One: the world owes more money to the U.S. than the U.S. owes to China, but they're not gonna pay it because the debt's as old (and as complicated) as WWII. International business invested in U.S. mortgages. This is bigger than Ivy Leagues, this is the world's economy. They threw down on mortgage-backed securities, even though nobody was really paying. A lot of poor people have received bullshit loans they couldn't pay back because banks were giving out loans left and right no matter what the cost. Why would they do that? U.S. banks were lying to themselves thinking things would get better if they just pretended they could pay up. (continued)
Now, you have normal people taking out loans they can't pay back to banks that have their fingers in their ears, making money off of investors that are desperate and blind trying to turn another buck off of the world. In a way, it's our fault. It's also the fault of banks that pretended we knew better. That's just housing, though. There are all sorts of issues that upset the U.S. budget. Drug wars? We pay for that, and it's a waste of money. Wars? We pay for those, and sometimes they're a waste.
The U.S. is still the big dog when it comes to military engagements. Nobody else wants to step up and take our place as a military force. Nobody. Not China, not the E.U, not anybody. Sometimes this works out. Sometimes it doesn't. In all honesty, now that we fucked up Iraq, we shouldn't be pulling out, even though it's a waste of our money, because we opened up a world of shit in that country and we have to see it through.
