  • Motown Calls :)

  • The swiss man who thought up the idea for Eurovision,in 1952,didnt want an American cultural invasion. It was supposed to be the European countries continuing their culture in song. Here we have a second rate vocalist with 2 girls miming(and other vocalists behind the screen, supposedly cause one was pregnant), doing a 60s style,Supremes knock-off.The Luxembourgians were probably booing because they thought it was a pack of unoriginal garbage. It totally sucks!!!

  • For me the best songs are United Kingdom, France, Spain, Netherlands and Denmark

  • LOVE IT!!!

And reg clothes, hair, etc.. look at what´s popular now... The same!!!

  • The Supremes? Who were they?

  • Look at Kit as the lead singer of Vega with the single "Mother Egypt". Did very well in Europe, Japan & Australia. You can find this video on my channel GiseleMusic. Hope you enjoy...

  • i remember watching this in apr/may 1984 when i was 12yrs old and i remember them being absolutely terrible;but ive just watched this again and apart from whoever dressed them should be shot, its actually quite good! fair enough,it is very like the supremes but it holds its own.they didnt deserve to get booed;and if comments below are to be believed, they shouldnt have been used as scapegoats for football hooliganism.

  • At 3:49 until the end of the song do the Luxembourgians have no respect booing like that

  • @EuroBoy1994 i dont understand the booing thing? what was going on at the time?

  • @pimmagrimm apparintly it was over English fan wrecking Luxembourg at a football match a few months earlier

  • Did the audience really boo them?

It sounds like a boo to me...

    GREAT SONG!

  • @bedisrae Yes, they were booed because it was quit a controversial entry. There were very hard rumours of plagiarism, even before the contest. I believe it was of the song "Where did our love go" from The Supremes.

But mostly of all, the UK got booed by the crowd because of actions by English football-hooligans in Luxembourg City in autumn 1983. That is also written in The Eurovision Song Contest - The Official History, by John Kennedy O'Connor

  • @ESFMagazine The commentator keeps saying something about the Supremes and baby love though not sure what. In a book I read they said the crowd booed because of the hooligans and that the backing singers weren't really singing and the real singers were off stage. Even though the lead singer was singing.

  • @ESFMagazine

It does sound a bit like the Supremes..

But probably the hooligans were the reason thanx.

  • The best song in 1984 :)

  • That's a catchy wee tune.

  • Which country won in 1984? Norway with "Diggi-Loo Diggy-Ley"?

  • @shmuli9 Right song - wrong country :) It was Sweden, not Norway. We won in 1985 with La det swinge :)

  • @Aideen73 Yes, right after I wrote that, I realized "Herrey's" was Swedish...

  • I used to have this on a collection tape and also as a single...

  • All Motown songs sound the same to me anyway. I think we were booed because of what the football fans had done the previous year. I don't think Belle and her Belles were responsible for that though.

  • The song was fine and Kit Rolfe (Belle) was a lovely singer we should have heard more of subsequently. They performed well and it is better than Digiloo although the Herreys were pleasant enough.

  • The person who had the concept of a Europe song contest in the early 50s wanted to preserve european culture as he felt there was going to be an american invasion, dure to their post-war presence. He was right!! These girls are the Supremes minus a suntan.

  • I remember this one. I particularly remember the red-head. I think she was in hot gossip before she did this poor attempt at recreating a motown vibe. Don't know why I fancied her now, looking back. She looked like a transvestite (I was just a kid though). They're well out of tune in places too. What an embarrassment.

  • Am I missing something? This sounds and looks fine to me...(considering it was eurovision in the early 80's). It's certainly better than the winner.

  • @Bille994 all though quite good, the track is far from original, in fact it steps back in time, so they cldnt justify it winning.. other wise every year people wld just keep copying the the past and win...

  • @Bille994 Sweden ftw!

  • 0:50 No prize for guessing who's the person on the left is, do we, Royaume-Uni fans?

  • One can see that the backing vocalists sound louder as only 2 singers ... what a bad move from the country that used to claim "we have the best song everything else sucks" ... playback in 1984 ... what a shame! At least Lux was already mad at them for what happened in 1983 so ... playback or not ... they woul never be "friendly welcomed"

  • Well, the SONG is one of the best of ESC, but the PERFORMANCE is one of the worst!

  • wow, it's Cyndi Lauper?

  • my fave song from 1984 =)

  • the ginger one is carrie grant, vocal coach, married to singer david grant currently on kids tv show carrie and davids popshop

  • @dexy0602 It's not Carrie Grant, she was in Sweet Dreams for the UK the year before. Belle and the Devotions were Kit Rolfe, Linda Sofeld and Laura James, although Kit was the only one of the three actually singing.

  • Nice legs shame about the song!

  • Wonder what that lead singer looks like now . Back there she looked a babe .

  • Great song but horrible cloth and hair etc. - however, it's the song that's mattering, so 4 stars from Denmark!

  • i love this!!!

  • screw this- bryan evans my love is deep should have one. and for your info hes my uncle

  • well i thought it was very nice , different and should of won ..

  • Trouble is the Euros have no taste in music like we do . Just listen to some of the crap that does win it .

  • @dogbunkey different yeah ... being bad is a way of being different ... it kinda works in today's Eurovision .... being bad means being good in the televoting. Not in 1984 though ... specially if the 3 girks weren't the real singers on stage and the UK always loves to leave a bad trademark in mainland Europe (for whatever reason mainly football) and then crying like a baby that "in ESC we always had the best songs ... everything else sucks". Yeah right!! LOL

  • The lead singer is the real singer, it's the backing vocals that were mimed

  • @dmce1 Whatever ,,, she is a bad singer real or playbacked ... it was a lousy number overall!

  • @Fabian81 OK, well I think she's a good singer & liked the song but they looked so terrible, I can't understand why they thought it was a good look. My favourite that year is my favourite of all ESC entries of the 80s - Portugal. Beautiful song.

  • @dmce1 Well we can agree ... both Portugal and the Netherlands are the 2 songs here that move me to all kinds of emotions a thing most eurovision songs today can't do! Actually today songs like Maria Guinot and Maribelle wouldd be squashed by the "bad taste televoting"

  • oh mein gott - die Hexen von Eastwick ;)

aber liebe den Song - als Supremes Fan kein wunder ;))

  • The song was stolen! It was just like the Suprimes.

  • wonder where they are now

  • This song should have won !!!!

  • The song was quite alright.. yet the act was a bloody disaster....
