  • 3:40, he's amazing :D

  • לא יאמן איזה יופי

    :)

  • Best hurdy gurdy I've ever heard thus far!

  • Is there anybody else playing along with him, or is he using computers to repeat segments he is making. like a looper for a guitar.

  • @darkscrypt yupppp looper :)

  • I'm still wondering why there's no mosh pit in front of the stage.

  • Where can I get more of this guy's music? I've been watching this video for about 3 years now and I'd love more.

  • I'm going to fit in. MArktumahnfeujhb fedfgdkseu vhbshgehdegfy cgesuy!

  • I am hurdy gurdy maker and player ,you can see my instruments and music on szerenyi.hu

    Szerenyi Béla

  • @szerenyi1

    Kedves nézőink!

"Vásárolj magyar terméket!" c. rovatunkat láthatták. :D

  • :O

  • Utmost rrrrrrrrespect! Wow, I'm speechless & I'm not often that!!!

  • good concert

  • Дійсно, хлопець просто мега, нова сторона корбованої ліри. Браво!

  • Fantastic Hurdy Gurdy Action!! evolution!!

  • ein Virtuose, aber schade, dass er so schräges zeug spielt, das so gar nicht zu leier passt.

  • @leyrerin

  • brilliant player! Bravo!

  • those bends...

    so sorrowful

  • I love the way you use the electronics to record your own accompanyment while you are playing the live show. Just fabulous!! I especially enjoy the eastern European/ middle eastern sound. Interesting transition to some really funky jazz.

  • awesome, i don't know that was possible with a hurdy-gurdy until yet ^^

  • Perfektion kriegt am gerät ... wenn man ander kurbel dreht : absolut genial

  • I feel like I'm on an acid trip listening to this man.

  • Fantastic performance ! The hurdy-gurdy gets here its well-deserved nobility.

  • geeeeeeeeeeniuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuusssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow damn, I'd kill for a DVD of this guys songs.

  • this is fantastic :D

  • This is fantastic. This man has a beast of a hurdy gurdy set up and talent that makes that instrument sound 1000x more versatile than I've ever heard it sound before. Incredible. Absolutely incredible.

  • wow! That's amazing!

  • awesome! i almost went to see you play last evening at the tiempo cafe on johannesgasse, wien, but i felt too tired, so didn't make it. now i wish i had!

  • \m/

  • HOW CAN I GET ONE OF THESE!? i'm so fascinated

  • This guy is amazing, but I couldn't hear it all. Please make it stop.

  • he's obviously using a loop pedal, an autowah (or more likely and envelope filter) and a harmonizer pedal.

  • There is clearly electric components to this hurdy gurdy.

  • I love his creativity in this regard. Electronics has allowed many artists to be one-man-bands.

  • Oh yes, indeed it has.

  • what the fuck this instrument??? O_O

  • It is a hurdy gurdy

  • Astounding! :-)

  • At the 4 minute mark, this goes from interesting to COMPLETELY AMAZING.

I love how he uses a synthesizer tone in his playing in addition to the hurdy gurdy sound. I need to hear more of this guy.

  • This seems like what Napolean Dynamite would like if he were to learn an instrument.

  • Wait is this a Hurdy Gurdy THEREMIN??? I mean there are no keys so it looks like he's playing purely censors????? Someone please tell me.

  • This + Playing Hurdy Gurdy Man by Donovan = insane

  • world class I must now buy a Hurdy Gurdy

  • It's origins come from India. Google 'Tippoo's Tiger' to see a real antique hurdy-gurdy.

  • sounds middle eastern, good though

  • :O ..the "steve vai" of ghironda... great

  • absolutely amazing

  • now,,,ive seen it all

  • I thought my Great Highland Bagpipes were weird enough...

  • wtf kind of instrument is that

  • this guy + a sack of mushrooms + 4 Persian belly dancers + a desert cave with good reverb = perfect weekend!

  • @crabtrap you speak the truth my friend

  • @crabtrap = what osama bin laden has been doing for the past 10 years

  • @seel311the only differance is Matthias Loibner is real.

  • @crabtrap doooooood!

  • from Mathias Loibner's website --

"For live-effects I use my laptop with Bidule by Plogue as VST host

and Möbius by Jeffrey S. Larson for looping."

Note the loop that he creates @ 3:45 and solos over it afterwards. Ain't nothing wrong with a solo artist who loops eh? Awesome video.

  • I just bought his album called "Vielle à roue" from Mondomix, and was THRILLED to see that the piece he plays in the medley starting at about 1:54 I believe, called Chasen Senem, is on the album! I'm such a fan now!

  • This may just be the coolest fucking thing I have ever seen. It makes me want to... well, just give up. That's what it makes me want to do.

  • You're hot. Your hurdy gurdy turns me on.

  • The whole thing is amazing, but the section starting at 1:03 blows my mind away. This is some of the most brilliant hurdy gurdy playing I've ever heard. There is a word for this class of musician: Virtuoso.

  • Its Dope

  • This guy f'ing SHREDS!!! Amazing!

  • this is brilliant! :D

  • Ei very nice Klezmer-Folk, I'd nver listened in a Hurdy Gurdy.

    Also I love loops...

  • Klezmer?!

  • I didn't know there was a genre out there - and I've nothing against actual folk music, or art music for that matter, using hurdy-gurdy. I guess I'm just tired of crap.

  • That he takes a medieval instrument and manages to create such vibrant music with it is a remarkable achievement. No folksy artsy crap - just a full-throttle gush of energy. This guy is totally awesome!

  • I happen to like folksy artsy crap...

But I know what you mean, and I agree. This is awesome.

  • what is the name of that instrument?

  • Very interesting!

  • Cool,thanks ;-)

  • What an an amazing instrument (and player), if I didn't have video I'd think there were multiple people playing at once.

  • Actually wait, looks like it's electric in some way; maybe that's why.

  • he's using a looping pedal of some sort

  • Eh... What?

If you're referring to the strings playing constantly, you've just proven that 99,9% of YT users open their mouth before finding out that they have no feckin' clue what they're talking about. At least, go read the wiki-pages on Hurdy-gurdys first, please.

There's enough uninformed vomit out here.

  • i love you...

  • I this what the Arabs play?

  • no, this is what russians play

  • thx , i wasnt tryin to be a smartass i was only tryin to discern what it maybe...

  • what is the name of this instrument?? thank you!!

  • Hurdy Gurdy =)

  • He lost my interest when he went all electronic on us. Sorry.

  • You're very very ignorant.

  • No, I have a strong opinion and expressed my personal taste. And that is something very very different from being ignorant.

  • He's using an electronic LOOP effect to create the repeated riffs while he plays along with them, creating the effect of several players at once!!!

  • can pitch bends and vibrato be done on all hurdy gurdies? I have not heard much other than here starting around 1:32.

Also are there any makers in the States that make Alto or Tenor Gurdies? It does not seem that Olympic Musical Instruments do.

  • Hey ASS!!! He's getting into the music. It's normal to look like that, especially considering trying to hold the instrument, and play it. Certainly looks better than some 666 retard being an ASS!!!

  • sorry that was my little brother. i left my account on while i was out of the room...sorry ):

  • sure it was....

  • no really i have never even heard of this instrument and whenever i go onto youtube my account is always logged on.

i think its cause i pressed the remeber me button when i logged on the first time i logged in so if my little brother goes on youtube he can always comment. im going to kill him

  • what?

  • Watching this gave the the sudden urge to learn how to play one of these, but then I realized I would never be as good as Matthias, and I felt discouraged.

  • amazing!!! amazing!!!

  • Actually he is using a phrase sampler and envelope filter... so it has been electrified probably with transducer pickups...

  • brutal! Ü

keep up with the great job!

  • You my friend, are in the highest way ABSOLUTELY Funky Supreme. This man keeps it fat and scratchy with the fuzzy side up, deny otherwise. Slunk on, you wailin gypsy fool, slunk on neeth the grundulose folds of the cosmos surfing those Herdi-Gerdinus waves.

  • <3!

  • the only problem is there is to much scratching noise...

other then that.. wonderful, just wonderfull

    nice work

  • Absolutely gorgeous.

  • The technique is astounding. Bravo!

  • O_O for those who dont understand what is going on he is using electronics to loop himself as well as distort the sound of the hurdy gurdy. Wow...this man is amazing not only at the instrument itself but he has a great sense of how to modernize an older folk instrument. Bravo!

  • Speechless......

  • THIS IS WHY I LOVE YOUTUBE.

  • It is indeed a type of violin- a 'wheel violin'. Instead of using a bow, the Crank turns a wheel, upon which the strings rest. This in turn vibrates the strings.

  • this freaking owns

  • woah man. like, wow

  • Wow! What an unusual sounding and looking instrument!

  • WOW! This guy is great. He needs to collaborate with Kevin Kmetz the American Shamisen (Japanese lute) master!

  • no he doesnt.

  • Awesome!

  • so does anyone know what kind of hurdy gurdy he is playing or where do get a good price on one. i looked at the site but they are all 3000 or more and the instructions to make one were rediculous

  • its a hurdy gurdy from austrichian maker Weichselbaumer. Price is from 5000 EUR, so far as I know.

  • holy shit!!!! i'm blown away. beautiful sound.

  • Excellent ! Makes me want to get one and some lessons. Alas, I appreciate it, but am sans talent.

  • that's psychedelic as shit

  • imagine this motherfucker with some delay and distortion, god damn

  • got some chops

  • DAAAAAAAAAAAMN!Thats friking awsome! i love the hurdy-gurdy!...u r awsome dude seriously WOW

  • I think my ears are bleeding! But in a sorta good way :) Awesome skills man!

  • shit hook a amp into that and throw him in metallica that was bad ass

  • definitively, not my favorite instrument. sorry,

  • dang. he's amazing

  • the juxtaposition of an medievel instrumant and the modern digital loop/effects pedal is amazing.

  • 8:26 runs through a wah pedal... nice

  • incredible!

  • Smash is right, watch the whole thing!! Cripes!!

  • Whoa, I'm glad I watched the whole thing. Watch the whole video, or at least listen to it.

  • MAN I WANT ONE OF THESE SO BAD!!!!

  • they're actually quite easy to make. you can find plans all over the internet

  • I might be possible to make it yourself but its far from easy, dude. Esp. if you like to have a good one to play.

  • Easy?? A lot of work, and not easy to make it sound good

  • in view no 123456 and post 196

  • Great musicianship. Very cool song.

And of course, gotta love the rustic and very unique sound of that medieval instrument. :D

  • Ace, wah wah hurdy gurdy!

  • Wow. Just. Wow.

  • YES

  • Holy

  • I finally got a hurdy-gurdy. If I can eventually be even half as good at it as Matthias is, I'll be happy!

  • That is gorgeous. :)

  • you really should post more!

  • Oh my god! this song is divine! i could listen to it over and over and over again! wow, i really am very thankful for this video. it is just so beautiful, awe inspiring, sexy and imaginative, i completely love it! thank you so much!

  • this is the coolest thing i've ever seen

  • That dude is pro

  • it has an electronic connection to a recorder which he can activate with a pedal

  • OK. Another question. How does the instrument continue to play when the crank isn't being turned?? Like around 4:30???

    Thanks.

  • He's got a looper pedal. When he intends to repeat a sequence, he'll record it with the pedal; then he'll stop a moment, regather his timing and then start cranking out another sequence. This way it sounds like he's playing 2 or 3 instruments and once. It's really awesome.

  • *at* once. Typo, heh.

  • After watching some of the other 'hurdy gurdy' posts, I was inclined to ask the question, "Do you ever vary the speed of the hand crank?". This DEFINITELY answers that question! By far the best I have ever heard on this instrument! Thanks for posting it!

  • If you saw a guy just sitting like that you would think he's "special".

  • amazing musicianship... I'm so glad this instrument (along with the people who know how to play it) are around.

  • haha nice, im the 111'111 viewer :D

    fucking nice!!!

  • Wow! What an amazing instrument...and to watch a pro play this is really cool.. Thanks for sharing....(he loves hiss preciousss!!)

  • zomg that was a kickass solo XD I wish I had one of those, it looks and sounds like a viola/cello on crack.

  • Hurdy Gurdy solo...GO!

  • Aside from that absolutely incredible performance, I bet that guy can kick like a mule.

  • the best ever.

  • looks like he forgot to take a really big crap before he started playing.

  • Great music! Never heard the hurdy-gurdy played like that before. ENCORE!

  • This really beats violinist!

  • lol, sure xD

  • Looks like he's wrestling a big fish.

  • :))) you're right

  • lol!
