they were made up properly, they both looked gorgeous!

  • I agree too!

  • You just don't hear singing like that anymore. Netrebko as Elvira... I don't think so. La Stupenda is the best!

  • I couldn't agree more with you, the Netrebko's of today should listen to this. This is how you should sing Bel-canto!

  • The great singers of the past like Sutherland set the bar so astronomically high that it will be a long time before anyone reaches it.
