@HellaFlushEvo No, because it was designed to use an operating rod from the get go... so no carrier tilt issues. AR type guns were designed to use Direct Gas, so they do get tilt issues if done poorly.
I don't mean to be a smart alec, but I don't think the SIG 556 classifies as a "battle rifle". Battle rifles are rifles chambered for larger rounds than 5.56 (or .223). A better term used for this video would be combat rifle.
Guys, the gas system with the adjustable gas plug is more inline with an FAL. The first time I saw this taken apart my first thought was that they stole the idea from my STG58 or G1 FAL. Outside being fluted it functions in the same manner. But unlike the FAL they combined the recoil spring in with it. The FAL gas piston just has a double return spring. Was waiting to see if they would come up with a left hand charging handle before buying.
do u still feel this rifle is the best you can buy as a civilan... cuz sig just came out with there 516 and i am thinking of useing my tax check to get either a 516, a 556, or a stg e4. one thing i have heard bad aboot the 556 is there folding stock theres an issue with it pulling out the thing that retains it. am just curious ur .02 before i spend 1500ish lol. seeing how u know someone that has one and work at a firearms store.
@hazeleyestud like Hazel said, down. The gas enters the gas block from the barrel, which means the gas has to go up into the piston system. The holes face down to match this.
Now, which model has the buffer tube assembly already installed? I'm TOTALLY unfamiliar with the SIG 556 but it seems like I would want want to get one of these as opposed to an AR (Which sucks because I already have an upper on the way). I've seen a lot of pictures online where people have installed magpul UBR's and I just don't know how you can pull that off with the folding stock.
@CasperInkyMagoo Operating rods flex during firing. You either know that, or have you never really fired a lot of rifles. The Sig's rod is quite "beefy" and made to be more ridged... so it doesn't flex. This improves consistency and as a result accuracy. What part of this don't you understand?
@MadOgre exactly, the Sig's piston rod is so much more than the little systems you see on the DI conversions or new builds...once again refer to the AK to see where they got this from. In some things, you want less...in this it's the same idea of racing engines and the connecting rods they use, they are not going with tiny, weak connectors.
@MadOgre So let me ask you this.. Why didn't Sig USA go with a solid op rod instead of the fluted design like the original San Swiss 551 that it was designed often? If it's the "best battle rifle" then why does it destroy all the spent shell casing that it ejects to where you can reuse the casing to reload? Just asking....
@SINBAD396 I've seen a lot of fluted op rods in newer SIG 551 types. As far has damaging brass, so do FN FAL's (At least the last two I owned did), CETME and HK G3/91 type rifles do too. Are you going to tell me those rifles are second rate?
@MadOgre Fluted op rod in a San Swiss 551 rifles? Are you sure? We're not talking about the 556 here. Keep in mind I was the Special Weapons Coordinator at Sig and no one knows that rifle in the states better than I. My comment was based on the comment that the 556 was one of the best battle rifle out there. The 551/550/552 would fall under that claim. Not the Exeter version 556. It is a poor copy of the San Swiss design. I never claimed the fluted equaled 2nd rate.
@SINBAD396 I may be incorrect... I will admit that. But they were Swiss rifles. I didn't look further or ask questions. I was more concerned with with teaching the guys how to run the guns.
@MadOgre No worries. I didn't mean to come off like a hard ass with my comments. I was there when the 556 was developed and IMHO, the end result is in no way close to the original Swiss quality. I fought tooth and nail on several quality issue and lost every fight.
I had a 556 with all Swiss internal parts including the lower and I still sold it. I just couldn't keep it. I carried a 551 for 3 years and "that" was a true battle rifle.
@SINBAD396 I can see that was a tough fight... I understand that SIG really dropped a lot of their Quality Control efforts all together. Rifles and Pistols. Which is a huge shame. On top of that, they are putting their good name on cheap plastic chinese made crap. Whoring their name out like Winchester did... soon the name will be meaningless too.
Has this rifle been shot that much? Mine has around 500 rounds through it and my piston is definitely never going to shine/look that clean ever again. I need to find a good way to get the gunk off of it, my hoppes cleaner/solvent isn't doing the job.
I think I'm dropping my AR in favor of the Sig 556 patrol version for under 1G, shipping included. I wish I could decide if I should keep my sgl-31 or not. I absolutely *love* the ballistics of 5.45 and how devilish it is.
@Boogiethrash Sig Arms was purchased by Sig Sauer, I think it had something to do with the US manufacture of the rifle and the name they were under, regardless it is the same company, same plant in New Hampshire and same warranty.
I just handled one of these at the gun shop and I was not impressed with that pencil thin barrel. The new mini 14 has a thicker barrel!! Sig? Why?????? It has to affect accuracy.
@whitedogfive Thickness of the barrel as nothing to do with the Quality of the barrel. Especially when the SIG is hammer forged and the Ruger's is... well... it's just not that great. I'll leave it at that.
I just started looking at SIG for my next rifle, and would have to say that Whitedogfive does have a valid concern when it comes to heat and effect on barrel. My Bushmaster AR has an HBAR 16" and met a guy at the range with a lightweight M4 barrel; he said after 4-5 30rd mags his accuracy decreases noticeably. I've shot 240 rds in a 45min session with no noticeable effect (note both of us use the iron sigthts, no optics). Does the SIG have a history of being affected this way?
@MadOgre I'm up to well over 2000 through mine...Only get to fire it when I'm not in Europe of working in the desert (let you guess on that one) no misfires, even put a box of Wolf through it just to see how it handles the steel shells. No problems, no FTFs...this rifle even punched rounds that an AR was FTFing due to the firing pin being off. This rifle, my friends is the absolute best you can buy as a 'civilian'.
@whitedogfive Almost all barrels are cold hammer forged...unless you are looking for a button forged barrel from a target barrel maker...quite unrealistic for the most part.
Sig does not chrome line their barrel, but they do a process called nitro-carburizing. It treats the entire piece of the barrel, not just lines it with chrome.
@Thewestcoastshooter I love how real gun owners point out that it isn't airsoft, while airsoft owners don't point out that it isn't a real gun. How ass backwards is that?

I am very interested in swapping out my AR15 M4gery for a SIG. I have AK's as well and like the reliability and simplicity of this style. The M4's dainty and dirty parts are a pain to keep clean and you always have to worry about the bolt eventually cracking, etc. However, I have a 16" bbl with flip up sights and RIFLE length free float tube and it still only weighs 7.5 lbs full of Magpul rail covers. This rifle, according to Sig, is 1.1 lbs heavier and nose heavier? Can you weigh one for us?
God bless Sigarms for that - I love it! Unfortunately its problematic to buy Sig 556 in Russia. I think i'll try to order it in US when my license will be opened for this type of weapon.
Nice talk about the piston, and nice SIG. As far as the SIG, the only bad things I have seen on these are the fold out stock issue (where it locks to the side of the receiver) the factory SIG mags being loose and yes the rear flip sight. I upgraded the rail and sights with Troy and an ACOG. Might buy a second one, tell my wife it's for her. lol
We've had the semi-auto only version of the Sig 550 in Canada for years now. Swissarms calls it the PE90. It would have been nice if they took AR mags. Super reliable and accurate guns. One thing to add to your vid is the 2 position gas valve. It has a small orifice and a larger orifice. In combat after mega rounds the gun may slow its rate of fire. Just click the valve to the large port and keep fighting. But only use the large port for emergency. It will cycle the bolt harder than normal.

@free2game Mags are okay...nothing to brag about. I would just get some AR mags (surplus) or PMAGs from MagPul which work the best. The iron sights were not bad, but I put my SIG in the Troy Battle Rail and added the Troy flip sights which are insane. I would say the best iron sight set up for a 5.56 NATO rifle is still probably the M4/M16. - one thing, the SIG 550/551/552 all have the HK style rotary diopter rear sight which is pretty decent, that can be added to the 556 as a mounted part.
Nah, they were both pretty terrible. That's why SIG packages their new rifles with outsourced regular aluminum mags with magpul followers and diopter sights.

Ive heard that piston weapons cant be as accurate as direct imp. rifles because of not letting the barrel vibrate like a free float though less messy and likely to jam. I have pretty much 0 experience with piston guns though i would like one at somepoint. any thoughts or knowledge about this id appreciate it.
Google Up the HK PSG-1, and the M-21 Sniper Rifles. Op-Rod guns CAN be very accurate. The Ruger SR-556 is an accurate AR and it uses an Op-Rod. The SIG 556 DMR is shockingly accurate, it too has an Op-Rod.
true all great gas piston weapons known for accuracy i guess im just asking what the advantage is of a direct impingement if any is over a rod gun. Or maybe the more freefloating barrel idea is not significant enough. The more I learn about rod guns the more i wish i had one and wonder why they(government) picked a tube gas system for the m16.
pretty much..except an Ak is always at least one, perhaps a couple hundred cheaper than an AR..but certainly not as accurate. So do you have any complaints about the magazines for this Sig?..could you say, run them through an AR?
I'm sorry to hear you don't like them, but thanks for the heads-up.. I thought the whole clamp them together was cool, but apparently they're garbage.
@MadOgre There two tangible advantages: 1. Lighter weight. It matters when you've been carrying your carbine at the high-ready for 8 hours. 2. Fewer parts. Don't underestimate simplicity.
I own several of both. I love my 556's, but my goto gun is still a quality DI gun.
The weight between some Piston AR's and Direct Gas AR's - negligible. 8 Years in the Infantry, I know all about weight. But in this, it is a non-issue.
Are you trying to say the SIG is more complicated than the AR? The SIG's gas system is caveman simple.
Complex? Heck no, but I don't think there's a simpler system than the AR's DI.
We have to agree to disagree about weight. Every bit of weight removed helps, brother, and my beef with the SIG is not the overall weight, but the fact that it is rather nose heavy--just like a Gucci'd up M4
I love my Sigs, but my personal cost-benefit analysis tips me towards my AR. The AR has one SIGnificant advantage over the AR, though. The 556's extractor is tits; the AR's is shit.
i love sig weapons i would buy one over a ar anyday. i know they have conversion kits out there. However, in my opion an ar was never meant to be a piston gun, and there fore will never run as good as a true piston gun. Built as such from the ground up. I noticed sigs with there mags apper different from other ar mags. do sig 556s work with stang mags???
I bought mine in mid April, have a new 3x30 Acog with the amber chevron on it, and have over 1000 rounds thru it. I have mixed ammo in the mag and the gun eats everything, reloads, 55gr to 70 gr, ...... easy to clean...
Ive got a 556 Classic SWAT and just got a Bushnell Elite 3200 for it. I was wondering if those were Burris Xtreme Tactical rings and the 1 inch (x high) ones? Im wondering if I should get 3/4 or 1 inch tall.... Thanks!
That would be sweet if ammo was widely available. It isn't because of license issues with Alexander Arms.... this is why 6.8SPC is going to win contracts and it's already much more available. I do like the 6.5 cartridge, a lot... I think it would be the better round for the Military between the two because it's easier to hit with at range. But 6.8 is going to win it.
If we would have adopted the British .280 back in the 1950s we wouldin't have had problems like we do with the 5.56 today. But the next cartridge we adopt should be able to replace both the 5.56x45 and
7.62x51, if not then there's no point of getting a replacement then. I don't think the 6.8 is capable replacement for both rounds, the 6.5 grendel might be.
I can't wait to buy mine. I want to go to the shooting range and sit right next to the "AK" guys so they can see my groups. Shotgun news did a test of a SIG 556 and it shot better as the bullet weight went up. 75gr and 77gr were right at 1" for 5 shots at 100 yards.
Most cleaning time is spend on the bolt and carrier - and by most - I mean like about 1 minute. No, they don't get very dirty... you have to shoot a whole lot to get it real dirty.
You are almost right. It also has to do with consistency and if the forces affecting the barrel are inconsistent, the barrel will yield inconsistent results. This is why bedding is so important. For example, the best barrel in the world will not perform if its not bedded - or free floated which is a ghetto way of getting consistency. The SIG's thin barrel isn't a problem because everything around it is consistent.
Wow. Barrels arent bedded-EVER. Actions are bedded. Your statement here makes my brain hurt. I love how you call the cylinder "another rod"...do some homework, bro!
That being said, most people don't know how to run ARs. They like to run wet, run them wet and theyre very reliable. I will give you that overall, the Sig will probably have better reliability.
does the sig556 have carrier tilt? thanks
HellaFlushEvo 3 months ago
@HellaFlushEvo No, because it was designed to use an operating rod from the get go... so no carrier tilt issues. AR type guns were designed to use Direct Gas, so they do get tilt issues if done poorly.

I heard the only weak things about them are the mags and the backup sights, how are they?
free2game 2 years ago
@free2game Mags are okay...nothing to brag about. I would just get some AR mags (surplus) or PMAGs from MagPul which work the best. The iron sights were not bad, but I put my SIG in the Troy Battle Rail and added the Troy flip sights which are insane. I would say the best iron sight set up for a 5.56 NATO rifle is still probably the M4/M16. - one thing, the SIG 550/551/552 all have the HK style rotary diopter rear sight which is pretty decent, that can be added to the 556 as a mounted part.
fuzzypumpkinfucker 1 year ago
@fuzzypumpkinfucker
Nah, they were both pretty terrible. That's why SIG packages their new rifles with outsourced regular aluminum mags with magpul followers and diopter sights.

beautiful, gorgeous, i love that rifle.
Rico8458 2 years ago
Ive heard that piston weapons cant be as accurate as direct imp. rifles because of not letting the barrel vibrate like a free float though less messy and likely to jam. I have pretty much 0 experience with piston guns though i would like one at somepoint. any thoughts or knowledge about this id appreciate it.
texian91 2 years ago
Google Up the HK PSG-1, and the M-21 Sniper Rifles. Op-Rod guns CAN be very accurate. The Ruger SR-556 is an accurate AR and it uses an Op-Rod. The SIG 556 DMR is shockingly accurate, it too has an Op-Rod.
MadOgre 2 years ago
true all great gas piston weapons known for accuracy i guess im just asking what the advantage is of a direct impingement if any is over a rod gun. Or maybe the more freefloating barrel idea is not significant enough. The more I learn about rod guns the more i wish i had one and wonder why they(government) picked a tube gas system for the m16.
texian91 2 years ago
There is no real tangible advantages to direct gas. It's just a simple way of making the gun work.
MadOgre 2 years ago
cheaper without piston..and less moving parts..at the cost of durability though
gmanflyairforce3 2 years ago
So in essence, "You get what you pay for".
MadOgre 2 years ago
pretty much..except an Ak is always at least one, perhaps a couple hundred cheaper than an AR..but certainly not as accurate. So do you have any complaints about the magazines for this Sig?..could you say, run them through an AR?
gmanflyairforce3 2 years ago
I hate the factory SIG mags. Dump them and get the MagPul Pmags.
MadOgre 2 years ago
I'm sorry to hear you don't like them, but thanks for the heads-up.. I thought the whole clamp them together was cool, but apparently they're garbage.
gmanflyairforce3 2 years ago
between a Sig 556 and an AR15, which is more accurate? which can you reload faster?..and which one can correct a malfunction faster?
gmanflyairforce3 2 years ago
The AR shoots tighter groups.
Reloads are faster in neither - that's sixes.
Clearing Jams? I've never had a jam in my 556... but it's sixes there too... if you don't count the never jamming.
MadOgre 2 years ago
@MadOgre There two tangible advantages: 1. Lighter weight. It matters when you've been carrying your carbine at the high-ready for 8 hours. 2. Fewer parts. Don't underestimate simplicity.
I own several of both. I love my 556's, but my goto gun is still a quality DI gun.
lkjhgfddddddddddsamn 2 years ago
The weight between some Piston AR's and Direct Gas AR's - negligible. 8 Years in the Infantry, I know all about weight. But in this, it is a non-issue.
Are you trying to say the SIG is more complicated than the AR? The SIG's gas system is caveman simple.
MadOgre 2 years ago
Follow Me, Brother.

i love sig weapons i would buy one over a ar anyday. i know they have conversion kits out there. However, in my opion an ar was never meant to be a piston gun, and there fore will never run as good as a true piston gun. Built as such from the ground up. I noticed sigs with there mags apper different from other ar mags. do sig 556s work with stang mags???

Standard USGI type mags... MagPul Pmags... you bet.

Thanks!
mikejuliestl 2 years ago
I think they are. Not 100% sure, because this one isn't my SIG. My SIG is rolling a red dot.
MadOgre 2 years ago
Maybe if they lightened it and made it fire a bigger bullet then you would have the perfect rifle.
esh325 2 years ago
You mean like putting on the SIG 556 Classic forearm and have it chambered in 6.8?
I think caliber conversions will be coming out next year from 3rd parties.
MadOgre 2 years ago
Yeah, preferably 6.5 grendel.
esh325 2 years ago
That would be sweet if ammo was widely available. It isn't because of license issues with Alexander Arms.... this is why 6.8SPC is going to win contracts and it's already much more available. I do like the 6.5 cartridge, a lot... I think it would be the better round for the Military between the two because it's easier to hit with at range. But 6.8 is going to win it.
MadOgre 2 years ago
If we would have adopted the British .280 back in the 1950s we wouldin't have had problems like we do with the 5.56 today. But the next cartridge we adopt should be able to replace both the 5.56x45 and
7.62x51, if not then there's no point of getting a replacement then. I don't think the 6.8 is capable replacement for both rounds, the 6.5 grendel might be.
esh325 2 years ago
Gas piston is proven reliable. But i much rather have a lighter weight M-16 if i'm carrying it around.
mahnameiswin 2 years ago
I can't wait to buy mine. I want to go to the shooting range and sit right next to the "AK" guys so they can see my groups. Shotgun news did a test of a SIG 556 and it shot better as the bullet weight went up. 75gr and 77gr were right at 1" for 5 shots at 100 yards.
ferret6677 2 years ago
Does the bolt and Chamber get really dirty? Where is most of the cleaning time?
ferret6677 2 years ago
Most cleaning time is spend on the bolt and carrier - and by most - I mean like about 1 minute. No, they don't get very dirty... you have to shoot a whole lot to get it real dirty.
MadOgre 2 years ago
The flex of the gas piston has nothing to do with the accuracy. It's the flex of the barrel. The sig 556 has a pencil thin barrel.
1989JCH 2 years ago
You are almost right. It also has to do with consistency and if the forces affecting the barrel are inconsistent, the barrel will yield inconsistent results. This is why bedding is so important. For example, the best barrel in the world will not perform if its not bedded - or free floated which is a ghetto way of getting consistency. The SIG's thin barrel isn't a problem because everything around it is consistent.
MadOgre 2 years ago
Wow. Barrels arent bedded-EVER. Actions are bedded. Your statement here makes my brain hurt. I love how you call the cylinder "another rod"...do some homework, bro!
brrrrtttttttt 2 years ago
Yeah, sometimes they are. Sometimes, they are bedded all the way to the muzzle.
MadOgre 2 years ago
I like the new classic 556 SWAT. That being said, I could build 2 quality (LMT) ARs for the price of one.

The SWAT has a completely different lower... one of the reasons that price went up.
We sell them for $1839.99

Sounds good, I would love to see one in 6.8 or .308. We will see how Sig answers that question.

Looks great!
maskedhobo 2 years ago
It's better than just Looks. I taught a tactical carbine course today and one of my students used my SIG 556...
100% reliability, the gun never jammed.
Which is too bad, because he didnt get to practice malfunction drills like other students.
MadOgre 2 years ago
That being said, most people don't know how to run ARs. They like to run wet, run them wet and theyre very reliable. I will give you that overall, the Sig will probably have better reliability.
