  • thumbs up if you watch it in 2012!

  • My love for cinema brought me here.

  • Hugo bring me here !

  • Has anyone else ever wondered what the moon said after it got hit in the eye? (6:05)

  • The stupid narration totally ruins the whole movie... it takes the whole magic away.. this movie is made to be silent...

  • Ok if you fall of a cliff on the moon you land in the sea on earth? NASA has been lying to me all this time!

  • Thumbs up if you saw the movie Hugo Cabret !

  • @ForeverMichael95 Great movie!

  • @eftaxiaskostas True ;)

  • where you found these videos wao old old videos

  • The Smashing Pumpkins brought me here.

  • If only space travel was this easy

  • Méliès had intended to release the film in the United States to profit from it. Thomas Edison's film technicians, however, secretly made copies of it and distributed it throughout the country. While the film was still hugely successful, Méliès eventually went bankrupt.[1]--Wikipedia

  • I am truly inspired! Thumbs up if you are too!

  • A masterpeice of cinema history!a classic!

  • if your wandering why this looks familiar, its because the whole Melancholy and The Infinite Sadness album by Smashing Pumpkins is based off of this video! :)

  • AHAHAHAHA D:

  • imaginative and visually stimulating back in a time when special effects were not made with a computer and no one knew what was in space.

  • This was one of the first movies ever, I studied alot of movie history now I finally get to see this, but this was not a Lumiere film!

  • The movie is simply marvelous!

  • TONIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT TONIGHT

  • @RandomJackOfDoom haha fuck yeah, Smashing Pumpkins

  • loved dis movie thx 2 hugo!

  • hehe, a trip is right. The mushrooms on the moon are appropriate.

  • Everytime i watch this, i'm in complete awe... Georges Melies is one of my great inspirations.

  • @SuperBieberfan1994 No Wonder bieber fans are so dumb. ITS CALLED HUGO GODAMMITT

  • @electronicguy19 Actually the book is called 'The Invention of Hugo Cabret' not HUGO GODAMMITT

  • @Pbrinco i just got done reading that book! Lol

  • I looked George Melies up because I was reading a book about him and I wondered if he was real so I am liking this video.

  • Brilliant. Fantastic milestone in movie history.

  • Papa Georges made movies?

  • I watched Hugo and when I saw this all I could think of was Smashing Pumpkins. Is this where they got the inspiration for that video? This film is beautiful >.<

  • "Mr President then said, "Come at me Bro"

  • The Invention of Hugo Cabret brought me here...

  • So what we really saw was violent invaders from another planet come to the peaceful kingdom of the Selenites. These invaders savagely murder some Selenites who were only trying to make first contact. Then the invaders brutally assassinate the Selenite leader before returning home, to undoubtedly bring back more invading forces.

  • Dislikes?!?!!?!?!? You dislikers better never watch a moive ever agian in your goddamn lives!!!

  • This reminds me of every invasion of foreign lands by countries. Except, the invaders don't leave, but totally enslave the native population.

I'm sure that was going to be the sequel

  • 2 things.

How could they breath in space?

How do they expect to get back?

What do they expect to eat, no packed lunch. =\

How did they get the trigonometry right to not miss the moon!?

  • @Krisando It's the first sci-fi film in the history of the art form. Don't ask questions ಠ_ಠ

  • @Krisando That's 4 things, and they all have one answer:

This was the first sci fi film ever. Movie were so new back then, the scientific accuracy of the events portrayed were the last thing on anyone's mind.

This film was a trailblazer, don't poke fun at it.

  • why all the women back in them days were white@fat?

  • I'm sure that's just how John F Kennedy proposed the idea too haha

  • how come come this guy ended up in povertey with masterepcies, yet michael bay makes millions out of shit?!

  • they better have had travel insurance.

  • An old classic from the pioneering age of cinema! I love it.

  • who gives a fuck what IMDB rating it is

  • @vlado544 Exactly, IMDB can suck my dick for all I care.

  • The backgrounds on this work are amazing.

  • The Moon reminds me of Majoras Mask.

  • thumbs up if u read the book hugo cabret

  • @mahek161 just did :P

  • @mahek161 and seen the movie, which has the short in its entirety in the movie!! Was it converted into 3d for the movie? I plan on seeing it today...

  • Moon, you scary..

  • 240p deserved for the best

  • 240p for the real experience

  • i found out about this from the movie hugo...

  • gay.

  • Nope, this film isn't the first to contain animation. Two years earlier, in 1900, J. Stuart Blackton made The Enchanted Drawing. In 1899 Arthur Melbourne-Cooper produced a stop-motion-film called Matches : an Appeal. And in 1892, Charles-Emile Reynaud was projecting praxinoscope-like animated loops, such as Pauvre Pierrot. Melies already used the stop-trick-effect in 1896 (The Vanishing Lady). In 1895, the Edison Manufacturing Company premiered it in The Execution of Mary Stuart. Look 'em up!

  • @mwvandersteen Pretty awesome, thank you! :)

  • Please be aware that the final scenes are missing in this print - if you want to see them (and find out what happened to the alien who jumped on the rocket at the end), you should check out the 12:58 version of Le voyage dans la lune, to the right.

  • watch?v=NOG3eus4ZSo&ob=av2e

    Smashing pumpkins anyone?

  • hugo was retarded. why were they speaking with english accents in paris?

  • @shimanchunutakara Because it's meant for the american audience that doesn't speak french, obviously. The way I see it: They could have done it in french or english, not english with french accents cause THAT would be retarded.

  • @terepotere i'm a bit spoiled with linguistics i guess, i speak 6 different languages and french is one of them. seeing a movie set in french with the actors speaking english and having british accents to accomodate the American audience is just funny to me. if they wanted to accomodate americans why bother with the british accent? to make it seem foreign? americans are that dumb to realize how rediculous that is?

  • @shimanchunutakara I suppose the actors were british then. But to be honest, I didn't even notice that. I was too busy enjoying the film. Maybe I would feel different about if spoke more languages...

  • @shimanchunutakara I thought they sounded more French than British.

I would have been happy if the just translated any title cards and left the narration off.

  • The Hugo movie wasn't appealing to me. It was an alright movie, but I much enjoy the book rather then the movie. And 'A Trip to the Moon' is a masterpiece.

  • I'm confused, what happened to the guy who grabbed hold of the rope?

  • Is this silent movie featured in Hugo? I haven't seen the movie yet.

  • I'm a little curious as to why the council at the beginning seems to be made up entirely of wizards...

  • @UltimateMastodon It's Unseen University. :)

  • @UltimateMastodon Wizards?

    I thought they were racists!

  • @UltimateMastodon yeah realy

  • @TheAirsoftexpert551 some of the facts were true..like Georges Méliès story. he really went from magician to film maker. and he did go from bankrupt to recognized and awarded for his art. the robot toy and hugo were just made up i think..lol but THE FILM WAS AMAZING :)

  • @blue4everd I just read on Wikipedia that that Geroges used to make automatons....

  • @madSkits which is true..but im talkin about automaton drawing the picture...:p

  • I know that Melies was real, but was the movie Hugo? Was it based on a true story?

  • @DennisBayazitov No, it was based on a book, sadly. Wonderful film though.

  • Brian Selznick really lets Georges Melies tie in with the story greatly, and when i found out most things in Hugo Cabret where real, I had to see this film for myself.

  • It is amazing to me how a movie with no dialogue can present a plot better than most movies with dialogue. Film production used to be such an art.

  • My film teacher in college (1992 or so) loved Georges Méliès, so I've seen this and many of his other films long ago. Hugo was great, though, and I'm glad Méliès is getting recognition now.

  • @TheAirsoftexpert551 no not realy

  • Hugo didn't bring me here... But I'm glad people are now taking notice of it. Thank you Scorsese!!

  • The movie Hugo brought me here. I can't believe I've never heard of George Melies.

  • THAKNS,FIRST PLOT MOVIE EVER, NO? IT HAD ORIGINAL SOUND?

  • The book (The Invention of Hugo Cabret) is a classic, the movie (Hugo) is a classic, and A Trip to the Moon is a classic.

  • @MinamuTV classicception!

  • awesome i love tjis movie

  • URGGHH! WHY THE HELL WOULDN'T YOU UPLOAD THIS IN 1080p!?!!?

    (Sarcasm.)

  • @JakeStarstorm Haha actually tried to watch it in HD until i realized that HD technology doesn't come out for 100 years.

  • @JakeStarstorm this is one of the first movies ever its 110 years ago 1902 2012

    -1902 110.

  • Hugo is doing our world such a great service. So many of the children and young adults right now have no idea what wonderment the silver screen brought us, nor do they even attempt to enjoy it. I was pleased to see Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin in the film as well. I sincerely hope Hugo will spark and interest and desire in our current generation to watch "old movies".

  • I'm 17 and I love Buster Keaton, and it wasn't Hugo that made that happen. It was my massive love for film.

  • Actually I don't understand why the english title is "a trip to the moon" since the french one means "a trip in the moon", which is an accurate play on words.

  • @ALEXOUKAKOU good question - what is the actual french translation(s)?

  • I read the book before I saw the movie, so technically the book brought me here.

  • Lol its funny because 480p is almost the same as 360p.

  • @hiopretiop1928 WHAT MEANS [P?

  • If you like this, You'll love "The Phantom Carriage"

  • Silent is best.

  • thumbs up if you read the book of hugo before you saw the movie BEFORE watching tis! awesome movie! both Hugo and A Trip to the Moon

  • lol! the astronomers are all wizards

  • 9:19 better than most special effects test on youtube.

  • Did they know that they wouldn't be able to breath on the moon, or that there was only a fraction of gravity that there is on earth, or was this already known?
