I think that's just your POV from nowadays. As you can tell from Slayer's comment in this video most famous bands at that time were Glam Rock bands which is about the equivalent of scene-emo post-"hardcore" stuff.

I think the good bands always have to be dug up from beneath a layer of shit pop bands that just follow the current trend.
