Although Debbie Reynolds sings this perfectly, and it is my favorite version of "Tammy," I also really like the Lennon Sisters version. This is probably one of the greatest love songs I've ever heard. By the way, it is as old as I am.
Reminds me of the scene when Judy Garland in Meet Me In St.Louis when she sing The Boy Next Door right...... and has anybody else noticed a resemblance between Debbie Reynolds and pop star Katy Perry.
I too was named Tammie after this movie and this song! I even walked down the isle at my wedding to the instrumental of this song! It has so much meaning to me! I have sung it to all three of my children changing "does my lover feel what I feel" to "does my baby feel what I feel" so that it becomes a lullaby! It was/is a favorite for all three of my children!
On September 21, 1957, this was the #1 song in the USA. It is also the day that a beloved third cousin came into the world. Sadly, she left this world two days ago (12-22-2011). We will miss you, Fran.
@blairashley If that isn't enough, on Dec. 29, my cousin's ex-husband died while in surgery. He was only two years older than my third cousin. We'll miss you, too, Ricky.
this song reminds me of being a child. When i was a child i experienced the world as if it was a fairy tale and everything i saw was beautiful but now its all just regular and all i see is death and sadness. aging is like a your favorite fairytale turning into the newspaper and the print just gets smaller and smaller until you cant read anymore. I miss the old days...
When I was 15 I went to see a movie called Kiss Me In the Catskills. It was pretty bad, but I fell in love with a young new actress called Debbie Reynolds. She was a most beautiful young woman and I knew instantly that she would become a superstar. How's that for a 15-year-old? And by the way, I love this song.
My entire conception of romantic loved was derived (as it the case today) at my first screening of Tammy and the Bachelor, in 1957. My love for Debbie Reynolds (even at the tender age of 7) may have been unrequited in a physical sense, but was certainly not so in a spiritual sense. For me, 'Tammy's in Love' remains one of the most influential songs in the canon of music that has informed my life.
Thank you memaw for dancing around the room with me to my song. I now dance with my granddaughter, as her memaw, to this same song, and always think of you. RIP! I know madysen will remember me someday, with a warm heart and a smile too!
:) This movie is where my parents got my name from. It was way before my time but I love it!! Everytime I got a crush at school, my mom would sing me this song. lol.
I recall this song , many years ago the maid, Richa, would tuck me in to bed late at night. The radio would play it at 8:30pm. Father was away to the old country, and mother was out with Uncle Ferdie. What peace in gave me and Richa. God bless Debbie Boone. She is a great actress.

@stesca1 The type of person who wished that the world was like the earlier days, when kids had respect for their elders & not groping or shanking their fellow man!
This is for my mama, she introduced me to the classic songs when I was young. She used to tell me when she was young her friends used to call her "Tammy" from the song. Love you mama, see you soon can't wait to have you here. :)
Vimit Gsasa, which means I love this song! IN CAPS: stupid deaf fucker, no offense. (I thinks she's singing: "Jenny, Jenny." But that's becaused her girlfriendf is named Tammy–either that or she' fuckin' neurotic, to the max!!Or she has more than one girlfriend, who likes to meet her in "Pete's Tomatoes"-we all know what THAT means!
I've always loved this song. What a fantastic voice Debbie had. It is great to finally see her in the movie where the song came from! She is such a magical entertainer and still going strong!
This scene and this piece was the inspiration for the song Hopelessly Devoted to You from the movie Grease. I know you already knew, just thought I'd throw it in.
This was the first film that I can recall ever seeing, probably aged four or five and am now sixty in a few days time. I can recall being awstruck as you can imagine, having not even seen a tv before.
The song Tammy has always stayed in my mind as did the scene shot on what I seem to recall was a lake, if anyone could please jog my memory.
I should see if it's avalable on dvd some place. :)
@lesmals she lived on a house across a river. a plane crashed (leslie neilson) so she goes to find him in the when he eventually leaves the lake home. it is available on dvd. a great little movie.
Everyone I have seen on old songs that are still good, comment that they don't like any new songs. Good job, but what can we do to fix it. People like what is terrible...This is beautiful.
You know the 50s was not dull. I was born in 47 and I lived through those years. There was a large variety of music. This song fit the movie concerning a country girl. She wouldn't be singing something more sophisticated. It wouldn't have been in character. Debbie Reynolds was a famous singer/dancer. Watch Singing in the Rain and many others. She is the Mother of the lady who played Princess Leia in Star Wars. (Carrie Fisher)
Everything you say re 50s is accurate, MarlenB, but the rock-pop youth revolution was still awaiting the arrival of the last soldiers: the rebellious writers, artists and musicians such as the Beatles & Bob D. In the 50s order was kept by unspoken reference to the recently completed terrible world war and the prospect of an even worse one. The lid was being held down on society tightly.
This is a surprisingly good song for the notoriously dull 1950s: stunning chord progressions with discreet, flawless orchestration and well sung with ever-sosubtle yodel overtones. As for the words, some good plays & a less-contrived-than-usual use of love-dove. Side-point: is that maid's cat a corpse?
@Kinokiddo I was born in the 40's,grew up in the 50's,and I disagree that the 50's were dull. It was a simpler time, when people had manners, morals, and when children ran free. We also saw the birth of rock & roll, the emergence of black music & had a darn good time without drink & drugs. If I could go back in time, the 50's would be the era I'd choose.
skyangel. I feel the same way to..Wish those good old days would come back ,because I would never come back to 2days time either. those were the good old days.
Just love her, but sadly she's far too old for me.
How can you get better songs than this? They just have no emotions in them these days. I saw Debbie sing this here in England last year, and she still has the voice and the personality. She's always been a real gem xxx
I am happy I grew up in the 50's and 60's when things like faith, family, nature, your country ment something, if that's chesse I will take it every time, today people from rual areas are shown as Larry the cable guy, and other insults, I will take Debbie Reynolds any day to the untalented, filthy acting trash talking females today in film, music.
Oddly enough, I watched the movie before I heard the song, and I wasn't sure if I had wanted to watch the movie at the time, but then my step-dad suggest I watched it. I must say that it's an amazing movie and if I acctually owned it I'd be watching it at least twice a week, even if it is a bit of a cheese fest, and this is my absolute favorite song, with the star trek theme song comming in a close second.
3:00 video: 1957 song "Tammy," music by Jay Livingston and lyrics by Ray Evans; sung by and 1957 #1 hit for Debbie Reynolds; born Mary Frances Reynolds on April 1, 1932, in El Paso, Texas.
I, an incurable romantic, saw this movie at the Teatro Colon in Santiago, Dom. Rep in the 50's. Who of my fellow teenagers of that era didn't identify with Tammy? They don't make movies like this any more.
I have loved her ever since I was little because she did the voice of Charlotte on "Charlotte's Web," and I used to be obsessed with that as a kid. This song is really nice.
This is the kind of beautiful innocent world, where people say "Muslim Suicide Bomber, stoning women?? Never heard of that," in which I want to live and love.
Are there any posts of her singing Bye Bye Blackbird from What's the Matter with Helen? One of the actresses in that movie, Peggy Rea, has passed away. We will miss you, Peggy.
This is one of my favorite songs as well. Debbie's voice is so incredible. I listen to it over and over when I find recordings of it. It is great to hear the second verse. Such a descriptive song. Great post!
can anyone answer this question......why did so many people back then look so much older than they really were ? not just movies, old photos too. no way would i think she was a teenager or even a little more here. i am not comparing this with, say the original 90210 series when only one actress was actually a teenager. they just looked wayyyyyyyyyyy older before the 1970's
the voices are not modified in a studio, you can hear the natural power of the singer, every perfect note, and every little slip-up, this is called real singing.
Billboard's 24th #1 hit of the rock era. Accordin' to the book, 'the Top 10', under her real name of Mary Frances, Debbie played French Horn in school. Would've loved to see her do that, right, gang? God bless!
HAPPY NEW YEARS EVERYONE HERE 2011!!!!!!! Now to watch my Tammy movies, its been a few months now, and remember how great things used to be in an era long gone and how great it was to be an American then
I was born in the 50's and my mother used to play this on the piano. Doris Day was always a favourite in my family, even my children love all her films
This is a lovely version of this song, but in my view, Connie Francis' version is Classic :)

@90sComputerGames: you are so right, The beauty of these movies was that they were both entertaining and fun family films to watch.

If only Hollywood knew how many hearts would melt if they brought phenomenal talent like this back.

This is one of my favorite songs as well. Debbie's voice is so incredible. I listen to it over and over when I find recordings of it. It is great to hear the second verse. Such a descriptive song. Great post!

It would be great to go back to the good old days, but we can't. But what we can do is bring the things the things we love along with us.

can anyone answer this question......why did so many people back then look so much older than they really were ? not just movies, old photos too. no way would i think she was a teenager or even a little more here. i am not comparing this with, say the original 90210 series when only one actress was actually a teenager. they just looked wayyyyyyyyyyy older before the 1970's
morgankitty1 1 year ago
the voices are not modified in a studio, you can hear the natural power of the singer, every perfect note, and every little slip-up, this is called real singing.

Billboard's 24th #1 hit of the rock era. Accordin' to the book, 'the Top 10', under her real name of Mary Frances, Debbie played French Horn in school. Would've loved to see her do that, right, gang? God bless!
