Hmmm... I'm a history teacher... I don't think this song was written for her - it was written by a Jewish school teacher in New York named Abel Meeropol... pen name, Lewis Allen... There are disputes over who set it to music... but many accounts testify that Allen and his wife and a female singer friend of their did... one of Billie's managers heard it and introduced her to it... she had a hard time getting it recorded...

Absolutely irritating that this excellent singer's vocals are wasted upon a noisy, apparently uninterested audience - so typical of us singers' lives when playing at certain gigs.
