That, phenomenon It's call Hydroplaning, and occurs normally on cars when you go at a very high speed and pass over some kind of water body on the road, it creates a membrane between the asphalt and the tire so you theoretically you are not longer on the road, so what those planes are doing it's something like that but with a enormous risk cuz they cannot fail in how deep they go with the tires in the water cuz they will crash right away.
Ok... I habve seen the video before. I have two T-6's as well and after all the time blood sweat and tears it takes to restore them...... what i can say about this video is great wow fantastic and my blood would have been pumping and wow great wild fun seeker adrenalin pumping fun...... But it's been done..... Doesn't need to ever be done again. I also have had a Navion for 15 years. Does great rolls on You Tube. But I still have never done it. I am a UAL pilot and that doesn't make me smarter.
I love this video it bring a tear to my eyes, after restoring two AT-6's it means a lot to me to see these guys fly them across the lake like that. I wouldn't mind doing that maybe once.
GyroAshleyV This video was shot here in south Africa on the Vaal Dam. The leader of this pack is Capt Scully Levine. He has been flying for some 40 years and is a captain on the boeings for the South African Airways. He also does a trick where he lands a cubby on the back of a moving truck.
I attended a dinner award ceremony last Saturday, and heard that this pilot has retired from active service in the SAA at the age of 63, but will still be doing aerobatic shows. This is great flying

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but with the water surface tension at the speeds they're flying so strong, Would it be almost like a full speed touch and go down concrete?
If they slow down enough, the water will take over, and the plane nosedives.
you are right..int hose speed atom density of water became more compact, almost like concrete. But you have to remain enough speed, otherwise it will make a ditch and you spin over the nose.
should be doable, although i'm sure having the main gear right under your cockpit helps as opposed to being under the middle of the plane like in a larger airliner.
Whoever posted this video was very kind in sharing this with us. I would kindly suggest though that the video was misnamed. The group did not try to land on a runway... it was a lake... so lake skiing or lake skimming would have been more on target. Why not be a bit more precise in the lable description? Lets not be precise on one hand (the flying) and imprecise in its description / lable.
It isn't stupid, it's physics. At the speed their flying, all they are doing is hydro-planning. Mind you it is still some pretty good flying, but the water is actually holding the wheels on the surface. (The wings are holding the planes.)
Pretty damn cool if you ask me. I know you didn't.
Ah...pretty stupid. Too cheap to pay a kid to wash the wheel wells? Sure it's a stunning visual..but why? Ever see an amphib floatplane touchdown on water with it's wheels out? These guy's a nose itch from flipping over on their nose. I just hate to see classic airframes lost because of poor judgement. Sure it takes skill to do that, but even more judgement to leave it out of the act. IMAO
Nice ! Btw, Subbed sub back please ! :)

That would be awesome if you could fly a large airliner across the water. :)

I guess the old saying "You can only tie the record for flying low" does not apply for these guys.

talk about 'attitude control' these guys are GOOD! To hold an altitude +/- .5 inch, while compensating for drag, shows great talent.
