Gloves are to protect the hands mainly, its safer to the head to fight without gloves as punches will tend to not be as hard, the fighter wont want to break there knuckles on the others head... with gloves there is more chance of trauma to the head, but bare knuckles produces more cuts so it looks worse, but isnt.

Forrest Griffin was paid 100G to fight anderson silva, and he boasted like that was amazing. Mike Tyson was paid 44M to fight lewis.. Pacquiao v Hatton was 38M a piece. UFC competitors arent doing as great as you think.
