  • I write this comment on December 6th, 2011, on the 90th anniversary of the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, in memoriam of all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country

  • love this

  • i am proud 2 say that i am related to Kathleen Largey R.I.P . My Granny R.I.P was her sister in law as Kathleen married my Great Uncle Eamonn R.I.P

  • PROUD OF EIRE

  • Beautiful, gives me goosebumps, my mum sings this song so wonderfully too, her favourite song. Such a perfect song to explain Irish history to someone with no idea in just a few minutes.

  • @parlourprincess I bought this 45 in enniscorthy about 25 years ago,the last time i went with my father,i still have it and love playing it,it says everything.

  • erin go bragh!!

  • this song makes me remember my mother singing it in the smoke filled social clubs in belfast in the 80's and no matter how drunk she never messed it up or failed to get applauded as she finned reciting the end

  • I am English & a Londoner but no matter, this is a great song & this version is a masterpiece [What a lovely voice]. There is a certain magic in the timbre of the Irish voice. So many great artists are & were from Ireland. Much appreciated by the whole world. I wish the country well in the future!!.

  • @Teddyb1939 So many people have tried to sing this song but nobody does it like this, the words of the intro/exit tell all.It makes my skin creep it is so true.

  • @lneranger4 Thanks for your comment, my feelings entirely, Pure magic. I just have a love of Irelands folk singers, Sean Cannon & Luke Kelly being in my opinion the finest, I do have some of their magic on my site. You must know their work, let me have your opinion please. I have played these great artists to other people & they don't seem to get the magic.

  • Beautiful ballad sang by a beautiful irish woman, isnt it a pity the traitors in Sinn Fein sold our great nationality to britain? Treacherous, power hungry wasters, is this really what 10 brave irish soldiers died for?

  • to the last poster dont have a notion wot the hell ya mean mo chara, believe me my friend certain sections of the irish people have well and truly sold their mother, inflammatory rhetoric,u obviously dont understand irish history, love ur lilly livered words but not over here buddy

  • BEAUTIFULLY SUNG!...Taught me everything about Irish song, this one..straight out of the box, when i first heard it on a street in France..sung with Hurdy-gurdy. But this has to be counted as the worst kind of inflammatory rhetoric, this addition to the song, by THE JOLLY GREEN GIANT, "I am Ireland, great is my shame, my own children have sold their mother".What Irish have done recently with peace, (also VERY brave),has done great honour to them and has elevated all Christians.Thank You Eire!

  • this song encapsulates everything about irelands freedom struggle,it is such an emotional tune, kathleen truly had the voice of an angel who was a true patriot and woman of ireland,im so honoured and proud kathleen was my aunt, may she rest in piece, and may she still influence irelands struggle to this day,god bless ta ar la ag teacht

  • -We Remember...Kathleen Largey!

  • bondage me arse on lone !

  • this has to be my favourite irish song-beautiful :) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • if freedom isint worth risking your life for then what is?? live for nothing or die for something..

  • This was my Father's favourite song. It was played at his funeral. UP THE MURPH !!!

  • I love this song. I love "Only our Rivers run free."

I love Kathleen Largey singing them.

I love the fact that technology has advanced, and people can now see what is really going on...

  • at least they are at peace now thanks to the likes of Michel Collins and his ilk god bless and may they rest in peace

  • This has to be the most poignant celebrated groups of Irish music! All the more-so because of their late members. Give a big shout out for the flying column folks. Hope someone sees this and does a documentary celebrating their music. Slainte and God bless fellow Irish folks.

  • when did she died, god bless her

  • Yes. Phil Stuart was a teacher in Berlfast. The guitar playing was a guy called Gillespie. Great poem, great song, great singer. Great group, the Flyin Column.

    Patsy

  • Beautiful song. Brings me to tears every time.God Bless the Flying Column. Forever.

    Damian

  • reminds me so much of when i was a child ,and played my mas records on her old record player, and shes still alive ,a great woman that bore 12 children and i am the youngest ,and now in her 89Th year ,......ah it's enough to break your heart

  • is this Phil Stuart ex teacher from belfast

  • @shivvy123

    It is surely.

  • Really FANTASTIC!!!

  • no one can sing this like kathleen largey

  • Glorious rendition of a poignant song which, sadly, still rings true today. Surely a divided Ireland is a geographical absurdity, and a united Ireland an historical inevitability? 26 + 6 = 1.

  • Kathleen Largey has a most beautiful voice and gives a fine rendition of this emotional song. One of our our Green Fields is still in bondage, but hopefully our enemy will be taught a serious lesson very soon by the Taliban regarding tresspassing where they are not wanted!!

  • When England was the whore of the world, Margret was her madame.

I'll be a good boy now. I'm trying SO HARD to behave for there is one thing that I long to live long enough to savour.

THAT'S WHEN THEY FINALY PUT HER IN THE GROUND. WE'LL STAND THERE LAUGHING AND TRAMP THE DIRT DOWN!

  • the four provinces of ireland

  • I loved Tommy Makem who wrote the song while on a drive from Dundalk to Newry. But this version is the most heart wrenching and touching that I've ever heard. It breaks my heart every time I hear it. I also grieve for all members of both communities who have died over the years.

  • Classic song

  • have not heard this in years, last time i asked in a bar for it to be played i was declined, but the band member playing that nite was one of the orginal Flying Column....he played it the next nite in west belfast for me......After growning up living the songs on the Falls its still great to hear...and so jealous of my dad as he tells me of storys of going to see Kathleen sing on a Sunday nite...he said she was a stunning singer and in this song she proves a point....love the Eire

  • This is so beautiful, I am so glad you got it played for you in the end.

    Happy Christmas.

  • Every time I listen to the flying Column it reminds me of my youth in the 70s, it's so very sad that such a beautiful passionate voice is now silent in the live sense. I am so glad this talented group can still be heard today. LONG LIVE THE FLYING COLUMN.

  • This song was part of my education: my mother sang this to me when I was a child, and we had the Flying Column's Four Green Fields on LP. My father was interned with Benny Dooher of the FC, and still speaks of him with great respect. I'll play this to my little daughter. Céad míle buiochas don Flying Column. I sing the Castle of Dromore to her when she's going to sleep - a beautiful lullaby.

  • @lamhdeargabu25

I still have the old Tape, Price of Justice.

  • Ooops .. I mean mandolin. :)

  • Great singing and a lovely song ... Some nice banjo playing to .. sounds great.

  • Heard this many years ago, and couldn't help feeling moved by it. I was singing it to my husband the othernight. She truly has a lovely voice.

  • I mean originally a Gaelic poem not song lol

  • Not quite, but if you listen till the end it is spoken in English. :-)

  • @BonnieBlueFlag1314 That's just for the English speaking Irish and followers throughout the world.

  • But the poem was originally a Gaelic song, designed for that language, im sure it isnt as good in English.

  • What a beautiful song, wish i could understand the Gaelic to appreciate it fully!

  • The English version is recited at the end of the song. The Poem is called Mise Eire.

  • one of the best ballads ever.

  • Hi, my name is Tony and I played guitar and sang in the Flying Column with Kathleen,Eamonn,(vocals), Benny,(bango), and Paul, (fiddle).Kathleen and Eamonn are sadly missed to this day but after all this time it is great to see that the group has not been forgotten. Adh mor.

  • Hi Tony thanks for the comment. I see you sang Castle of Dromore on the Four Green Fields album. Was there any others you done?

  • In reply to Ireland1. Hi, just to let you know that I sang another track on the Four Green Fields album. It was Johnstons Motorcar, but I mostly played guitar and left the real singing to Kathleen and Eamonn who were really brilliant. Adh mor.

  • Yeah I gathered that too... it's been so long since I heard Castle of Dromore, but I love your version of JMC even compared to other great versions i.e. Ronnie Drews. Would you mind if I stuck it on here?

  • Actually you sing quite a few tracks. I have the Finest Irish Rebels Ballads. I have posted Belfast Street Songs a long time ago too. As 4 real singing, you are brilliant!

  • thought it was just kathleen and eamonn she was good singer

  • Hi, you go ahead (with thanks) and stick on JMC. My son in Australia will be chuffed to hear his ould da singing it on You Tube Ireland1!!

  • Are you not doing the Belfast street songs too? Let me know what songs you recorded with Flyin Column and I'll stick them on once I hunt out the rebel album.

  • There ya go... Your son will be proud as punch :-) youtube. com/ watch ?v= H5dg4MlHU2A

  • Hi, just to let you know that I sang only the two tracks on the Four Green Fields album. All the albums after that had Kathleen singing on her own untill her unfortunate death, but at least we have these albums to remember her by. Adh mor.

  • Hi Tony.. right I didn't know that. I have one here called Fav Irish Rebel Ballads with songs like Come to the Bower Henry Joy and Banna Strand and a pile more sung by kate and eamonn.

  • Hi, just to let you know that those songs were on the album Folk Music Time in Ireland. The group was reformed with Kathleen, Eamonn, Benny, Paul and myself. We then went on to record the Four Green Fields album. Adh mor.

  • Phil Stuart doing the bit in Irish at the start.

  • Met Phil in Curleys the other day, told him to look up the interest on You Tube. Still waiting, come on Phil, where are you? Adh mor, Tony.

  • Don't you mean Sainsburys ;-) lol.

  • N0, us ould folk will always refer to it as Curleys. Old habits die hard!! :-) :-)
