It takes some time. At the beginning of the game, when Mario is at his house, Toad will offer a tutorial on battling. I suggest using it if your really having a problem.

You should really use Jump on the first, then on the second, then go back and kill the first with another jump, then hit the second with another jump for the win... that way Valor Up stays in effect for less time.
