I wish I could do this... My gerbils not too long had a fight and had to be separated (both males). Since then, the submissive one has been one moody little bugger and hasn't let me near him once. Even giving him a new toy or cleaning his food is a chore - he charges towards your hand to give you a bite. And of course the food and water are changed daily! So my poor fingers are covered in bites and scratches :(
The little sod can't be sociable and nice like his brother!
2 days ago, I got 2 females (aged 6-7 weeks). It's the first time I've ever had gerbils and I'd to train them to climb onto my hand so I can pick them up. I'm really frightened of hurting them...Any advice welcome!
I would like to breed my two gerbils. I have deffinitely identified their sex, and they are both a year and a half. I heard, from the previous owner, that they had babies once, but ate them. I don't know if this is true (as the last owner thought they were Degus!!) but if it is true, is it possible to breed them without this happening? Can I raise the pups myself? Or was that just circumstancial, and I may not have to worry about it this time? THANKS!!
A mom, a dad, and a litter of babies. They were five weeks old and went to their adoptive home the weekend after the video was made. Hand tamed babies are very easy to place.
I bought him mid december, he was small, I don't know for sure though, but his nose is a little red, been red a couple days now, do topical antibiotics like neosporin really help?
Something amazing has happened though, I managed to pick begley up and hold him in my hand for a little bit. I'm taking it slow, but it's rewarding when you manage to tame a new rodent pet
I can't wait to get my little guy hand tame, he's real young yet, good thing though. He takes food from my hand he' crawled on my hand managed to pick him up but he's still jumping out right after
Gerbils can bite, yes, but they only tend to bit when somthink has made them angry. also when you tame them and put your hand it the cage the sniff your hand, lick it and bite but this isnt it been horrible it is simply getting to no ur sent for future, if it every does bite dont move ur hand away fast as it will scare it, just blow gently and say NO kinda gently it will learn if you keep doing it..... lol i no u didnt need all that info but oh well i gave it u lol, soz for the spellings
what if my gerbil bits me? because it jumpes towards my hand like its going to bit me :( lol what do I do, i wanna hold it i never held a gerbil in my life, it been in the cage for a very long time, it never out.
you could feed it some food in your hand. if its been in the cage for a long time then it wont like to be picked up. you should remove everything from the tank, so that you are the most interesting thing, and DONT corner the gerbil, gerbils dont tend to bite if you dont corner them, just rest your hand in the cage and let it run over and sniff your hand dont move your hand or try to pick it up. do this for about 3 days and then put some food on your hand and see if it will eat it. lt me no hw go
you need to get it out, often when gerbils jump forward like this its out of curiosity, YOU NEED TO START NOW! GERBILS ARE VERY SOCIAL AND NEED INTERACTION WITH OTHER GERBILS OR HUMANS! if he isnt with another gerbil then dont introduce another because they will kill eachother. my gerbil died on thursday and he was so tame he sat in my hand when we had him put to sleep. :(

@RobRoy316 the babies were probably sick they only eat babies of they are sick
viewtifulethan90 1 year ago
@viewtifulethan90 no if they dont eat mealworms (need protein) !then they eat there own babys
fruitrollups100 1 year ago
@fruitrollups100 Feed the mom a little bit of boiled egg and she wont "eat" her babies. Mealworms are an option but boiled eggs are easier to get.

@101martial If she's always huddled in a corner, you might want to get her checked. She could be sick.

xFoolyCoolyx 2 years ago
I did, and one site said a topical anti biotic like neosporin would help. His nose is looking better but I need to know for sure

I like to breed in a 10 gallon; to keep the parents focused. These babies all were moved to a nursery tank and then place in pairs in new homes.
The parents have a two week old litter of 4 now
