It soon won't be. It plans to become the powerhouse of indochina by generating clean energy from the mekong river delta i.e hydro-electricity to sell to its neighbours or the rest of the world, of course this isn't possible without foreign investment. I have been to Luang Prabang 5 years ago. The whole atmosphere is just amazing. Laos and especially Luang Prabang are still a very very special memory in my life.
Going back to Laos and Luang Prabang this year. :-)

Laotians are the most UNFRIENDLY people in south east asia i' ve met.
After been robbed, threatened with a katana, and seen a fight in a pub, e defenetely consider Laos the most unsafe place in south east asia. None of the sites I ve visited are comparable to the beauty of Angkhor or Halong Bay.
Lao Lao (the real one, 50 degrees and not the 5 or 10 degrees the try to give you every time) and Beer Lao are the only good thing about this country.

@SMGJohn Yes it is but so many of the Lao people are wonderful.I wish Vietnam,Lao,Burma and Cambodia all had decent governments.Unfortunatly they do not.Most citizens would prefure a better government but do not have the means to make it happen.
I haven ' t been to Burma, but in Laos I ve found what I thought North Korea is about government. People are NOT free, and NOT happy. And they hate tourists.
Totally different in Hanoi and expecially Cambodia, where they are EXTREMELY friendly.
@villapierre Yea they have a horriable government in Lao,Cambodia,Burma and V/N for sure.I have traveled all except Burma.It sounds like your exerience in Lao and mine were quite differant as far as the people of Laos goes but then my girl friend at the time is Isaan Thai of Lao decent and speaks Lao perfectly.Maybe that was the differance I don't know.

Thanks for sharing such a wonderful video..make me feel at home and miss home...I left Laos for a long time and never been back and I do want to come back for a visit. I went to cambodia vietnam laos and thailand for 5 months from feb2009 to june 2009. I loved every country. Luang Prubang is very enjoyable but you have to know where to go. I have been there twice with a friend who grew up in Vientiene, so I didn't make the errors I might have. If you want night life, go to the disco on the outskirts of town. Don't pay more than 120,000 kip for a room, unless you want to stay in that French Colonial place, which is $80 US. This is a great country, the real untouched part of Laos is in the south. This is not Thailand! It's better.

I have been to Luang Prabang 5 years ago. The whole atmosphere is just amazing. Laos and especially Luang Prabang are still a very very special memory in my life.

Whoa! Laos and The Philippines have so much in common. They have those motorcycles with the sidecar thing, and they drink Soft Drinks in Plastics too! But in the Philippines there's not alot of temples, and Monks.

Laotians are the most UNFRIENDLY people in south east asia i' ve met.
After been robbed, threatened with a katana, and seen a fight in a pub, e defenetely consider Laos the most unsafe place in south east asia. None of the sites I ve visited are comparable to the beauty of Angkhor or Halong Bay.
Lao Lao (the real one, 50 degrees and not the 5 or 10 degrees the try to give you every time) and Beer Lao are the only good thing about this country.
I ve never seen them laugh. Go to Cambodia!

great place with more to experience than this movie:
the places where the normal lao people live are in my
eyes more or same interesting than the tourist attractions.
we had a great night with a Luang Prabang family who
invited my girlfriend and me to eat and celebrate with them
without knowing each other before. we danced and drunk
and it was so great. lao is wonderful - we took the boat
the river upwards to nong kiao (?) - a little village at the river
we come there again in future :-)

@CrashnSpyro4Evar Laos is pronounced the way the lady in this video pronounces it. The Lao sometimes call their county Muang Lao or Pathet Lao. In English, the word for Lao people is Laotian (which rhymes with "the ocean").

Luang Prabang is the oldest Lao city. Formerly called Swa, before it was conquered in 698 A.D. and became a Lao city named Chiang Dong Chiang Tong. It paved the way for Lao settlement in Indochina peninsular and later the capital of Lan Xang 1353.

I haven ' t been to Burma, but in Laos I ve found what I thought North Korea is about government. People are NOT free, and NOT happy. And they hate tourists.
Totally different in Hanoi and expecially Cambodia, where they are EXTREMELY friendly.

@villapierre Yea they have a horriable government in Lao,Cambodia,Burma and V/N for sure.I have traveled all except Burma.It sounds like your exerience in Lao and mine were quite differant as far as the people of Laos goes but then my girl friend at the time is Isaan Thai of Lao decent and speaks Lao perfectly.Maybe that was the differance I don't know.

I can't remember how it went exactly: Two monks saw a beautiful woman standing by a river which she needed to cross, but could not cross. So one of the monks picked her up and carried her to the other side. Then the other monk said to him, "but that was a woman". To which he replied, "what you saw was a woman. NOOOO!!!!! You should not buy food from the vendors. You are encouraging local people to sell the food instead of giving it to the Monks as their religion dictates. This is an example of irresponsible tourism. The National Lao Tourism board have asked tourists not to take part in the Alms-Giving as it is interfering. By all means you can watch, but at a respectful distance from the Monk.

I never think negative about my own country communist or not--I still think is my first home. I love it here. The people have good heart and people live there like brother's and sister....

Luang Prubang is very enjoyable but you have to know where to go. I have been there twice with a friend who grew up in Vientiene, so I didn't make the errors I might have. If you want night life, go to the disco on the outskirts of town. Don't pay more than 120,000 kip for a room, unless you want to stay in that French Colonial place, which is $80 US. This is a great country, the real untouched part of Laos is in the south. This is not Thailand! It's better.
