Found it! As a kid I was facinated by Titanic after seeing this vid. Now live in Southampton and walk past the memorial to the engineers most days, go past the old White Star offices, South Western house and the dock where she sailed from on my way to work every day. Be good when the museum opens for the 100 years later this year as the current one is pretty small. Considering 700 approx people lost came from Southampton and local Hampshire area I'm glad theyre doing something for it.
This was the first Documentary I ever remember seeing on the Titanic when I was a kid. I to this day still LOVE watching this! The narration...the sound effects....the music. Takes me back!
the iceberg did sink the titanic, but the matterial it was made of was not strong enough and it was brittle from being in the cold water plus a fire broke out in the boiler room that didn't go out until April 14th. this all led up to the sinking.
I used to have this on VHS. Been looking for it on the internet forever... Old school National Geographic is much better than the watered down "NatGeo" stuff they have on nowadays.
@BigMattMoney i went on a cruise in 2000. it was fun. i know what you mean. the ocean is beautiful but scary. the Titanic movie was scary. it's time to make another one. in APRIL of 2012 the TITANIC tragedy will be 100 yrs. old.****
This is a great opening to a great documentary. I'm no stranger to understanding the sadness of the loss of life. But am the only one who feels a little sad for Titanic herself? I know it sounds strange but it's just so sad. She was built with such love and adoration but didn't even get to finish her first voyage.. kinda like she didn't even have a chance to live 'a ship's life' due to human error and over confidence.
@halfdude You are not alone. If you read contemporary reports, the people who built it felt the same way- as one described like putting all the effort into a child, sending it out into the world, only to see it die before it had a chance. The men who worked on the WTC described similar feelings.
People think it's crude to feel loss at physical objects, but they forget that there was a time when humans built big things with their hands and these things were proud personification of their work.
I remember watching this when I was in 3rd grade. I'm 27 now. I remember how I found the music they played when they were showing the underwater wreck to be haunting.
@aprilb8888 there was a panic as the TITANIC announced its accident. as we know there weren't enough lifeboats & still some room left on those lifeboats that were already on the water. such sadness & scary.
@d4seasons james cameron also deleted the scene where captain smith orders lifeboat six to come back, but the officer ignored the captains order. that scene should have been kept in the film.
@badturkali thanks for writing. it's always great to hear from TITANIC fans. that crucial scene should have been left in. it showed that the passengers cared. the crew member was disobeying orders but he was right about the suction & pressure that can kill everyone. when there's danger you should stay away from it. well they should make another TITANIC movie in 2012. it should be better. hope you saw RAISE THE TITANIC. the soundtrack was heaven.
@d4seasons wow, that was a quick reply. yeah, theres a 3-d version coming out in 2012, but that scene was my favourite, only people who have special edition like me would know that.
@bobkick5, that's impossible, most of those surface of the icebergs were taller than the titanic, and they were slippery, and they couldn't move the ship anyway after it was hit, it was done for sadly.
@mckfrr yeah but they had many theories about how it could have been prevented. #1 the look outs could had bonoclures (?), #2 the ship should have slowed down instead of speed up and #3 the ship could have taken another route.
My dad bought me this on tape for my 5th birthday, I love it! Last year, I was finally able to go to Belfast and see where the ship was built. Seeing the Titanic's dry dock shows the magnitude of how large it was. It's really unbelievable!
I'm not trying to be clever, but if I was the captain or a member of the control crew I would not only have 'all-stopped' the engines after hitting the icebergs , I would've then reversed the ship back to as near as possible to the icebergs. That way more people would have survived - there would be a good chance that people could clamber on top of them instead of freezing to death in the freezing water.
Though I had seen some Titanic films, & my father subscribes to National Geographic & have the Titanic issues of 85 & 86, It would THIS documentary that he bought in September of 1994 that I would forever be hook on Titanic.
The VHS got damaged & I hadn't seen SotT in nearly 15 years, Thanks dude:)

Couldn't agree more wmarino - what is so interesting about this is that in addition to finding the ship, Ballard has been spot-on in terms of exactly what happened to the ship. Nothing earth shattering has been discovered since they made this video - he really was ahead of his time in terms of theorizing about the details of the sinking.
I agree..Of all the Titanic docs, this is my favorite..Its so dramatic, and Martin Sheen did a great job narrating. was going to watch the episode of NG Explorer because they were showing an episode about sharks..They showed this first and I have been fascinated since..I actually met Dr, Ballard last year, and when I mentioned the Titanic, his face lit up like a child at christmas.
I thought that the people on the ship were a bunch of stuck up rich folks! Not being rude are anything its just that...that's how people were back then I guess! And they looked down on poor people like they were nothing more than the dirt that they walked on!
The Titanic weighed about 17,000 tons when launched. It was listed as having a displacement of 30-45,00 tons based on hull volume. No. The supertanker Knock Nevis is 1,504.10 feet in length, and has a gross tonnage of 260,941 tons. She no longer transports crude oil, and is berthed in the Persian Gulf as a Floating Storage and Offloading unit.
Cunard's Queen Mary 2 is currently the largest passenger carrying ship (1,132 feet 148,528 tons) but she'll be soon eclipsed by Royal Carribean's Oasis of the Seas (To be launched in Dec. '09) and Allure of The Seas (To be launched in 2010).
I havnt seen this documentary in years its fantastic. When I was a kid i wanted to grow up to be just like Bob Ballard. In some ways the wreckage belongs to him because he discovered it before anyone else
It's amazing to think 2 years, 3000 workers built it only for it to have one voyage cut very short.

i've always wanted to go down to the wreck itself but it costs a lot of money and I'm not quite sure i want to go that deep in a submarine

I havnt seen this documentary in years its fantastic. When I was a kid i wanted to grow up to be just like Bob Ballard. In some ways the wreckage belongs to him because he discovered it before anyone else

I agree 100%, excellent documentary and very well informed about the "unsinkable" ship.
