I just realized their new use in life! On Kink's "Sex Machines" site, possibly with a few modifications (a seat) and some silicon involved.
More seriously, I remember reading a paper about determining the alloying content / dissolved gas in metals which involved putting some insulation around the vice and then submerging the block in LN2. The shaper could then dig through and retrieve a fresh sample without any of the more volatile or reactive components changing on the way out.
There is some overlap in capability, but the shaper can do inside splines, dovetails, and remove massive amounts of metal with simple shop-maintained cutters. All you need are HSS blanks ground to suit the purpose. And you can cut gears, too.
If you plan well and don't fall asleep :) you can run them unattended for long job runs. They don't do much, fast.
Very nicely shot showing the crank mechanism and the ram in action simultaneously. It is a bit sad that the world has largely moved on from the world of shapers and planers. Even the spell check on UTube doesn't know what to do with shapers as a word. Few things show tool and metal cutting geometry better than a shaper. I find the cutting action rather therapeutic. Nice video.
Pretty neat! I love the old shapers. I'm finishing the restoration of my 7" Atlas shaper, which begs the question, why didn't you paint it?! Machine works great, but damn its ugly!! :-)
I had the cuss for only a few days when I took these vids. Since then I've pulled it apart piece by piece cleaning it up and painting it. Still a lot to do and it's been too cold to paint but things should pick up again on this project. But - nobody's ever made a gorgeous shaper! :)
Okay, now I understand...the video said it was "restored", which made me wonder and comment the way I did. Believe me, I know what a pain it is to prepare these big heavy pieces for painting. Hope things warm up for you soon.
By the way, the music is an interesting choice. I was familiar with Kenny Loggins version. Wondering who originally wrote the song, I went to Wikipedia and come to find it dates back to the Civil War! I had never heard it before I heard the Loggins version.
I have hundreds of CD's by Hawaiian artists and thousands of songs. The cadence of the shaper screamed for a lullaby and this is a really good one. This lullaby is actually rather bizarre when you read all the original lyrics but it's been reworked over the years.
Eyep - that's one reason shapers are considered so dangerous. This particular machine is very quiet and has just one speed right now so is especially mesmerizing. The next video will have audio of the machine itself. These clips had really bad sound quality so I went with the music - what better track than a lullaby?
:) That already happened - this is the finishing cut. In fact I was testing several new finishing cutter geometries and was filming them. I'll splice in a cut I took that made the belts slip. Very impressive - the steel coming off looks like curly fries.
Thanks for sticking up for the shaper! It's a great machine. One day I hope to be a caretaker for one. The music is great also. :)

Does a metal shaper offer any advantages in comparison with a mill or can a mill do everything a metalshaper does.

Well thank him for me! I like it too. My wife actually prefers the music and would like me to take her to Hana, Maui to hear it live :)
