What the hell, I just found out that it was only number one hit here in holland, in Amerika it didn't get higher as 56 and the UK 29 and Ireland 19... I thought this would have been a hit in more countries...
i love this song so much! my grandfather was a nzi in ww2 as a hitler youth at the end of the war (he was 16) after being captured by the americans in berlin in 1945 he was kept as fresh meat incase of another conflict arose by then he was 18 then when vietnam happened he was one of the first to go in (voluntarily) when he was 40 he had to be taken out because he was too old and my father always told me he thanked the US for letting him live and im so proud to be an american :)
this song is addictive i love it cant stop listening 2it shouda used it 4 our boys still out ther fightin 4 our freedom god bless all who were our uniform we love u boys, buyt come home xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
LISTEN UP! KEEP YOUR WEAPONS AIMED DOWN, KEEP YOUR HEADS DOWN SO THE ROTOR'S DON'T CUT YOUR FOOL HEADS OFF! DO IT JUST LIKE YOU'VE BEEN TRAINED AND YOU'LL SURVIVE- YOU SCREW UP, YOU DIE! 20 SECONDS TO LZ SO HANG ON! Sorry, just having a flashback
My Dad came back and he said he should have been awarded the Purple Brain medal. Many soldiers came back physically but not mentally and this is one of the saddest results of war.
One person does not know what is war , or what impact it has on those who fought it or felt it in some way . War is not Red Alert 3 where Terror drones fight Sickles . And that person better pray that he , or she those not experience it .
I cried the first time I heard it, the song's beautiful and yas the subject is very heavy. The war was pointless, though. RIP for anyone who has served their country and has their life taken, not only the Americans, either the Vietnamese. I'm actually torn writing this cuz when writing about this kind of things, making me think of the photos from the Vietnamese war. The man who burnt himself alive (and just keeps sitting!), the consequences of agent orange, the many people who have died Respect!
The song really does show how bad it was over there and it makes me ashamed sometimes to live in America knowing that my fellow Americans spit and cursed the soldiers that came back. I do not wonder or ask why they had to die rather i ask why did they have to me mocked and spit on. I may never join the military but i will gladly deck anyone that bad mouths it. Every American soldier has my support an gratitude.
my uncle was torchered and killed in vietnam the only reason y they won was because of the hippies in american and china helped vietnam this song is the best song billy ever wrote 1965-1975 u served ur country and we support u and believe a future marine we r not finished with vietnam yet u will all be avenged

i love the first line or two in this song, "we met as soul mates, on paris osland, we left as inmates, from an asylum". i don't remember if my grandfather was in the korean war or if he was in 'nam.
wow! That song touched me somwhere deep inside. I dont know if it was the rythym, the lyrics or the piano playing maybe all of it, but that song has something to it that makes it speacil! it`s inspired me =) so thank you for that. <3
This is such a heavy song. I mean it is a beautiful song, but the subject is so heavy. Those guys who were there in Vietnam didn't even know who their enemies were! They called them Charlie! And so many died out there, but for what? It was just for nothing!
Great song - think you might have to edit the title for when people search though because it's just Billy Joel and the Royal isn't needed or will get mixed up with Billy Joe Royal.
FUCK YOU ADVERTS!

Top. One of Joel's best efforts. You'd think he'd been there. Mustve talked to a fee who were.

In a hauntingly, poetic and heartfelt song, Billy Joel, captured the emotional essence of the Viet Nam War.
