hey im starting to think about options and qualifications i ned can i maybe get a reply telling me what qualifications i need for game designer , Thanks, Lewis
Just so you guys know to be a Game Designer you usually have to be an extremely skilled programmer and a very respected employee who's known to be good at every aspect of game development. It involves a lot of math, planning, and even programming. You can't 'ideaguy' your way into any company, and I wouldn't bet on being an artist, since pretty much anyone can do art. If you want to get started, learn Python or something. Otherwise go apply at McDonalds.
Hey ive recently decided i want to be a game designer after thinking all my life i wanted to be an animator. Ive honed my skills in animation and have goten pretty good. But Have recently found a big interest in designing games. Ive got talent in art and animation is it possible for me to become a successful game designer?
could you answer this.....im doing multimedia applications developement in college at the moment. i would love to get involved in game design....do you learn to use the programs that yee would use to create games in college or is it like on the job training
I got the tech, the ideas, the talent/creativity, but I don't know when to start... I know a little programming,(laugh, html). I already created one model, but I still can't get it going. Sometimes it makes me feel like someone is saying to me "it's too much", but I still want to do it.
@OmegaF77 Try focusing on one like, environment art, character art, animation, concept art, programming, game design or level design (there are a few others). Which one do you like best? Maybe thats the one for you and this gives you the option to focus and become very good at the particular specialisation. Being great at a particular area is much more valuable to an employer than being what many people call a "3D Generalist".
i think that it cost like 1-2 mil to create a game so if you get about 20 - 30 of you and your freinds that you meet at colledge/university and after that you must like all vote on a idea and then you put it all in to use and make games then more people know you and if you get more then 20-30 like 40-60 you can worck on more then one game or type like one football/socer or what ever and a first person shooter
@tripleG226 --- Theres no "best way" to become a game designer; it all depends on what kinds of things you like to do, and can do well. The industry is always changing, but there is always room for talented, passionate people who want to entertain others.
Take look at some of the other Game Related Videos on the Game Refuge Channel, or visit the gamerefuge web site for more insights.
@tripleG226 also, a ton of community colleges offer courses on game development, i have a 2 year degree in it, and im now getting a degree in animation, because i want to make animations.
@khmman95 --- Anyone who works on a game is a Developer, but a game's Designer is usually the person responsible for leading the team; ...the one who brings it all together and keeps everyone on track and focused on the same creative vision. He's like the Director on a Movie set.
@GameRefuge Erm.. Isn't that the project manager? I know that often the project manager is also the lead designer, but that's not always the case.. I always figured the game designers are the ones making important decisions on things like gameplay mechanics, content, features, themes, story, level design, etc.
I'm still not out of high school yet, but I want to start early and get ready for everything. I'm aiming to be a director for games, it's just that I don't know how that works. Do I have to be promoted up to director, or am I able to just jump into being a director when hired? I know the basics of what the Director does, too, but I don't know all of the things. Can the Director be involved in the actual making of the game? Or does he/she just guide and look over everything?
@ochahane i need some help, i wanna become a game designer and im 16 right now. i have idea what i have to do to get to that. can some1 plz help me out here
Im interested in this if any company wants to hire me let me know. i have an explosive imagination that's just leaking with new video game ideas and more. im going to take a class in college in computer technology i already sighed up all i got to do is take the placement test.
@Rozlelous1165 Lol, you're gonna need a little more than that. You can tell this video is old, maybe around the late 90's to early 2000's.
Back when games were starting out, developers just hired anything they could get pretty much. You're gonna have to take an actual story making class, or some art classes. It's best you acquire more then 1 skill to land a job now.
@Floreum yeah i know unfortunately i can't get the degree i want in programing because i don't have the right math requirements. I have a question are you a Game Developer if so do i really need Calculus?, because its killing me!! XD. every time i try to do something interesting i either don't have it in my area or i have to do a lot of useless crap in order to do something that is worth working for..the only good job in my area is the shipyard and i don't want to do that. =[ bummer.
@Rozlelous1165 If you want to get into programming, yes you do. If you want to get into character design, concept art, or story boarding, of course not! You can't put numbers on creativity! Also no, I'm not a game designer, I've just done a lot of research into the trade.
@Floreum ill do character design or concept art or the story boarding too because i have plenty of stories i wrote from scratch and i came up with my own characters and stuff like that. Thanks for your help in this field =]

Why you dont need to study something to be the profession you want to be?i have reed that you dont need to study game designer to be a game designer, how is that?aren't you supposed to study that in order them to train you and be a game designer?how can you be it,if didnt study that?its like film production, allot of famous film directors didn't went to study film in college, they were engineers, etc. So can somebody tell me why?Cause im confused and now i dont know if is better to study that or not.
@johnphoenix17 Well, thanks to the internet, you can learn a lot on making games, but your chances on getting a job with big companies are slim. If you get into a school, you can get a degree in game design and even some schools have partner ships with companies and get you into the big ones before you graduate. The people you keep hearing that land a great job without any education are all lucky. You can't rely on just that. It's way better to study,
@XxBLUE69xX ya, you get someone alse to do the art while you work on the game play and stuff, but i dont think you work with a team to design a game when you are schooling. but theyll teach you to draw.
We all wanna be one but its a hard job. The ammount of work in it and you wont have time to play the games. I rather be a critic, you get payed to play games and rate them and write a few things about them and kids just come running for that game.
=/ Excuses. NEVER let anything hard get in your way. If you want to do something then do it, dont let the pitty word hard stop you. As you do it, it gets easier and easier.
@Supernatura4Life lol man i turned more towards my art side because there's no game design around where i live. im president of my school's art club now.
im becoming a game designer... any1 knw a good university that offer this course, somewhere around los angeles? im thinking of going to ucla... the gaming industry is nearly as big as the movie industry, so thats y i wanna go into it.
@westoaux that isn't a good reason to get into the industry, you don't want to get into it for fame, or even money (trust me, it isn't as much profit as you think) you should want to get into it for fun, to bring fun to others, and for the challenge of creating a good, original game. But to answer your question, I'd recommend DigiPen, they are one of the best Game Dev Schools in the country.
not at all! i dont wanna do it for fame (is there even any famous game designers?). I wanna do it because i enjoy video games and the pay's not too bad. What i meant buy the "game industry is nearly as big as the movie industry" is that the gaming industry is expanding and in need of staff
There is a new "ADVICE for Game Designers" clip on the Game Refuge Channel that gives some advice from several more designers about getting into the industry.
It's some Java thing where i think you learn to write codes and all that. As much as i want to become a Game Designer, i have limits to how much i can do, and C++ is above my limit XD
I think it's like learning a new language... "Google C++"
C++ is not some Java thing, it's the basis of any program, it is the foundation of programming, Java isn't even close, and has nothing to do with C++ in total
C++ is not some Java thing. C++ is a multipurpose programming language (can be used for lots of different types of program). It's really powerful, but difficult to get to grasps with.
That is almost always the trade-off you make when choosing languages. ;)
Yes, because to get anything to work you need to understand some 20 things. ;) And when you don't have it right, you don't know which part of the 20 stages you got wrong, if you know what I mean.
But if you're diligent adn reads up, it gets easier and easier. worth the time, i think. could stat on a simpler language.
Even thou I did not design the engine but I am useing rpg maker but I am also learning scripts too I am learning how to do 32-bit as well I came up with my own story but I hope to recrate it as a 3d game in the future to bad im only 14
If im correct on most project there are multiple game designers?
I'm in my last year of highschool and I am very interested in designing video games, such and doing story, character, weapons, controls, ideas what ever i can do.
(some have very rigid job descriptions), but most dev groups will often have multiple people acting as "designer"... you may be lead designer on on one project, but simply a contributor on another.
But remember, "designer" is still a secondary discipline, you need to have a good primary skill to get your foot in the door.... ...(programmer, artist, technician, writer, whatever)
i was just about in the same kinda thing ur in. in the 12 grade i was thinking about welding, being a cop, military, or sumthing with computers nd just playing games it just hit me lol its really additcting iam in college now doing hands on traning and making a boxing ring in 3D using MAYA but yea man theres so many jobs in game design as for art there 3D modeling which iam doing now animation, it goes on ad on lol
@gunsnroses123456789 Well wise thing to do would be to go to college and get your degree in game design. Or you can be a tester for a few years and advance to a game designer choice is yours.
im 13 and im a young designer, i recreating duke nukem and doom But i can only do 2D im from england ad im wanting to be a programmer game designer wen im older, any tyipe or ideas on how to help.
There is a HUGE difference between a Game developer and a Game Designer. Everyone who works on the game is a developer, but the DESIGNER is the one who leads the team and directs the project. The Designer can be a programmer, an artist, a producer ... and often a game will have several designers working as a team.
The Documentary that this clip is from is a Great source of information. Visit gamerefuge on the web for more info....
Hi yes!. very helpful video! and i just have a few questions to ask. i was wondering is there a good and decent college to attend for " game desigh "?
I'm sure that there are some, but since I got into the industry before any degrees of this sort were around, I can't really say first hand.
Based on info from guys that I've hired over the years, development Tool Usage, NOT Game Design, seems to be the emphasis at most schools, despite what they may advertise.
...so beware.
Game Design is a secondary discipline, anyway... Might be better to get a useful programming, art or business degree and apply it to the Game Design industry.
sweet! bc i have a really good background in drawing and music so i think i would do ok in that part....the thing thats going to get me might be the programing part but im used and familiar with the Photoshop CS3. im just not sure where to turn to first thats all.. where u do work and etc? and how long have u been work? can i get the 411 on howd u get there where u are now and when? thanks! :D sorry im askin so much stuff just that im a senoir and stuff now and have to make a decision
Remember, you don't have to do it all... (art, music, programming), just do whatever you do WELL. ... Its not where you get your degree, its what you do with what you've got. ... Check out affordable online indy game development engines like GarageGames or 3DGameStudio, they have great community web sites. ... I've been doing this for 27 years. More info online at the gamerefuge website. ...the SO YOU WANNA BE A GAME DESIGNER DVD might be useful to you as well.
@GameRefuge i need some help, i wanna become a game designer and im 16 right now. i have idea what i have to do to get to that. can some1 plz help me out here
Man I want to be a video game designer for Microsoft or Bungie soo bad. Cant wait in 5 years, thats when I finish high school and go to college. One question, Is a video game designer one job or like is it split into sections. So are there different types of game designer
yea bro there are so many types as for 3D moldoling, writing, animation, and so much more iam more on the 3D Design which is amazing it depends on what you want to do if you're good at art then try 3D modoling if your more on the story side become a writer and get involved with the plot of the game you know lie story wise
you guys say yeah ill be a games designer, easier said then done you cant just waltz into a job willy nilly cause you have "ideas" get to college or uni theres where you'll realise its a though though industry and one of the most difficult ones to get into. get programmes like 3d max or fps creator and get cracking on some projects. im not saying it cant be done im just saying you need serious skills!! check out my page i give info on where to get started and so on
I wanna be a game designer so bad to becouse when i was 6 or 7 i was makeing games but i like to beable to make 3d games like nintendo and other games o ya the guy who made mario and donkey kong is in the video i seen him
dude working for nintendo would be really hard its a 99.9% chance ur not going to be working with them because they are a japanise business such as sony and other game campanys that made games like kingdom hearts i kno dude i wanted to work for sony at one point but theres so much game companys out there keep your head up
ok dude iam just saying because ur american and the japanise dont really like to hire forign designers they just do they own thing but yea man more power to you
I am also thinking of having my own company, and i have already found out a name for it. I have got some ideas for 3 games. A FPS, a RPG and then i am mostly thinking of a Beat 'em up game, and i got many ideas for it. Only 3 years and then i will try everyting to become a game designer.
Skill has nothing to do with where your name gets placed; it goes by section (sound team, animation team, etc.) and maybe alphabetically. Ideas are a dime a dozen. It's about making the idea work. I have artistic, writing (creative and grammatical) and communication skills which gives me an edge. And there's no need to be so competitive about who's the "best." Besides, if you're going to be narcissistic then it shows you may not communicate well and need to improve on textual communcation. ;p
Nobody remembers credits all the way through, but a lot of people read them to respect the people who worked their asses off to please others. I've known people who stay after a movie is over to watch the credits. It's out of respect and gratitude. Besides, if your name is in the credits and someone famous liked your work, then you could end up being summoned by them. Thus, credits do indeed hold an amount of importance, and it's an honor to be in them, even amongst the sea of names.
This is the blatant truth of being a video game programmer isn't it? Better than the blond kid and the idiot next to him playing around with a PS1 controller hahaha..
Which one? Midway?(George, Eugene) Atari? (Darryl) or Game Refuge? (Brian) ;)
Founded by former Midway designer Brian Colin, Game Refuge has been making videogames since 1992. Some of their better known titles include RAMPAGE WORLD TOUR (Arcade Game)GENERAL CHAOS (Sega Genesis) STAR TREK VOYAGER (Arcade Game) ARCTIC STUD POKER RUN (PC Game) PUCK SHOT (Touchscreen Countertop Game) TENNIS ACE (Touchscreen Countertop Game)MONOPOLY GRAND HOTEL (Video Slot) THE MUNSTERS (Video Slot)
Giant CRT screen, oh god.

You can go in through any visual media, like TV or films, or even novels.
Just write something cool.
Then try and sell it.
Even a game's story idea, you never know, they might hire you.

It means that you should use freeware software, like if you want to learn C++, use dev-c++

im becoming a game designer... any1 knw a good university that offer this course, somewhere around los angeles? im thinking of going to ucla... the gaming industry is nearly as big as the movie industry, so thats y i wanna go into it.
westoaux 2 years ago
@westoaux that isn't a good reason to get into the industry, you don't want to get into it for fame, or even money (trust me, it isn't as much profit as you think) you should want to get into it for fun, to bring fun to others, and for the challenge of creating a good, original game. But to answer your question, I'd recommend DigiPen, they are one of the best Game Dev Schools in the country.
pivotedsticks1 2 years ago
not at all! i dont wanna do it for fame (is there even any famous game designers?). I wanna do it because i enjoy video games and the pay's not too bad. What i meant buy the "game industry is nearly as big as the movie industry" is that the gaming industry is expanding and in need of staff

free beer and popcorn? where can i get a job that pays that?!

There is a new "ADVICE for Game Designers" clip on the Game Refuge Channel that gives some advice from several more designers about getting into the industry.

Lots and lots of time.
Unless you're stupid and pay for your software...
Then it might cost a lot.

If you really want to work with video games you need to go find a good C++ text book and make it your bible.
UdderRandomness 2 years ago 2
wats C++?
aznxCOOLxguy 2 years ago
It's some Java thing where i think you learn to write codes and all that. As much as i want to become a Game Designer, i have limits to how much i can do, and C++ is above my limit XD
I think it's like learning a new language... "Google C++"
Ultimatecannon 2 years ago
C++ is not some Java thing, it's the basis of any program, it is the foundation of programming, Java isn't even close, and has nothing to do with C++ in total

C++ is not some Java thing. C++ is a multipurpose programming language (can be used for lots of different types of program). It's really powerful, but difficult to get to grasps with.
That is almost always the trade-off you make when choosing languages. ;)
icilianfenner 2 years ago
is it hard to learn? cuz it seems like its impossible, thank you
aznxCOOLxguy 2 years ago
Yes, because to get anything to work you need to understand some 20 things. ;) And when you don't have it right, you don't know which part of the 20 stages you got wrong, if you know what I mean.
But if you're diligent adn reads up, it gets easier and easier. worth the time, i think. could stat on a simpler language.

Sorry for all the mispelling, talking to a friend at the same time ;)
I'm sure you can work out what i meant ;)

If im correct on most project there are multiple game designers?
I'm in my last year of highschool and I am very interested in designing video games, such and doing story, character, weapons, controls, ideas what ever i can do.
gunsnroses123456789 3 years ago 7
It depends on the company you're working for...

@gunsnroses123456789 Well wise thing to do would be to go to college and get your degree in game design. Or you can be a tester for a few years and advance to a game designer choice is yours.

Hi yes!. very helpful video! and i just have a few questions to ask. i was wondering is there a good and decent college to attend for " game desigh "?
rickiex 3 years ago
I'm sure that there are some, but since I got into the industry before any degrees of this sort were around, I can't really say first hand.
Based on info from guys that I've hired over the years, development Tool Usage, NOT Game Design, seems to be the emphasis at most schools, despite what they may advertise.
...so beware.
Game Design is a secondary discipline, anyway... Might be better to get a useful programming, art or business degree and apply it to the Game Design industry.
GameRefuge 3 years ago
sweet! bc i have a really good background in drawing and music so i think i would do ok in that part....the thing thats going to get me might be the programing part but im used and familiar with the Photoshop CS3. im just not sure where to turn to first thats all.. where u do work and etc? and how long have u been work? can i get the 411 on howd u get there where u are now and when? thanks! :D sorry im askin so much stuff just that im a senoir and stuff now and have to make a decision
rickiex 3 years ago 4
Remember, you don't have to do it all... (art, music, programming), just do whatever you do WELL. ... Its not where you get your degree, its what you do with what you've got. ... Check out affordable online indy game development engines like GarageGames or 3DGameStudio, they have great community web sites. ... I've been doing this for 27 years. More info online at the gamerefuge website. ...the SO YOU WANNA BE A GAME DESIGNER DVD might be useful to you as well.

Icemanrussian 3 years ago
yea bro there are so many types as for 3D moldoling, writing, animation, and so much more iam more on the 3D Design which is amazing it depends on what you want to do if you're good at art then try 3D modoling if your more on the story side become a writer and get involved with the plot of the game you know lie story wise
bklyn390 3 years ago
you guys say yeah ill be a games designer, easier said then done you cant just waltz into a job willy nilly cause you have "ideas" get to college or uni theres where you'll realise its a though though industry and one of the most difficult ones to get into. get programmes like 3d max or fps creator and get cracking on some projects. im not saying it cant be done im just saying you need serious skills!! check out my page i give info on where to get started and so on

NintendoArielle 3 years ago 2
you mean under my name i wana be the best!!
danceallot 3 years ago
Skill has nothing to do with where your name gets placed; it goes by section (sound team, animation team, etc.) and maybe alphabetically. Ideas are a dime a dozen. It's about making the idea work. I have artistic, writing (creative and grammatical) and communication skills which gives me an edge. And there's no need to be so competitive about who's the "best." Besides, if you're going to be narcissistic then it shows you may not communicate well and need to improve on textual communcation. ;p
NintendoArielle 3 years ago 3
no one reads credits anyways
a2vg2a 3 years ago
Nobody remembers credits all the way through, but a lot of people read them to respect the people who worked their asses off to please others. I've known people who stay after a movie is over to watch the credits. It's out of respect and gratitude. Besides, if your name is in the credits and someone famous liked your work, then you could end up being summoned by them. Thus, credits do indeed hold an amount of importance, and it's an honor to be in them, even amongst the sea of names.
