In the 'Cart Wall", or RDplayer. Need the ability to have those buttons, not the playlist/log fire sequentially, at the minimum, or be able to go "control+click" on buttons in the cart wall/rd player, have those highlighted, and have those play sequentially. As it stands rivendell is just too complicated for my dinosaurs to comprehend.
Yep. I just came to this conclusion after looking at demos of "modern" automations, and they have nothing on 25 year old RDS Phantom. Too bad the company is in disarray and support is no longer available. This is basically what the "Quick Break" Function in Phantom is. type in 8 cart #'s, it plays them sequentially. We do a lot of live assist "on the fly". I saw an opensource cartdeck that could go with rivendell, I'll back up and run towards the brick wall really fast one more time.
I also highly recommend joining and posting in the mailing list via w w w .rivendellaudio. o r g The biggest hurdle is learning how to get Linux working, sound working, then SQL etc.... and compiling then installing or installing an older RPM. The 64-bit appliance CD is probably the best for beginners it has the OS and Rivendell on an install CD. It was a huge learning curve for me getting Suse 10.0 going then SQL then Rivendell a few years back. One day I'll give the appliance a crack.
@BREAKFm1 Hi there I originally downloaded the RPM installer for it from w w w.rivendellaudio.o r g and bought SUSE 10.0 burnt to CD from a local online auction site. Now they have a 64-bit appliance CD that you can install which will install Cent-OS and Rivendell on a 64-bit architecture machine. The older one for SUSE 10.0 is archived under previous downloads.
Can you recommend a setup/configuration manual? All I can find is an operation manual. It puzzles me that this program runs for everyone. All I've had are obstacles trying to get this to run.
I can't imagine this working out of the box for everyone, considering that I have to make tweak after tweak and it still doesn't work.
If I want to play something ad-hoc, I would click add, which brings up the mysql database/library and drop the cart on to a player. It doesn't have to be added to the log, queued then started. You can just add it to a player and hit start. So you can add, more, copy and delete anything from the panel, log or players.
@kiwirock30 I get that, but what if I want to play 8 elements in a row, unattended, from element 1 to 8. Start element 1, and it automatically plays all 8, ending when number 8 finishes playing.
@JugheadObama I'm obviously misinterpreting your use for automation, because Rivendell will play anything you add to the playlist or players in a row. Be default when you add an item, it's set to segue, so if it's on automatic and you start one, it won't stop until it runs out of items to play or told to stop, the point of automation. Perhaps what you are looking for is a cart machine programme with a windows style explorer interface to drag and drop like BSI's WaveCart or something similar?
RE:Phantom, that's okay, I believe if it isn't broken why fix it. RDAirPlay is either operated by adding a cart to one of three logs (main, aux1 and aux2), or play carts off the hotkeys/panel. There's a seperate module called RDPanel which is just a large cart player based on the look of the panel in RDAirPlay. My new years goal is to get LCD's and do a half decent video of the nitty gritty. I'm still ruining 1.7.2 (I think 2.1.1 is the latest).
I've been thru the manuals, and played around with the live CD, and can't seem to determine if it's possible to set up an impromptu commercial break on the fly independent of the log. This feature would likely be the deal breaker, as our ancient system (Phantom, don't laugh) has this capability (called quick break) and is needed to fill our live times, as they vary wildly in timing. (not to mention the 55 year old dinosaurs who operate a 25 year old design)
You could inquire about the streaming on the mailing list, it's an excellent resource and the developers are always answering questions as well. The Rivendell-dev is the one you want.
I only use it for basic playback and and voice tracking. Things like phone calls usually you'd record from a hybrid off the console in to the system as a voice track. As for streaming, I use a different Windows box for capturing and streaming to shoutcast, I think the newer version 2 can do that but I'm still using 1.7.2 branch.
@exercisesLukas Not sure if that reply worked or not. Unfortunately it requires ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) and if using Audioscience cards, the Linux drivers. It also depends on other Linux dependencies.
An operating system needs to go through months of broadcast use testing before it is considered for production use. After all, it is relied upon for months if not years without reboots. Using the latest operating system 5 days old in a critical use environment is almost suicide. But I am aware 11.4 is out, thanks.
Thanks for the comment. In the commercial broadcast industry, a lot of testing is done way before upgrading operating systems. The latest and flashest is not necessarily the best and more reliable. I still use Suse 10.0 for production, and Windows 2000 for production. The most advanced Windows being used is XP Professional. Most Rivendell installs are on Suse 10.2. I use 10.0 because it's still much faster and proven reliable for broadcast use.

You are out-of-date. openSUSE 11.4 has just been released on Mar.10,2011 while 11.3 on Jul,2010.
However, SUSE Linux Enterprise still stays on 11 SP1 released 1st half 2010. SLE11-SP1 uses a 11.2-equivalent base.
