At any periodic methodical level once a society has gained a foothold they have gained the leverage to eccelerate to the next level and expand even faster. That's how we wrap our mind around a problem and make technology from it. Humans will do this with space but this will be a wave that asymptotes it's self. If only more people would be curious about exploring nature.
It is no accident that as the Enlightenment proceeded, the era of knowledge and discovery, the Church declined. The Church thrived on ignorance, fear, darkness, superstition, and illiteracy. When those are dispelled, the Church cannot function because it cannot justify its actions and dogma.
The dutch were of course ... liberal.
