'In elementary school when we would have an air raid drill, all the students would go to the school hallways and the teachers instructed us how to sit against the wall, bend over and put our heads between our legs with our hands on our heads.'
...And then shit our pants with our faces in it? No thanks.
it's almost 12 AM here in dallas, texas and they're running their sirens....i can hear the thunderbolts going off...man i tell you that is a fucking cool and bone chilling sound now this is what a siren should sound like...
We have five of these here for our warning sirens... I still shudder every time I hear them go off. Even though they've only gone off once that I heard that wasn't a test (the other time, I was in school and couldn't hear them). Gotta love it, though.
During the second Gulf War [2003, just before the allies moved on Iraq] I used to pull pranks on my classmates between classes [we don't move from our classrooms in Kuwait. we stay put and teachers come to us instead]. I'd roll up my text book and then do my best imitation of the siren. Gotta admit I pulled it off awesomely [My voice hadn't broken at the time, so I could hit the high pitch]. Everyone would go 'HIT THE DECK' and get down on the floor and cover their heads. Was fucking PRICELESS.
Air raid sirens, especially this type, are funny looking, and they look kind of funny spinning around (to me anyway LOL). But that sound.....O_O! LOL I'm hoping I never have to hear that sound in my life, outside of a test!
I remember hearing this about every other week or so when we were under a tornado warning. Central Wisconsin gets a lot of tornadoes during the summer. Now I live in central FL, which strangely enough, has no type of tornado warning system at all. (Central FL is prone to tornadoes as well.)
im 17 now and i remember in elementary school doing bomb drills, we would be away from all the windows and stand in the hallways with our backs against the walls
@AARDeadORAlive The reason these things don't bother me is because a town I lived in had the T'Bolts...the alert was the county vfd was answering a call; the attack was for the city fd...now the dual tone....tornado warning...THAT ONE did cause concern...
Krauht88....mine too!! When my phone "goes off" no one else reaches for theirs to say the least!! I do get some strange looks though...how about you??
Back when I was young we had one these on the roof top on the school next door on the day JFK got killed I recall my Father talking to my Mother that we could be bomb tonight by the Soviets .Living in Omaha, Nebraska SAC would have been a first strike hit. So I stay up all night looking out the window from my bed waiting for this Thunderbolt to sound off. It stlll creeps me out.
I Remember these! They used to sound those things off every last Friday at the end of the month at 9:00 a.m! I wish they bring them back nowadays for earthquake warnings and Tsunami Alerts!
i remember back in Grammer School here in L.A in the 70's and they got tested once a month on Friday's at 10:00 am throughout the city and the nuns would make use go outside for a practice drill...still freaks me out
@acahurricane1275 That American Restoration episode was a joke. They only visually restored the siren and did not do any research. They didn't check the rotor, chopper, or the motor. They didn't check to see if it was single or 3 phase. Hell, they didn't even cut holes in the mounting pole to allow air to come in.
@Thewoog34 i know i watched it yesterday and it was a complete joke , and the main guy(dont know his name ) says when he does a full restoration he wants everything in working order , all they did was rebend the blower pipe to be plum , and slapped a CD yellow paint job on it , obviously he was to lazy to check the motor , do any research , or anything .
Back during the cold war, Washington DC had a system of 500+ of these Thunderbolt 1000Ts. That would have been the last thing all the politicians would have heard if someone over in the USSR turned the key.
@Krauht88 Mine, too...at least no one else looks at their phone when mine rings. Reminds me of a George Carlin TV skit...what if phones had sirens instead of bells?
@Krauht88 Oh, I know..but it sure is fun. I was doing dealer transfer work a few years back, and two of us had been sent to pick up a car. My partner was driving the chase car, when my phone "rang"...she pulled to the side of the road and started looking for the police...when I picked the phone up and said "Hello"...the look on her face was priceless!!!!
@TheTubbenator The siren used in Silent Hill was actually a Federal STL-10. Both the Thunderbolt and STL-10s were used for the same purpose during the Cold War.
Duck and cover and -- you are a little whisp of carbon in the first 3/5s of 1 second anyway.. DoD comment is 100% true, plus anyone with a reletive in the Air Force that went to work at the "farm" every day in MO or KS -- knows we would have pulled the trigger and M.A.D. may not have been as Mutually Assured as anyone thinks. A horrible war with a death toll that would make a Sociopath cry? Yep. End of the world? No..
@ChristopherSaindon actually one could argue that ACA/ASC was a better company pre 1990s siren wise, and from then to now they are undoubtedly the better company.
@TheOreoDude123 I remember hearing those sirens here in Kuwait during the second gulf war. I both love and hate it. love it because it really gives you that 'WORLD IS FUCKED' feeling hearing it. When you think of an alarm siren the first thing that comes to mind is the precise sound this thing makes. I hate it because of the dread I associate with it. you expect a bomb to smash through the ceiling at any moment when you hear that thing.
When I was going to school in the fifth grade, the school I attended had one of these T-Bolt sirens. During tornado drills, the teachers taught us the same duck and cover procedures in the hallways, but in our case it was all about the tornados. Never did they mention anything of a nuke attack, and I have to say I wonder why. After all, it was the mid 80's and the Cold War was still going on I believe.
@ECgod77 Okay then! Fair enough! By the way, have you ever seen the Duck & Cover movies? Suppose that was just government insurance against public unrest?
Hardly, M.A.D. is a load of cock and bull. You seriously need to research into this subject, the DoD has put decades and billions into research and development...I've got over 347 manuals evolving around NBC.
Odd, with all the potential terror attacks most cities have no warning sirens of any kind these days.
A little late to be sounding the alarm, the Chinese communists now own 60% of America and the wealthy few own the other 40% and they own everyone in Washington. No need for the old attack mode sirens I guess, the war came and went, it is all over, and America we knew was defeated and no alarms were sounded.
@999SilverDog 128 dBs at 100 feet so you would be in trouble. imagine a machine gun going off next to your ear with continuous sound and you could guess what would happen.
@firetemptations screw that! (unless you are just talking about some basic air raid)...the cruel irony is that those who would die in nuclear explosion or blast would be the lucky ones....you really wouldnt want to face the world after fullscale nuclear war and die the slow death of radiation poisoning, some cancer or starvation.
They have one of these Thunderbolts on the roof of croyden fire company. But not for Tornado or air raids. When the Trucks are leaving the station for a fire call.
