You are right.. Singapore Airlines have had some of the longest routes of any airline! I think they might have flown record long flights a couple of times.. Have not flown Singapore yet but can't wait for the opportunity.. an excellent airline I hear! Thanks for the view and comment!

Yeah. Been flying with Etihad Airways mostly on A346s. The takeoffs are long, aren't they? They just keep going and going and going until it eventually gently lifts off, almost overrunning the runway. Nice vid!

@cesar333 The A340 has been described as a tanker carrying a lot of fuel plus a few passengers. It's been essentially made obsolete by the 777's fuel economy and greater capacity. Although it is externally a beautiful airplane, internally, as an engineering problem, it is a hopeless piece of junk, inefficient, hard to fly, bloated, stupid.

It is amazing! super long flight but was very enjoyable.. I travel across the pacific all the time and never had a ride this comfortable! Qatar Airways now offers direct service from Doha to Houston, TX which is even longer than Washington, DC!! 16 hours 5 minutes "official" flight time on Boeing 777-200LR!!

It is powered by the Trent 500 which is rated for 56,000 lb.

Trent 800 which goes on Boeing 777 has max thrust of 95,000 lb and is Rolls-Royce's highest thrust engine.

This video was a reduced-thrust take-off so engines were not running max thrust. Doha International has a very long runway..

How did you know the takeoff power was flexed?

From your posting date is around the same time as filming date, it is summer, and the heat kills the performance of the planes, hence the long runways out here.

The video was actually taken around winter time (Dec 31) but, you are right, it is hot almost all the time in Qatar. Reduced thrust was very obvious and is common standard procedure for the fully-powered A340-500 and A340-600.

Thats a common mistake being made. To safe fuel its better to run the engines at, lets say, 70% of power and using all of the runway. The A346 and A345 have no problem taking off as fast as a B747. The A343 then again. Yes, they need more runway. Why waste 1000 ft of runway if you can use it?

Other thing is climbing rate. Climbing rate is often restricted by the ATC and that determines how fast or slow a plane has to climb.

these days the 777's are preferred because of fuel economy... the 200LR's have awesome fuel economy and since its only 2 engines it uses much less fuel than 340's

A340-500 and A340-600 are both very long range aircrafts but the 777-200LR has longest range. The Airbus -500 beats the Boeing -300 but 777-200LR is longest (with smaller payload/passenger capacity)

A340-600 : 14,600 km (7,900 nautical miles)

Boeing 777-200LR: 17,395 km (9,395 nautical miles)

that's a long flight! I'm going on Qatar Airways to Doha then onto Colombo in a few weeks time. LDN to Doha will be the A340 but then Doha to CMB will be an A330 and of course am a bit nervous knowing that the Air France aircraft that went down was an A330 too...

This was reduced thrust take off.. Like I said in earlier comments Doha has one of the longest comercial airport runways in the world. Pitch at take-off is low to avoid tail strike; A340-600 is the longest plane in the world. Climb rate is typical of a wide body heavy weight. I like the A340

'Tis not! That particular title is owned by the Antonov AN-225 Mriya, a commercial cargo aircraft and current the largest aircraft in the world. For the moment, the A346 holds title as the longest commercial PASSENGER aircraft in service ... however, that will only be until for Boeing's 747-8i and then much later the Airbus A380-900 come into service.

Everyone.. Doha has the longest runway in the Middle East and this was reduced-thrust take-off. Almost all planes landing in Doha do not even use thrust reversers due to the very long runway.

Qatar has got A340-600HGW (Heavy Gross Weight). They are equiped with Trent 500 i think. But anyway, sounds great!

Correct... Trent 500 is the sole engine for A340-500 and A340-600. Trent 700 powers the A330. Tent 800 powers the Boeing 777. Trent 900 powers the A380. Finally Trent 1000 powers the Boeing 787. There is no Trent 600 that I know of!

I think it was reduced thrust; engine sounds very quite. It seems pretty typical on the A340 especially the -500 and -600. The plane was pretty light, there only few people in business class!

Thanks guys! I personally worked on the design of the nose landing gear of this plane (the -600 version). This was QR51 from Doha to Washington DC.. Departed ~noon time Dec 30, 2007. Unfortunately, I don't have landing; I was sleeping after the 15 hour flight. I do have landing into Doha from Manila on Airbus 330, I will post video later.
