This song is completely obviously a parody of commercialism targeted at religion. The fact that anyone could see this song as being both positive and about themselves only goes to show that this (hypothetical?) person has swallowed both their religion and this marketing hook, line, and sinker.
Authorship is apocryphal. It's been attributed to The Goldcoast Singers; Marrs; Cromarty & Rush; etc., etc... Flaming Lips do a nice cover of the Cool Hand Luke version, though. No complaints there.
who´s johnson? I´m talkin about daniel johnston. Anyway I just realized that this song is an old song by cool hand luke so I guess it´s not inspired by johnston.
anyone heard cecil mccartney version on 1968 album titled om fantastic

This is a great cover.
I still prefer Paul Newman's from Cool Hand Luke, but I really, really like this.

I love this song cos it transends. It can be an anthem for positive or negative. It takes no sides regardless of who sings it.

This is a decent cover, not as good as jack johnson, and neither can touch Newman's version in cool hand luke! Rest In Peace Paul.

I love the Flaming Lips! Learned this song just because they did it.

He means Daniel Johnston, not Jack Johnson

you must have it backwards since the flaming lips recorded it almost a decade before jack johnson's debut album.

Its from cool hand luke sung, not written by paul newman. jack johnson is known to cover this song live, probably explaining the confusion
