I've just been reading Brian's biography, "Wouldn't it Be Nice". Basically Brian's speech was a really big deal to him and took a lot of guts to do despite all the problems he'd had up to that point. As you can see he's healthier and more sane than he'd been in years. Mike Love (being his usual jealous self) resented Brian's new found independence and had to try and steal the limelight. As for John Lennon throwing Michael off the stage...John was a peace maker. Would not have happened. However, Michael would not have said that if he were there. Mike can take pot shots at people if they are no where around. (real gutsy) neither Paul or John were there, Mick or Ms. Ross either. That's why he did it. Theres no bigger anti Mike flag waver than me. I truly believe he contributed to Brian's problems, Dennis' downfall, alot of grief for Carl, & the ruination of the greatest band of all time. But I love what he said here because I do think all those he named have been tremendously overrated, and at the Beach Boys expense. None of these bands could ever touch Brian's talent (or Dennis' & Carl's for that matter) this bands work, impact, or overall kindness & humilty as human beings (Mike aside).

@riv4life618 Whenever someone starts with the "nobody could touch them" speech, you know it's bull. Especially when you include Carl and Dennis in that. To imply that Beatles are "tremendously overrated" in comparison to the BBs is a joke. ARGUABLY Pet Sounds is the best pop record of all time, but such an idea doesn't make BB as a band in their own league.

I base my taste on my ears, not hype or media propaganda that's been shoved down American throats for nearly half a century by music execs just to make a buck. @pongqi Brian's quite shy, and from what I read, was very nervous about making this speech. It was written out, and he read from the sheet of paper.
Mike did have a point about the absence of both Paul McCartney and Diana Ross. They should have been there.

Control freak. Talented-front-man...but a control freak. Catch 22, those old surf/beach/girl/car songs would not have had an equal effect had Mr. Love not been there to lend his voice. To be certain. But to manipulate Brian Wilson, to intimidate and bully so he could go on making a grand living just sucks. Too bad Brian could not have had the courage to tell Love (and other users) to fuck themselves and THEY can write/produce/arrange the songs. Beach Boys were far stronger when Brian was in!

I've just been reading Brian's biography, "Wouldn't it Be Nice". Basically Brian's speech was a really big deal to him and took a lot of guts to do despite all the problems he'd had up to that point. As you can see he's healthier and more sane than he'd been in years. Mike Love (being his usual jealous self) resented Brian's new found independence and had to try and steal the limelight. What a dick! Get's my vote for worst most self-indulgent speech ever.
