a gravity wave is just the technical term for a wave whose restoring force (what makes it oscillate) is gravity. most waves you think of (like on the surface of water) are gravity waves.
in metrology a gravity wave is what occurs when wind blows over a mountrain, or such, and it creates some kind of wave phenomena in the clouds at its trail. At least that's what i've pieced together from utube

a gravity wave is when Jesus in his mightiness one afternoon wants to show evidence of His father's existence by making clouds look as if you are a surfer peering from beneath the waves of God's created ocean water
could someone please explain gravity waves for me, im interested in gravitational effects. I am assuming that the instances of gravity waves shown to affect clouds is exactly that....gravitational wave anomolies affecting cloud formations??
you're thinking of the einstein gravity waves which are waves that travel through gravity, these are metrological gravity waves which are caused by wind flowing ower mounains, creating waves in the clouds. They just happen to have the same name, got me aswell at first :P
Not sure that's a Gravity wave, usually they are mesophereic. This looks like turbulence from a t-storm, it's probably caused by shearing of upper level winds, there's some good indications of that because of the mammatus clouds too!

this is one of the worst attempts to classify something that it's not I've ever seen. Obviously not a gravity wave. It's all sheer in this video!

mountains or in general high altitude terrain can also cause gravity waves. so in my opinion this is one
good shoot btw

Now I wonder how I'll know if it's something like that up in the sky..
Nice place, you can have a 360 view of the sky!
