Yeah, in the 60s, there wasn't an automatic transmission like today, there were operators, who switched you to your wished telephone number. So he had to say "Get me Glasgow".

Actually, with all due respect to Chuck McCann (another brilliant character actor -- check him out in "The Projectionist") I don't think that's him. I suspect it's the guy who was in the short-lived US version of "Porridge", called "On the Rocks" -- Rick Hurst?
