hahah i love how this idiot y34r is talkin like he or she can do this ... maybe you'll get noticed world wide recognition of mindless jabber about jazz on youtube comments cause you obviously are not getting the picture of what he's showing you. ... actually what if y34r is raul? lol
@y34r yeah i hope he succeeds, considering he's played on letterman and other major festivals i think he's already doing that. you just want to hate. you can't debate shit because you can't play this stuff. so i don't know why you are talkin shit. real musicians recognize, you're obviously just a hater that probably plays martini bars once a week with some shitty group.
Jazz is about doing and playing what comes to you with the facility of what you have. As long as it sounds good it's more than valid. Think about it. Raul is being musical with what he possesses.
@y34r Ever hear George Benson? He's one of the most emulated jazz guitarists in history and he very often sang his lines in unison while he was soloing. Not sure you should be criticizing cats when your understanding of the tradition isn't complete.
@intrepidpooch I didn't say that singing unison with your solo line is not Jazz or mainstream,
I was trying to say his attitude of him saying that ''its so easy to do ,i can do it this ,but i chose not it''
for example, some classical pianist got fast chops ,then he came to play jazz,he may have concept of it,and can play fast shit thing in improvisation, but that doesn't make it JAZZ
On contrary, someone who may not have the technique like raul, play less technique-oriented,but swing much more
That's funny that you mention Kenny Werner because Raul was in the audience when Kenny said if you can sing and play giant steps you can be in my band... ! It was the night before Raul's show at a festival in New Mexico. We made Raul do it at his show and tell the story!
Amazing musical mind plus a sharp IQ to match. probably only ahandful on the planet can do what he does with voice and their instrument on Giant steps. Wonder why he isn't raved about as much as those who clone and become superstars overnight on American idol with less then 1% of his talent.Mmmmm!

Its cool. but the problem is that it isn't true to jazz, this was rehearse, I want hear him improve in the moment. I admire and respect him as a musician.
He did a lot of improvs during the workshop, and we can't say for sure that he didn't do any of his own riffs and takes on this standard. I'm sure he learned the basic progressions of the song, but this version sounds different from my other versions of Giant Steps. All I'm saying is I can't safely and rigidly say that this was entirely rehearsed and "untrue to jazz".
The reason that it is untrue to jazz is simply because jazz is the music of the moment and everything that happens in that moment can't be redone cuz its improvised and freestyle. Giant Steps actually was an excercise that Coltrane created and practiced on a regular basis. If you ever listen to Coltrane's alternate takes of giant steps there are some similarities between the solo but I doubt if he could've done the same exact solo over again.
The only thing that stays the same obvisiously is the Drawing board(Chord changes) With today's technology anyone can learn that solo. Don't get me wrong, Midon is a great musician, but he had practiced and dissected the song really well before he did this clinic.
You've missed the point of what he was saying. None of these solos were memorized note-for-note. They were all improvised in the moment. What was practiced was the ability to improvise accurately in various harmonic relationships with the guitar. The practice gave him the freedom to do it spontaneously. He described how you can learn to have the same freedom in a difficult tune like Giant Steps that you have in an easy blues. Midon can improvise like this in any chord progression at any tempo.
Raul is one of the few if not the only singer/guitarists who can sing and play giant steps at the same time - he can sing over in a different key (at the same time) and HE TOTALLY IMPROVISES AT WILL because of his skill level. so you are right he can improvise in any tempo and guess what he can sing/improvise in any key too - because he has put in over 10,000 hours which puts you in the genius category... He's also a really nice guy.
this is amazing, i find this song vry nice, sounds beautifull... its not about complication, is about sound... and Raul Midon realy does amazing music with this piece :)
When he sings in harmonics, this dude shows just how much music IQ he's walking around with...absolutely scary!!!!!

Great video! One thing though - Giant Steps has 3 key centers not 4 as is written in the description. B, G and Eb - there is no E.

@associate434 lol its so stupid logic ,' hey you can't do it then you can't criticize or say a thing about it '? you know that sounds stupid right?
All i said was ok ,yeah, he could do it,so what?
Doesn't mean it fit into style of that genres(in this case, jazz),
I hope Raul succeed in mainstream music though,I guess, since he would hardly succeed in jazz, and all he focus is how much he's getting paid

You're great musician ,Raul
jazz is a hard drill, you have to take to get thru it.but Jazz is not about singing in harmony of the improvised solo
That's doesn't look greator fit in context of jazz ,and also ,when you're trying to chorus your improvised solo
your solo's line aredropping from the one that you sing unison,
Jazz is not about showing that you could sing with what you play, yes you should be able to do that,
but its part of jazz ,not 'Real' purpose
Keith Jarrett ,for instead

@intrepidpooch I wasn't trying to be cool or guru or criticizing cat
but kind of attitude thaat raul had shown is kinda arrogant and ignorant,if you asked me
same thing applied to every kind of music
you can do it technically ,doesnt mean you grab the heart of what it is
,and yeah i know george benson did sing along, kurt rosenwinkel also, keith jarrett also,
Oscar peterson did it too,
I like his work,'state of mind' and all that but not this trying-to-show-off act he was pulling

"If you find something complicated, it's just because you're not used to it."
Absolutely. Kenny Werner says in his book, rather to look at things as easy or hard, look at them as familiar and unfamiliar. He's so right.
