  • and Manu Katche may be my favorite drummer...next to Moon and Carter Beauford.

  • I love this CD...the only thing that bothers me about it is the continuity...

I burnt one and changed the order.

All I can say is...listen to Tracks 1, 7, 9 in that order...the most amazing lullabye.

  • Words cannot do justice to the magnificence of this song, so ill keep it simple:

    Pure Genius

  • I love Manu Katche's drumming on this album; especially this song, how it gradually builds and cullmanates. Brillant.

  • the best album of sting for me :)

  • @orestisyr I agree with you this was my favorite Sting album.

  • This is one of the 3 songs I want played at my funeral. The songs are, in order:

    1.) Forever Young by Alphaville

2.) The Seventh Stranger by Duran Duran

    3.) This song.

  • This is a best song writter in a universe

  • Perfect song. It captures so much with such simplicity. Masterpiece.

  • hey, i thought this was MY song ;)

  • Awesome and that is all you can say, this guy is a talent...

  • For the ship had turned into the wind

    Against the storm to brace

    And underneath the sailor's hat

    I saw my father's face

  • thank u 4 this. i was looking for it but i looked under soul cages & i couldnt find it cuz its titled The Wild, Wild Sea not the soul cages. this song takes me away like calgon(:kudos 2 u & sting

  • I have listened to this album on a regular basis for 22 years now. Genius!

  • A lot of this album had to do with Stings own father's passing. Sorrow is something we will all relate to at some point in our lives.

  • My father's funeral was a month ago today. I'm just getting the strength to listen to this album today - my first real embracing of the grief.

  • As far from a hit song you can be, but a song don’t have to be a hit to be good. I love this one. There is a deapth and soul to it, a dreamy atmosphere. It’s well composed, great arranged/harmonies/sound by a true genious musician. Sting is one of my absolute favorite artists.

  • @TheMusicenjoyer Totally agree with you, my soul and heart can't help crying when he reaches this emotional yet peaceful peak. I think this masterpiece album brought Sting beyond any other (before and after) because he opened up his soul to share his most deepest feelings, fears and hopes. His quest going up and down like a tide is so powerful as the lyrics are so poetic, moving and touching. Pure grace.

  • great song great album

  • Sting built these songs in a modernized and jazzed up style of sea shanties, they weren't meant to be verbose, and I don't think any of it was contrived or forced myself. Blue October puts me in mind of Sting. They too are very descriptive and emotive.

  • Great song, thanks for posting it!!!

  • In the spring of 1991, Sting, in my opinion, took his solo career to the next level with the release of "Soul Cages". Although it wasn't a commercial success, this album touched me like no other work he has recorded. This song was my personal favorite and I thank the owner of this video for giving fans an alternative to the radio play tracks we have become accustomed to.

  • @thisismusic38 ..I fully agree with you on this..

  • Absolutely one of the best contemporary albums ever recorded!

    A storyteller's storyteller!

I have enjoyed this album since its release, and I still enjoy it as much today, as when i first heard it played!

  • I just got this album in the mail today.

ghosts songs from a distant year,

  • Occasionally, an album comes out that speaks directly to your soul. The Soul Cages was that album for me. When I first got it, it totally blew me away. Even now, every time I listen to it, I am reminded of my late father. A truly great album....Does anyone know where I can get the tabs/ chords for The Wild Wild Sea??

  • @fladivr My father became terminally ill in 91 and died in August 92.......and like you...this song takes me back to him so completely.

  • Immortal lyrics, immortal melody= immortal song!

  • I agree this is his best work. I love this song.

  • the most amazing album from sting ever.. it drove me to tears the first time I heard it.. and now after 20 years nothing has changed.. god bless you man and the soul of your father you miss so much..peace

  • This song make it up to me that i cant see sea from my window.

  • One of the most beautiful of Sting's lyrics. Jungian?

  • There are reasons songs live past thier time. How they impact our lives means far more than the simple meter and melody. This song means more to me than I care to share on youtube. I doubt that I am the only one.

  • @Malzarin - you are not the only one

  • @Malzarin You're not the only one. I wish I could meet many people that appreciate this genre of music as much as I do.

  • @ochoriostube Thank you for your thoughts and appreciation )

  • @Malzarin you are definitely not alone my friend This is a great song and means a great deal to me as well. Sting is an exceptionally brilliant songwriter. The lyrics of this song in particular transcend so many levels. Keep in my by the way that he wrote this song [and the album ] as a tribute to his parents who had both passed away at the time he was working on this album. Yet the lyrics can have such a potent relevance in many situations, particular with regard to relationships with people

  • @leslie535 Thank you, this song evokes demons that I can not resolve in this life. This is a most beautiful song that is rooted in darkness. To be lost with a chance of redemption is a powerful thing, but some of us are lost on the wild sea.

  • @Malzarin well said my friend.

  • @Malzarin You arent the only one , this album has defiantly changed my life. And this song has always meant so much to me.

  • the song is perfect, except...

"for I woke in a bed of white linen

and the sky was the colour of clay"

I thought that was a bit forced...

  • @rozniy Modern lyrics are very casual, I like that Sting breaks from that a bit, even if he might cross into "forced" sometimes. He also breaks from standard time signatures ("Hung my Head," "Love is Stronger Than Justice") and has song forms that aren't usual. Good for him for pushing it a bit.

Regarding the lines you quoted: Sting read on the "Il Postino" poetry CD. I wonder if he did a little borrow from Neruda's poem Integrations which reads "the moon is the color of clay."

  • This song + Island of Souls are best songs ever written by Sting.

  • Genius forgotten song from a genius underrated album......

  • so true... his best album imho...

  • @SIRUS80 great poem. terrible song.

  • that is the correct passage

  • Second paragraph, instead of "If it should happen again...", "if it happens again.."

Third one, instead of "i walked into the sea strand.." there should say "I wadded into the sea strand"

And fourth one instead of " Black sea in a reddening sky", there should say, "black sail in a reddening sky"...

  • talking lyrics. the only source is lyrics by sting. a hard covered book by random house.

  • 333<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

  • a great great song from him

  • not "you've lost on the wild wild sea" but "you're lost..." i think
