Plus, Michael is very capable of singing beautifully in the lower pitches - I suppose it's baritone, but I'm not musically inclined so I've no idea. He's got a tremendously versatile voice.
Butler's voice is NOT deeper. His attempt at singing this is in the exact same key. The big difference is GB's voice is rough and harsh, and not at all like 'the voice of an angel' which is how it's supposed to be as described in the book. Crawford's voice actually meets that description and more. His creation and portrayal of the role can never be topped, let alone matched. Power? MC's voice is known for it's power when he sings out.
Having a deeper voice does not make one more masculine - there is nothing feminine about Michael's voice. Unfortunately some people still cling to the stereotype of maleness being defined by deep voice or macho behaviour. Butler shouldn't ever be compared to Michael as they aren't in the same league, but then I think the latter is brilliant in anything he does and can't ever be topped as the Phantom - not just by Butler. His tenor is gorgeous and compelling - no one does it like he does.
Gerad has a deeper voice and Crawford's is higher pitched and yes it is less masculine, he might have been the man who shaped the role, however Butler's voice to me is just more powerful and better for the phantom
@poola2539 No way, I appreciate you may prefer Gerard in the film, but there wasn't anything girly or less superior to Crawford. He was the original and he owned and shaped the role for everyone else to come

I'm probably going to get a lot of hate from this comment. Sorry but I think I like the 2004 version better. I like Emmy rossum and gerard butler better.
Michael is a comic genius - he was phenomenally great as Frank Spencer. He'd previously had success on the stage, but from Billy onward, wow..... There is nothing he can't do and do brilliantly.
The talent of these two almost beyond belief. Go back 33 years to 1978; he was playing Frank Spencer in Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and she was singing "I Lost My Heart To A Star Ship Trooper" in Hot Gossip. Who would have thought then that these two would rise to the heights that they did.
Hapey, that's very true - Michael has a great love for Erik, it's almost a spiritual bond. When you hear him talk about the Phantom, it's clear that his feelings for him run deep, so in a way he's not acting on stage so much as feeling. He once visited a boy in a hospital who was deformed and whose mother had to hide him away ; he was extremely touched and channeled his emotions and that pain into his performance.
What makes Michael different is that he is not acting a part. His heart and soul is in every movement and word. Some actors just play the mysterious "phantom", but Michael simply plays a man who wants to be loved for himself. @4:53 if you look into his eyes and his left side of his face you see a normal man, you see genuine feeling and truth. There will never be another one who feels Erik such as Michael.
He's an absolutely incredible talent - there is just nothing this man can not do. You just have to watch him in Barnum (phenomenal performance - a true tour de force) to have your mind boggled. He can make you laugh and cry within the span of a few minutes - that's rare and it's the sign of a brilliant actor. It's available on DVD, so for any Michael Crawford fan, it's a must. More relevant to this clip, how sexy is it when he runs his hands over his hair and down his body?
This is as good as it gets for me as the only video available will very likely never be released. What a shame that there is no permanent record of Michael's performance in this role - a role he absolutely adores. It still bothers him to this day - and I don't blame him. What a voice and what an actor. I never saw him live, but hearing him sing and watching clips, he's just "it" for me. The man and the role are like one - it's really a beautiful thing, how much he loves the Phantom/Erik.
This is utterly AMAZING. It's so annoying to think that there are people who think of Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum as the best Phantom and Christine, when Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman have and always will be the BEST.
Michael is awesome, but does anyone else notice that in a lot of videos of him in the title song, he misses his cue to go to the organ? he is supposed to be there and pretend to play when she hits the high E.
I really wonder if this was performed live at the tonys or if they recorded it from a performance/dress rehearsal at the Phantom's regular theatre and broadcast it at the ceramony.
...also love it when MC runs his hands through his hair, then down his body, and slithers over to her as she is hitting the high E. Great piece of business -- also cements the character. He is just superb.
This one is better - the same scene is posted by someone else and is totally out of sync - which ruins it.
I have sung Christine and Brightman has absolutely no grasp, although her voice is technically very good, intonation not always up to snuff and way too much vibrato (notes tend to wobble a little) - (not what you know but who you know) - but MC, although not a brilliant tenor, has an elegant intonation that impacts every note that he sings with clarity and purity. By far the best phantom.
@tagdam1 Not that I agree with DinaManatee in regards to Crawford. But Brightman's voice makes me queasy. Not that I'm saying she can't sing, just her type of voice(And a lot of Sopranos for that matter) don't mesh well with my ears. We can't help how our ears and brains perceive sound.
@PhantomSith True, Sarah's vibrato really annoys me. Listen to Claire Moore & foreign sopranos who play Christine and sing without voices warbly like hers. Listen to Hong Kwang Ho & Kim So Hyun - they're both really good.
I saw Phantom at Her Majesty's in London, just a few weeks before Michael Crawford left and took it to Broadway, he was spellbinding, absolutely spellbinding. I've seen the show several times since, and although all the Phantoms were great, none could touch him, not in voice or stage presence.
@collbearorlando Although I agree that Crawford is the king of the role, but Chaffey High schools Gabe Navarro has to be one of the best I've ever seen as well as their production of this.
I still get goosebumps each time I hear these two sing. Goodness, no one has managed to match these two at all, and especially Crawford. Oh my gosh, I wish I was born a decade or two earlier to have seen them. ;o;

Lots of people agree that ms.Brightman, though an impressive soprano, is not suited for the role of Lerouxs' Christine. Other people give her the necessary respect for being the first Webber Christine, which of course she deserver. I am of opinion that she doesn't look charming and that her stage acting is wooden. No need to bicker about it, nothing like personal taste.
The girl is doing an orgasm song...the man (phantom) is demanding it....THIS is why the Phantom of the Opera will remain popular for now and many years from now......sex will most likely ALWAYS sell tickets.
I love the musical and the film! Both phantoms are beautiful in their own way, Crawford being the seductive, sensual phantom, and butler being the raw, passionate phantom. Both are amazing in my opinion. :D
For some stupid reason, whether I've watched or heard it, I always cry like a baby at the end!!! Seems to be innate! :D!
BTW, there's somewhere in youtube (totally forgot the username) that somebody posted the phantom 25th!!! To some fellows who have not seen it on stage, I recommend this to you! just type in phantom 25th, I guess.
I like Crawford's voice, but his acting is so damn melodramatic it goes past actually resonating and just become silly. It'd be nice if we could see or hear a real person in there somewhere.
@sabyr If you knew the background of this play, this is exactly the way the director Hal Prince wanted it; "victorian melodrama" which Crawford created beautifully. And Crawford is working today too, in the title role of the hit show of Phantom's composer Andrew Lloyd Webber's production of "The Wizard of Oz" in London's West End.
@sabyr The reason his actions are so overdone is because its on stage. In a movie, their movements can be little because the camera can zoom in and capture that one movement. On stage, people in the balcony and 10 rows back and farther cant see subtle movements, so it has to be big and exaggerated, which does look strange when up close. Not trying to offend your comment, just trying to help :)
@katarinawatch I don't understand what you mean when you say 'Sarah Brightman is simply not Christine in any way'. Perhaps you need reminding: a) Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the show FOR her. No Brightman = no phantom! b) She was the original Christine so all others who came after her owe a great deal of their performance to her interpretation - even Emmy Rossum in the awful film version. Please do some basic research before posting silly comments like that.
@classicalhero7 'Emmy was the highlight of the movie'? She is charming and has a lovely manner but she couldn't sing that role or do it justice. A real pity.
@katarinawatch The REAL Christine Daae? This is a response to the clip above featuring actors in the musical. What on earth has the REAL Christine Daae got to do with it??!! Sarah Brightman created the role on STAGE. The book was freely adapted for that purpose. We all have our own image of Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights but this discussion is about a theatrical adaptation. If Brightman is not Christine for you go back to the book and enjoy!
The Music of the Night is my favorite song of all time. No matter how many times I listen to it, I never get tired. This is absolutely the most beautiful song I've ever heard in my life. And The Phantom of the Opera is the most beautiful and sad love story I've ever heard of and seen. Michael Crawford's voice is just amazing and outstanding! So is Sarah Brightman's. I think that Andrew Lloyd Webber made the right decision of putting Michael as the "Phantom" instead of Steve Harley.
Through 25 years still not one lead actor can compare to th original phantom that is michael crawford and there's been a lot of great phantoms during that time. His voice is simply perfect for the role.
@eyedea81 George Lee Andrews, who played Andre, one of the opera's owners, opposite Crawford on Broadway all the way up to a few weeks ago, also said Michael was his favorite Phantom. He's been on stage with a lot of people in the Phantom's role and Crawford was the best in his learned opinion and doesn't mind saying so.
Crawford does have a great voice and as the Phantom he was very creepy.I could see why Christine would run away from him. But Gerry Butler is much better looking and is a movie actor not a stage actor so his performance was much more believable.Butler was sooooo sexy and romantic you could see the emotion on his face even with the mask on....I would have chosen the Phantom over Raul in the movie version!.
@edensgatekeeper1 I would do the exact opposite, I would run into the arms of Crawford's Phantom and run like heck from Butlers. Just one note of any song he sings would drive me insane (lol).
@edensgatekeeper1 All the ladies who saw Crawford's Phantom in the play would have thrown themselves at his Phantom. It was a well publicized fact, he was a major sex symbol!
@lucasvernieri well, the reason I do is because Gerry Butler is the sexiest man on the planet.........if that sounds mindless and sexist, so be it lol ;)
On this 25th anniversary show last Sunday, When Crawford made his appearance onstage at the end of the show, he got thunderous applause from the audience, and a standing ovation. Ramin Karimloo took his hand and bowed to him and sang "you alone can make our song take flight". A wonderful moment for the original Phantom.
Said it before will say it again: on this the 25th anniversary of the opening night of this show at Her Majesty's Theater, London England----Michael Crawford was the true and only phantom.
He could have seduced a nun with a christmas carol.
I remember my dad buying the album on cassette when I was 8 or 9 and yes Frank Spencer was singing but as people have all said the original was the best I think.
I can't believe this guy is the same guy in Some Mother's do 'Ave 'Em - from a naive clumsy accidental prone with a funny voice to a manipulative musical genious with an angelic voice
@thephantomofthemetal It just shows what a tremendously versatile actor Crawford is, excelling in all aspects of entertainment. No wonder he's so exceptionally popular worldwide.
@thephantomofthemetal It just shows what a tremendously versatile actor Crawford is, excelling in all aspects of entertainment. No wonder he's so exceptionally popular worldwide.
Michael Crawford is always going to be the phantom, his voice is amazing, it evokes such passion. Both of them , just beautiful strong amazing voices.
This is absolutey stunning. And @NaomisCalling: You are so right! Michael Crawford is an idol of mine. I swear we are not worthy of Andrew Lloyd Weber.
Please don't start throwing things at me when I say this, but I've heard better Phantoms than Crawford. I'm not saying he's the worst, but he's not the best either, IMO. To me, he doesn't sound that seductive. I think some of the more recent Phantoms, like John Owen Jones, sound more seductive. If I had been alive when POTO debuted, I might think differently.
Yes, Crawford literally created the way the Phantom is portrayed. It's just that no one since him can do it as superbly as he did. The smooth fluid movements, the anguish and heartbreak, he lived the role, he didn't just play it.
Why do we have to argue about who was better? Can't we just be happy that they made the movie in the first place so that people who aren't theater buffs were turned onto the awesomeness that is this show?
Having seen "Phantom" more than 30 times - 8 of those in the very beginning with Michael Crawford - I can safely tell that NO ONE comes even vaguely close to touching Crawford's star and signature here. Webber wrote this role for him - virtually - and it shows. No matter what else anyone may think or say of Michael Crawford, he gave body and soul to the Phantom - a truly great show - even if it is now all "tourist'ed" out.
@eavitale055 I too, saw Crawford in this role several time, and I agree wholeheartedly with you. I also saw successors in the role, and as you say, no one really comes up to his breathtaking portrayal of the Phantom. Those of us who saw him were truly spoiled forever.
@Ariott13121 Darling, I hate to break it to you but this role was written FOR Sarah Brightman's voice, thus it really has to suit her. It may not now, due to the maturation of the voice, but it's something you have to keep in mind when watching the originals. Christine's part was written and designed around Sarah and her talents.
Sara Brightman's voice is beautiful, but she's not all that pretty...... It makes me VERY happy that people recognized her for her talent and not her looks.
Tim Martin Gleason was amazing to see too! He did the role of Phatom in the US touring company and Raoul on Broadway. He has a beautiful voice. Closest thing I've heard to Mr. Crawford's performance live.
@eml3192011 i have some audio bits from his performance in my channel. There are a few moments where he sounds JUST like Michael Crawford, especially in the final lair
@phantomofopera91 Check out your Tim Martin Gleason videos. Thank you! They are fantastic. I've got to get up to NYC to see the show again. I'm still bummed out that the tour ended. Makes it a lot harder, but certainly not impossible. Keep posting videos! I'm a fan!
@phantomofopera91 I checked out your Tim Martin Gleason videos. I'm so glad you have those to post! I'd give almost anything to see him in the role on stage again. I'm so bummed that the tour ended. Guess I'll have to make my way up to NYC for a Phantom-fix soon! Keep posting!!
Plus, Michael is very capable of singing beautifully in the lower pitches - I suppose it's baritone, but I'm not musically inclined so I've no idea. He's got a tremendously versatile voice.

It's the 80's dude.
DrStrangefate 3 months ago
@DrStrangefate ...And? There were plenty of good actors in the 80s. Many of them are still working now.
sabyr 3 months ago
@sabyr If you knew the background of this play, this is exactly the way the director Hal Prince wanted it; "victorian melodrama" which Crawford created beautifully. And Crawford is working today too, in the title role of the hit show of Phantom's composer Andrew Lloyd Webber's production of "The Wizard of Oz" in London's West End.
thephantom1946 3 months ago 3
@thephantom1946 Ah, okay. I have to say I disagree with the director's approach, but I guess that redeems Crawford's performance a bit.
sabyr 3 months ago
@sabyr The reason his actions are so overdone is because its on stage. In a movie, their movements can be little because the camera can zoom in and capture that one movement. On stage, people in the balcony and 10 rows back and farther cant see subtle movements, so it has to be big and exaggerated, which does look strange when up close. Not trying to offend your comment, just trying to help :)
KLT2013 3 months ago 2
Yes they both have great voices, but Sarah Brightman is simply not Christine in any way, and Crawford seems a bit losing of the emotion.
katarinawatch 3 months ago
@katarinawatch I don't understand what you mean when you say 'Sarah Brightman is simply not Christine in any way'. Perhaps you need reminding: a) Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the show FOR her. No Brightman = no phantom! b) She was the original Christine so all others who came after her owe a great deal of their performance to her interpretation - even Emmy Rossum in the awful film version. Please do some basic research before posting silly comments like that.

@Dianaemanuel Emmy was the highlight of the movie, so what are you going on about?
classicalhero7 3 months ago
@classicalhero7 'Emmy was the highlight of the movie'? She is charming and has a lovely manner but she couldn't sing that role or do it justice. A real pity.
Dianaemanuel 3 months ago 2
@Dianaemanuel i'm talking about the REAL Christine Daae. maybe you should read the book.
katarinawatch 3 months ago

I think that Andrew Lloyd Webber made the right decision of putting Michael as the "Phantom" instead of Steve Harley.
hansg888 3 months ago 2
Through 25 years still not one lead actor can compare to th original phantom that is michael crawford and there's been a lot of great phantoms during that time. His voice is simply perfect for the role.
eyedea81 3 months ago 67
@eyedea81 George Lee Andrews, who played Andre, one of the opera's owners, opposite Crawford on Broadway all the way up to a few weeks ago, also said Michael was his favorite Phantom. He's been on stage with a lot of people in the Phantom's role and Crawford was the best in his learned opinion and doesn't mind saying so.

carbomb19 3 months ago
Crawford does have a great voice and as the Phantom he was very creepy.I could see why Christine would run away from him. But Gerry Butler is much better looking and is a movie actor not a stage actor so his performance was much more believable.Butler was sooooo sexy and romantic you could see the emotion on his face even with the mask on....I would have chosen the Phantom over Raul in the movie version!.
edensgatekeeper1 3 months ago
@edensgatekeeper1 I would do the exact opposite, I would run into the arms of Crawford's Phantom and run like heck from Butlers. Just one note of any song he sings would drive me insane (lol).
MrsDowney1020 3 months ago 7
@edensgatekeeper1 All the ladies who saw Crawford's Phantom in the play would have thrown themselves at his Phantom. It was a well publicized fact, he was a major sex symbol!

@lucasvernieri well, the reason I do is because Gerry Butler is the sexiest man on the planet.........if that sounds mindless and sexist, so be it lol ;)

@luvphantom2004 If you think that is okay, but what is being evaluated here is the voice, and in this case Michael Crawford is infinitely superior

On this 25th anniversary show last Sunday, When Crawford made his appearance onstage at the end of the show, he got thunderous applause from the audience, and a standing ovation. Ramin Karimloo took his hand and bowed to him and sang "you alone can make our song take flight". A wonderful moment for the original Phantom.
thephantom1946 3 months ago 5
Said it before will say it again: on this the 25th anniversary of the opening night of this show at Her Majesty's Theater, London England----Michael Crawford was the true and only phantom.
He could have seduced a nun with a christmas carol.

Having seen "Phantom" more than 30 times - 8 of those in the very beginning with Michael Crawford - I can safely tell that NO ONE comes even vaguely close to touching Crawford's star and signature here. Webber wrote this role for him - virtually - and it shows. No matter what else anyone may think or say of Michael Crawford, he gave body and soul to the Phantom - a truly great show - even if it is now all "tourist'ed" out.
eavitale055 4 months ago 5
@eavitale055 I too, saw Crawford in this role several time, and I agree wholeheartedly with you. I also saw successors in the role, and as you say, no one really comes up to his breathtaking portrayal of the Phantom. Those of us who saw him were truly spoiled forever.

I'm sorry, but I don't like the way she sings. >.<
She's good, though! But I don't think her voice or singing style is fit for the girl's part compared to the movie. <:)
Good performance though!! :D
Ariott13121 5 months ago
@Ariott13121 Darling, I hate to break it to you but this role was written FOR Sarah Brightman's voice, thus it really has to suit her. It may not now, due to the maturation of the voice, but it's something you have to keep in mind when watching the originals. Christine's part was written and designed around Sarah and her talents.
itslauralove 4 months ago 3
Sara Brightman's voice is beautiful, but she's not all that pretty...... It makes me VERY happy that people recognized her for her talent and not her looks.
