@XZMDragon Nope, your RAM only contains data while your machine is powered on. You have to completely shut down your machine in order to swap out the RAM. Your data will normally be saved to your hard disk. Before doing this yourself you will want to understand well the difference between RAM and a hard disk though.
Still a good idea to perform a backup before you swap out the memory though just in case.
I switched out 2 512 modules with 2 new 1024 modules. everything seems okay. system rebooted just fine. I checked the "about this Mac", but the RAM is still listed as 1 GB. Does this mean that I didn't get both modules seated properly?
@odaward that's most likely the reason. Make sure the connectors on the edge of the memory sticks are clean before you reseat them; sometimes fingers can leave an oily residue that can cause a problem.
@glencadia If you remove the new memory will the machine boot? If yes, you may have bad memory, it may be the wrong type, you have a mismatched pair or it's not seated properly in the memory slot. You'll want to confirm that. If after removing the new memory (and replacing it with the older mem) you are still unable to get the machine to boot you may have shorted out the Mac, which likely will require a visit to an authorized service center.
Thank you -- now it works. I wasn't able to push one side in all the way because the level is broken -- the last person who owned the computer must have done this before. When the level was out, it didn't snap in. If I put the level back manually, it worked. I think that's what it was. Anyway, now it works. Thank you for your coment.
@dralison that being said, would two 4gb sticks allow me to run 8gb of ram. i need to run at least 4gb of ram for design software like adobe cs5... and i would like to have more than needed.
any info will be appreciated, thank you for your time.
@glencadia Did you check the compatibility? You can check the compatibility in the apple store. Just enter your model and it'll display a box with the specification. For instance. I have a 4th gen mac book and the compatibles memory ram are: 667MHz DDR2 (PC2-5300). Then enter to any page and double check the compatibility.
I wanted to upgrade my macbook 13.3 to 8gb ram ddr3, but I notice that the macbook runs on ddr 2 ram sticks... Does anyone know if it's possible to change the ddr2 for ddr3 ram sticks?
Nope, your hard drive isn't affected by this RAM upgrade unless you drop the machine while installing it. It's always prudent to have an external backup though. I recommend Western Digital's line of MyBook drives; cheap and they work great with Time Machine.
PS - the only silly question is the one not asked. Never be afraid task ask about something you're not sure of. Better safe than sorry!
Thanks that was awesome

@dralison ok what type of Ram did you get for ur mac
XZMDragon 1 year ago
@jayjaydeecreative your 1GB of memory is likely 2 512MB sticks. You'll need to replace them with 2 2GB sticks to get to 4GB.

watching your video, it seems very easy to change the ram on the macbook, if you know, how much memory it can mount up? 4Gb or 8Gb ?

I think I did it right but the computer won't boot or give me an error message. What happened? Anyone know?

@rbueno510 That generation MacBook is limited to 3gb or 4gb, depending on actual manufacturer date.
