  • We have a word in the English language, that we got from the Brezhoneg (Breton) language, which is chowder. So on May 19th, Saint Ivo's Day, have a bowl of clam chowder, to celebrate the great heritage of the Brezhoneg people. We celebrate the heritage of the Irish, with Saint Patrick's Day, so why not the Breton!

  • Dispar ! Komz a ran un tamm bihan brezhoneg ivez.

    Greetings from Brittany !

  • demat, i am just impressed that people outside Brittany would consider learning the breton language. Thank you for that because it's people like you that will keep this language alive. Hope that you didn't give up and again trugarez

  • Thanks for your effort, stecymru14. You are not the only one interested in these languages.

You challange people to do it better (I mean it in a friendly way). There have to come those first who are not even sure about the pronounciation to wake up the people who know it, but don't use the language. Show what you can!

  • Thanks for this video but I reckon that you should really upload a video if you know what you're talking about. I'm tryin to learn this language and unfortunately this doesn't help. :( Maybe you should remake it once you've learned some more. :)

@ConCon75 - just because you swear, it doesn't make everything you say either more valid than everyone else nor does it make it right because by swearing you've lost the right to even portray a message. if you want to through your toys out of ur pram...

  • go raibh maith agat! Bhí mé i Breizh cupla seachtain o shin ag bualadh le my boyfriends clann! Does Brezhoneg come from Welsh or something? Bhi ionadh orm how similar the 2 languages are.

Ne oa ket fall, bevet Cymru/Kembre!

  • He made it pretty clear that he's not trying teach Breton, especially as he repeatedly expressed a lack of certainty regarding the pronunciation.

Oh, and congratulations on bringing in some insult involving the English. That was extremely original, witty and broad-minded. Well-done. You're clearly not attuned to the accents of the British Isles if you think he sounds English. Cymro ydy fe, heb os nac onibai.

Besides, everyone's allowed to show an interest in Celtic languages.

  • @YaBrothersMother

"congrats on an insult involving the english" you bigoted fuckwitt, it's wankers like you that perpetuate hatred you make me sick

  • Fuck you man, I'm English, I'm Irish, I'll speak both languages. You know the bad things the english did was to stop people speaking the gaelic languages. The shoe is on the other foot now is it?

Go n-ithe an cat thú, is go n-ithe an diabhal an cat

  • I'm learning Irish ;)

  • Colourful language, dude. So much for the Celts huh? Dydi'r byd ddim yn angen pobl fel chi! Slán

  • Dún do chlab Giannisacco!

  • Oh tá Gaeilge agat huh? To be honest, I'd say "dún 'ur clab".... seeing as you don't know me that well. Ond da iawn am drio :)

  • LOL he's Welsh you ignorant fuck

  • @giannisacco He's Welsh you idiot.

  • For good evening, better to say "Noz'vad". For an English, I would instruct him to pronounce "Nose Vaod"

Ah, so good!! the "Yech'ed mad" !!! I love it ! You pronounce it almost perfectly !

Kenavo, my friend! Come to Breizh one of these days. I'll teach you how to speak my ancestors' language (well, not that old ancestors, since Breton was my grandparents' first language)

  • @YLHB teach me!

  • Dude when are you going to do some Irish videos? and I guess Dadai na Nollaig didn't bring you a new web cam? Sonas ort!

  • Ehehe mat-tre paotr domaj eo 'vije ken fall ar son... Chans vat gant Rhisiart! ;-)

  • Wyt ti'n adnabod Rhisiart Hincks?

  • Do you speak any of those languages you're posting about? I would love to hear Manx and Cornish, because they're such rare languages. One of my big interests are languages too. It's merely Scandinavian languages though since I speak a Scandinavian language myself. And oh, I love the British accent, it's just adorable!

  • I don't speak all of the languages fluently. I speak Welsh and am learning Cornish, Breton and Irish.... the latter two in University. I have videos on all the Celtic languages if you fancy a look!

  • Ah okay. Well, I've already looked at some of your videos, but I'm more searching for a video here on YouTube where I can hear one of those languages been spoken fluent. I enjoy listening to a language I haven't heard before and if I like what I hear, then the possibility for actually learning the language or just learning sentences, crosses my mind. I would first like to hear them been spoken fluent first, but I can't find any video here on YouTube with for example the Manx language.

  • Breton can be heard on the following online radio stations. Just google:

*France Bleu Breiz Izel - Informations (and look for) Keleier Breizh (news)

*radio stalig (various radio stations. Music and talking in french and breton)

YOUTUBE (stories by native speakers without the french accent):

    *Roched un den eürus

*Ar sakrist hag ar marc'hadour-lousoù (southeast dialect)

  • Here the difference between a native (strong R!) and a "neo" (French accent). Fill in the names in the "search box"

Roched un den eürus ("A shirt of a happy man", native)

    Frañs 3 / 17 a viz Ebrel 2007 ("item on France 3 journal, April 17, 2007", Neo)

  • Accents part II

Very old people and lucky people who learnt it from their grandparents (like me;)) speak (and write!) differently! We normally use more "French & international words" though like "mersi" (trugarez), "boñjour" (demad), and, as I said, "telefon" (pellgomz)

  • A final one about accents...

It is true nowadays you hear a lot of breton-speaking people with a french accent. But that's not because "being so close to French speakers for so long"... It's because Paris tried to destroy our language so most people from around 0 to 70 were/are brought up only with french. Those who later tried to learn the language again have a french accent and use funny "new" words like "pellgomz" for "telefon".

  • I hear those words. 'Pellgomz' is the Cornish word for television (well, peLgomz). I use Skingomz in my lessons.

  • 'Pellgomz' Cornish for television?

Funny :) Telephone seems more logical to me (pell = far, komz = to speak). Skingomz is used for 'radio' and skinwell for 'television'... but whatever, i never use these words anyway;)

  • haha, cool!

"Penaos (not penoas) ema ar bed ganeoc'h? (not: ganoec'h) " littarly means: "how is the world with you (plural)?". Your pronunciation is quite good indeed! I shall try to write it phonaticly correct (my dialect) in English... "penoss ma ar bate ganoch" ("scottish" ch of corse). Most important here is to pronounce "bed" (world) with a long e (like in English "fate") and not like English "bed". The breton word "bet" (short e) means "been"

  • I hadn't actually has any lessons in Brezhoneg when I posted this video so I'm not suprised it looks bad. When I watch this video now I know what I do, it seems poor. Another video is on the cards I think!

  • It doesn't look bad, your pronunciation is (almost) good. I only wondered where you got the spelling from. Can you tell me which method you use?

  • It does not look bad. You said it very well. I was only wondering about the spelling. Can I ask what books you use?

  • I used 'Yec'hed mat! Iechyd da!" by Zonia Bowen. It is a Welsh-Breton book. It was very .... interesting .... making the video becuase I was having to translate words from Welsh to English and the to Breton for you guys.

More videos on Breton coming soon.... I'll fire some of the things I've been learning in university onto it for you.... which is done through Welsh too - woohoo :( lol

  • Boñjour doc'h da'n oll!

So... no breton speakers here huh? Well, if you need some help with the pronunciation, grammar or words... just ask!

I like explaining my language ;)(one of 3 actually)

    kenô doc'h!

    YT

  • Trugarez. If I learn this language successfully it will be one of 3 for me.... along with many others which I'm attempting to learn.

  • Maybe you're right. It's an extremely interesting thought but I guess we'll never find out. When I posted this Brezhoneg video, I wasn't actually learning the language. Now, however, I am. I can tell you it is a very big French twang. It's like speaking Welsh.... with a French accent....

  • Hey stecymru14 - from the FEW Breton videos on YouTube (very few), it seems to be spoken with a French accent/twang! This is obviously from being so close to French speakers for so long. You say you worry about your pronunciation, I wonder if maybe your pronunciation is nearer to the origional thing? Gaelige, Gaelic, Welsh sound simmilar while totally foreign to English - are these then more 'accurate' to old Celtic?.. Probably utter nonsense but just a thought..

  • Appaling sound - a shame because its a really interesting topic! Do it again!! :)

  • I will be posting moresoon - with hopefully better sound quality. I'm a student (learning Breton and Irish through Welsh) so I'm slightly too poor to purchase any hi-tech equipment. £4 webcam from Tesco - does the trick :P

  • I know exactly where youre coming from mate.. I too am a poor student (although I'm a wee bit older - 27). I want to learn Gaelige and German (Im half Irish half German). The Celtic languages are very, very beautiful (particularily when spoke by a girl!) and I'm interested in learning myself once I've done my Archaeology degree, would like to teach my future kids thier heritage and languages.. Keep up the good work!

  • I'm a Celtic studies/languages Major. These are tough languages and I think your doing wonderfully! Keep it up! Its good to know that there are others preserving these old languages! Yec'hed mat!

  • Hi! Well this is not too bad. You should keep working on Breton! Have you tried websites like kervarker? Good luck anyway, chañs vat!

  • diolch - thank you

am i right in saying Brezhoneg is pronounced similarly to Cymraeg (Welsh)?

  • Well I don't know Welsh, but I guess so. Just Welsh is pronounced a bit more like English and Breton like French, but it may not be systematic.

  • No. I'd suppose that's right. I'd say Kernewek (Cornish) is more English than Cymraeg (Welsh) but I know what you mean. Would you consider posting Brezhoneg videos?

  • Unfortunately I have no such videos, but you can find some on France3 website, but also on GwagennTV. You should have a look!

  • I will but I'm not too good on the French laanguage front.... I did it until I was 14 - started when I was 11. I've forgotten loads

  • Very happy to see a non-breton learning my national language! c'mon! About the similrity between welsh and breton pronounciations you're right! a hundred years ago breton and welsh fishermen could almost understand each other when they met at sea!

  • That's true Celts for you isn't it. I love anything Celtic and I know you won't mind me saying that I'd consided Brezhoneg MY language too as we're all Celts. I'm going to have to learn it soon. Great language. Try Welsh!

  • You're absolutely right! breton cornish and welsh one brytonic people, scot manx and irish our brothers!

I fell so close of my welsh brothers that I'll support Wales vs Canada in Nantes (former and eternal breton capital) in september.
