...finally, an intelligent, SANE, compassionate approach to human pain, and addiction. This guy needs to be required study in every psych. and counselling course. Dr Maté understands suffering, and its origens, incredibly compassionate and perceptive - he also appears in Zeitgeist Moving Forward, talking about how it is environment which is the ultimate determinant of whether or not a gene is expressed (also ref. Dr. Bruce Lipton, The Biology of Belief).
My son Sean died at age 22 from his ADD medicine Ritalin that he became addicted to. I think my divorce hurt him, and his shame of this supid label ADD and later an addict were too much for him to bear, yet he went for help and we have nothing to do to help them except lie to them. Rehab is only good for 20-30% for 1 year. Please stay away from these addictive ADHD drugs. I think we need to do more research to save lives. Brain scans help. Google the Study on Ritalin by Dr Yong Kim of the NIDA.
In Holland we have been ding for years what dr. Mate is trying to do... Users are not procecuted , we focus on educating ppl rather than telling what not to do , long term addicts can get clean needles under supervision etc. Look up the statistics on drug related problems in Holland and tyne US...
People can be addicted to all sorts of behaviours not just those commonly thought or discussed, such as prescribed or illegal drugs alcohol and cigarettes. The often compulsive aberrant psychological behaviour patterns of many so called "normal" people cause just as much negative effects/affects on themselves and others.
Dr. Mate, continue to do the great job that you are doing with our First Nations people. They need someone like you to help them out of their despair. God Bless,
"There is no war on drugs, only a war on drug addicts, you can't war on inanimate objects" this is one of those beautiful quotes for the future. Could it be more true?
@MrPmj1979 who the fuck are you to tell someone how to choose their heroes?Bill Hicks made millions of us laugh while at the same time pointing out the hippocracy of our american society that still exist today. he new hew wasnt perfect and died of pancreatic cancer from years of cigarettes and alcohol and accepted it. what the Fuck have you Done???
@LOLMAN22 Its the same basic thing, orgasm and having fun playing video games both activate the reward center of your brain and release dopamine so you feel good, just like drugs. And then if somebody keeps doing these things even if they start to have bad consequences then that's the definition of addiction. The whole idea Mate is talking about is once we figure out who we are and what we want to do with our lives, and then do it, then you feel great normally and don't need the external stuff
Dr.Mate telling the absolutely truth and he's Hungarian native as proudly I am Hungarian too :) I'm looking for answers for many question in my life and slowly opening up the path front of me. I'm learning a few years now about the different being and my right intuition get more on surface it is proving it I FEEL I have had happened something with me in my earlly childhood. my very first memory is when I was 4years old and was violent between my parents... your intuition confirms your knowledge
Great interview..., thanks to Allan Gregg & his production team, and Gabor Mate is a courageous leader in his field..., I just wish we had more physicians like him, who cut through the BS, and tell the truth like it is. Thanks for posting this interview!!
So beautifully said. Thank you. I have listened to you on KPFK and I appreciate your compassion. I will look at some people including myself in a different way.
I agree with almost everything this man states. The one thing I am 100% sure that does NOT halt brain development is Heroin. Opiates simply don't prevent the brain from developing. Long term use may alter the brains chemistry, but not one single brain cell is destroyed from therapeutic doses of Heroin/Morphine. You can't just lump all of these drugs like Benzos, Alcohol, Cocaine, Amp's and Opiates into a single 'brain development-inhibitor subgroup' like that. Gabor must do more research.
This be the verse They fuck you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to ,but they do . They fill you with the faults they had And add some extra, just for you. But they were fucked up in thier turn By fools in old-style hats and coats, Who half the ime were soppy-stern And half at one anothers' throats . It deepens like a coastal shelf. Get out as early as you can, And dont have any kids yourself. Philip Larkin.

Go to 22:25. Q:: "Your patients don't see themselves as having an incurable disease, how do they see themselves? A: These ppl are deeply ashamed of themselves" ....and so on.... and more great wisdom...
Did you listen to yourself? You said there was no problem in the beginning. Tobacco, etc were used and not abused. It was widely available. There were no laws or govt agencies like you want.
So just let it be. End the prohibition and let govt. get the heck out of controlling individual behavior. You are wrong in your create a govt. agency conclusion. We do not need nor want your agency where YOU decide who gets what. Just let it be.
Did you listen yourself? Healthy people do not get addicted easily. By definition addicts continue their behavior even though it is harmfull to them. They need help to live the way they really want. Other people might need protection from negative effects. That is somewhat different from being a controlfreak.
It is a difficult guestion if and how 'harmfull' substances like sugar, tobacco, cocaine or arsenic should be controlled. War on addicts is not the best way.

Do you care enough, not to buy drugs?
know that, When you use drugs, an innocent child women or man is murdered or kidnapped,
young men or women are kidnapped to prostitution, raped by the drug cartels.
Do you care, when your high, are you really?
soon a drug dealer will knock on your door.
