Finally, it is not necessary for a steel structure to come close to the melting point of steel for it to fail. You raise the temperature enough, the crystal structure of the steel starts changing, phases start separating, and the physical properties of the steel start changing dramatically. Not to mention that heating it too quickly can cause strong thermal gradients that can cause physical damage, as well.

A little physics lesson for a couple of annoying people.

First of all, one of the consequences of the second law of thermodynamics is that a flame will not heat metal above the flame temperature. If a flame were at, say 1400, and the metal were somehow at, say 1600, the hot gases would actually absorb heat from the metal, cooling it off.

Second of all, MIG welding doesn't use a flame, it uses a current flowing through the metal to provide the heat to melt it.

@skeetskeetskeet420 don't know much about physics, but i do know that when a fire burns near metal, the metal gets hotter like welding. my dad is a MIG welder he holds the flame to 2 pieces of metal. the metal melts and binds together. if you hold metal under a hot fire it will melt eventually because the heat will build up in the metal. the fire doesn't have to be 2795 to melt, the metal has to be that hot.
