I'm curious who thinks that whatever the creature replicates actually knows its the thing? Or perhaps it doesn't realize it until it things out?  One idea I thought is its a virus that duplicates everything, the humans thoughts, memories.. etc. Then when it senses its prey alone it overrides and absorbs that.

Well Palmer knew for shure,I think thing whe posses organism is hidding in him,but its a life Inside hideout..

Dog (thing) released threat among other dogs,I think they know that they are not what they show..

@Patriot1389 well, only the dog and blair knew because they were consumed by the original thing the others were just bits of it so they didnt knew like palmer he sat very calmly and didnt do anything till they discovered its him,and the fat guy ( i cant remember his name ) that was knocked off didnt know for sure and he transformed because the thing thought the doctor is harming him with the defebrilator

@bob4o99 See who enters first to turn off the fire (sorry for english) when they burn the dog..Palmer and Norris to protect his kind...So they were things first,at the end dog entered in Norris room (scene with the shadow on the wall)..Agree for Blair in fact I think the Blair was thing when he smashed all stuff becouse thing didnt want more humans before dont turn everybody..Thing wanted isolation to become everyone in camp till spring..

In the film, they know they are things immediately. Why? the human is killed completely.......and then copied......so they won't be wondering whether or not they are things., because they are no longer human. They want to spread and duplicate.

@thomas007 If you watched The Thing 2011 when Kate tells Sam how she knew he wasn't the thing earlier cause he still had his ear ring but when he touched his ear, the ear ring was no longer there,only problem was he touched the wrong ear....thats how she knew he had turned into the thing.i know we are trying to make too much sense out of the film but i think that since it is new virus that infects new people, the makers kinda make it seem like the alien virus has memory as well :P
