  • Yall really need to stop with all this chemical free nonsense....are u going to stop using body soap, lotion perfume, dish detergent, laundry soap, toothpaste, etc....use common sense, how can something be linked to cancer if dont even what truly causes most types of cancer??

  • Yeh! For one year I only used water - ok but different - not the body - come my son's wedding thought I should use shampoo - reluctantly - and have been wondering what to do that was better than water since - will try it and see

  • I haven't used anything on my hair for the past three years and it looks and feels great, plus I get comments from others saying how nice it looks. All I do is, when under the shower, is wet my hair and massage it in the same way I would if it had shampoo in it. Don't use conditioner either so I'm saving lots of money, keeping my hair free of all those chemicals and helping the environment since the products are not being added to the water.

  • We didn't use these products before the 20th Century? Is that seriously an argument? Average life expectancy in the US wasn't even 50 years before the 20th century. What a joke

  • Yes, what's with her hair?

  • "seals the follicles"

    INCORRECT

The vinegar restores your hair's natural pH and helps to close the cuticle.

  • put the baking soda mixture into your hair BEFORE you get your hair wet. It works SO much better that way. Also, a drop of rosemary essential oil in the apple cider vinegar mix helps the smell, and is great for your scalp.

  • I tried the shampoo and I don't think it worked. It just felt like I was pouring water on my hair, even after shaking it. Am I doing something wrong? :/

  • this DIY rocks!!!!i recommend this for anyone with any kind of hair.I also heard this gets rid of dry skin in the scalp so that's a pretty cool for people that struggle with the problem.

  • Does this shampoo work for people with dandruff?

  • I've used baking soda on my hair for a while now, and whenever my hair gets dry I use an olive oil/egg hair mask, it's fabulous c:

  • WHY would anyone take seriously the "healthy hair advice" from someone wearing FAKE HAIR dyed a color not found naturally in humans?

Seriously...think about it. How much thought went into her presentation, other than..."look how wacky I am!"

  • Loved this for 4 months now. I added 1 t. of DrBonner liquid soap to shampoo mix. Still all natural ingredients but lets me see foam to make sure all my long hair is washed. (Is that why I haven't experienced this cold feeling?) I can go one week in between shampoo & conditioner. Drier hair so I finish w/ 1/4 t. of olive oil after towel drying. PLUS my hair began to grow again! I thought it was old age was causing slow growth. No. Long, healthy hair is back. I've missed that for years!

  • people concerned with cold shampoo, I put a a tablespoon if baking soda in my container and whe I am in the shower and ready to use it I fill it up to a pre measured line with my shower water. voila warm shampoo.

  • I tried this yesterday evening. my hair still looks/feels like - sorry for my language - shit today... and I can't find my regular shampoo.

    :(

  • WWJHD! I love this - I have been meaning to make my own shampoo and conditioner for a while. I hope I can do my own blog post on it too (maybe adding in some aromatherapy).

    xo, E

  • I've tried it, my hair got all greasy after one week. I tried to use it as often as possible, but I definitely need mild shampoo every second time.

  • What a hot chick!

  • Am I the only one that sees baking soda and vinegar and thinks "5th grade science fair volcano on my head"?

  • @katiekawaii

You are not mixing the baking soda and ACV together!

  • I've been trying out different brands for a long time trying to find something that won't leave all that chemical buildup. I'm gonna try this and see if it works! Sounds better than using mayo. Been there.. done that..

  • I've made my own paste:

Pour one box baking soda (1 pound) into a blender. Add 1/8 cup water. With blender at low speed, slowly mix in more water until desired consistency. I recommend pancake batter-thick.

Pour paste into an empty shampoo bottle, leaving some room to shake the paste when it settles between applications.

Apply shampoo paste on very damp hair, diluting and spreading it evenly and quickly. Formula makes about 6 ounces. Double ingredients for 12 ounces.

    Good luck!

  • @crayola77777 How is this working for you? I've found myself mixing up a new batch every day and am looking for a better solution.

  • @JonFordaz I learned that the more concentrated you make it, the more likely it is to leave your hair dry, regardless of how carefully you apply it. I think some different healthy ingredients are needed to mellow out the formidable moisture-absorbing power of baking soda.

  • Unless you mix baking soda with WARM water immediately before use, your solution will be room temperature, which when poured over your head will feel ICE COLD during a warm shower.

Hasn't anyone else encountered this problem?

  • @crayola77777 I've encountered the ice cold chill feeling. I've sort of just gotten over it. Or gotten used to it. I also have a friend who makes a paste of it, so that she never has to douse her whole head with room temp. water. A good way to go too. Good luck!

  • ive tried baking soda and its dried out my hair >.>.

  • @noirxwingz try using less baking soda. rinse it out thoroughly. and definitely condition with the vinegar. perhaps try giving your hair an olive oil conditioning treatment every now and again too.

  • I've been wanting an alternative to shampoo for quite a whil now. I've been using your mixture for the past 4 days and my hair and scalp feel the best they have in a very, very, long time. So thank you thank you thank you!!

  • thanks!

  • does this actually work ?

  • Gee~~I sure hope GristTV deletes the hater comments so I can read just non-argumentative comments.

  • boom! doing it.

  • You don't need expensive Apple Cider Vinegar, any cheap vinegar works just as well.

  • envirotards ....just don't outlaw shampoo - lice sucks

  • @STREETRACERONFUEL

Lol.. you do realize lice are more attracted to clean hair, right? They can move around more freely. Dirty hair has no relation to lice.

  • Do you want your hair to smell like vinegar or vanilla and cherries?

    I'll go for the vanilla,thanks.

  • @silvena86 I added orange flower water instead of normal water. Just be a little creative. If you don't have that maybe have a spritz of any other perfume or body splash above your hair afterwards. But really, you don't smell the vinegar.

  • Cool content. Good announcer. Except the fake hipster hair... jeez.

  • Baking soda is also good against oil-type dandruff. Baking soda fights fungus, which is what causes dandruff.

  • like i'm going to use apple cider vinegar in my hair. are the claims about shampoo and conditioner made in this video even true? what are the sources?

  • These women look like supermodels with their homemade shampoo.

  • @RocktheStageNYC you missed the point.

  • And yet the origional poster is wearing a wig, and the other commenter has scary looking hair...lol.

  • @vwwarrior I agree but I know a close friend who has been using the same DIY and she has beautiful hair. I will begin tonight! I have thick, long brown hair, sometimes dry, (my friends love it) and will update you on any progress.

  • how much do you use? the entire bottle or just a handful because when i put vinegar in my hair to get rid of build up i use a bunch

  • ..that old "Shampoo bottle" might also be a source of poison. Many plastics have chemicals that migrate from the plastic and it's not GOOD!

  • Obviously you're not a golfer.

  • @jeffedtom - Big Lebowski?

  • yeah, that is funny that she is worried about "chemicals" in her hair, and then dyes her hair a color not found in naturally in humans.

    ..

Cute girl, too bad she is such a sucker for trendy fashions that look stupid.

  • @misterobvious

I don't know if you actually watched the video, but it's a wig. -.-

  • @xxBeautifulxDeathxx

    irrelevant...

    STUPID and irrelevant

  • @misterobvious

On the contrary, it's very relevant to the comment I was replying to. She didn't dye her hair using any sort of chemical considering it's a wig, so if anything is irrelevant anywhere in this conversation, it's your original comment stating something I obviously revoked.

  • @xxBeautifulxDeathxx

    Nope. Completely irelevant.

  • @xxBeautifulxDeathxx

Her hair is fake. How many chemicals are in that?

  • @misterobvious

It's a wig, which could just as easily be made out of human hair (a lot of wigs are). It's dyed, yes, but there are no chemicals coming in direct contact with her scalpt, like they would be if she actually dyed her own hair or used some commercial shampoos.

  • dude this sucks. my hair smells like crap.

  • Even in an article of NPR, someone ruined her hair by using your recipe. If you want your hair to look its best AND save the planet, the best option is to wash your hair less often, from every other day to once per week and use organic shampoos and conditioners. Get a hair cut that compliments your hair type so that you can avoid using blow dryers and straighteners as much as possible. That will help both the environment and your hair to be healthy and beautiful.

  • @silvercruz1980

"someone ruined her hair by using your recipe"?

What a complete load of BS....This "recipe" is actually very MILD. And it works very well.

  • @misterobvious First, it might work for you if you have very greasy hair. I have dry, thick wavy hair thus I only use vinegar if I ran a marathon. Second, do your research before talking, type NPR, then "When It Comes To Shampoo, Less Is More" and read the whole thing. I am glad it worked for you but it will never work for me and as a fact, it did not work for someone else and if reality is BS, I have no problem with that.

  • @silvercruz1980

It's not JUST "vinegar"...it is rather heavily diluted with water - if you pay attention.

Same with the baking soda...it's diluted.

I DON'T "have very greasy hair".

    You're just an idiot.

  • @misterobvious thanks for clarifying the obvious. When I need to use vinegar, I used twice as much water and still have to use conditioner afterwards. Why do you call me an idiot? that does not make your argument right. That only makes you look like an idiot yourself. Why do you write "vinegar" is vinegar with water right? If this means so much to you and your self worth is so attached to it, you are right. Call me an idiot and win this argument. I am not going to get into a fight over shampoo.

  • @silvercruz1980

    Jesus, you're fucking retarded.

WATCH the video. It gives you the suggested proportions:

1 TABLESPOON of vinegar per CUP of water.

1 TABLESPOON baking soda per CUP of water.

These are very diluted concentrations that will certainly not do anyone harm.

With a proper rinse (and DRY) you don't smell like vinegar.Like ANY hair treatment, it takes more than 1 time to see dramatic changes.

    ..

But you nevermind about actually following instructions. Keep bitching away!

  • @silvercruz1980

Too late....you already DID get into an argument about "shampoo" (or lack thereof..)

Which you had never even tried anyway. Doubly stupid on your part!

  • Stinky Hippies

  • There are some seriously moronic people making comments on this video...

  • Trying this out tomorrow. As for further homemade goodies, MOISTURIZER. Face and hand/body.

  • I'm sorry, but it's just REALLY HARD to take someone seriously telling us that they don't want to put chemicals in their hair... when you've got a bright cranberry red dye job. How'd you get that... with chlorine bleach and real cranberries??? ;)

  • Look at that fucking hipster.

    Kind of cute actually.

  • oh, so it was a wig.

so, using baking soda and apple cider will leave your hair so shinny and full of volume that you'll be forced to cover it with a wig. gotcha.

  • @nubbs hehe, you have a shampoo that makes your hair longer - and coloured?

I imagine Umbra has shorter hair underneath ;)

  • toxic chemicals in shampoo? what do you think is in your hair dye?

  • what about the hair dye in your hair? is it a wig?

  • thank you! this is so helpful/useful.

i love all the DIYs, keep 'em coming, please!

  • Umbra, I wanna say something. I'm gonna put it out there; if you like it, you can take it, if you don't, send it right back. I want to be on you.

  • I use apple cider vinager or beer on my hair ... soft

  • Perfect timing! I've been collecting a bunch of recipes for DIY Shampoo for the past couple of weeks now.

  • @princess7strawberry That's awesome. Great minds think alike! I've been using DIY shampoo and conditioner for over 2 months now! This recipe has been working really well. My only advice is to make sure you rinse out the baking soda really well before you condition. It makes for much softer, shiny hair! Good luck!

  • @GristTV princess, doesn't the shampoo - which has the consistency of water - feel cold when you pour it on your head? I too like the shampoo but haven't figured out how to get rid of the cold sensation. Commercial shampoos are thick and concentrated, so they don't chill you even though they too are applied at room temperature.

Perhaps making the shampoo denser - like a paste - so it won't run when you apply it is the answer?
