Méliès had intended to release the film in the United States to profit from it. Thomas Edison's film technicians, however, secretly made copies of it and distributed it throughout the country. While the film was still hugely successful, Méliès eventually went bankrupt.[1]--Wikipedia
if your wandering why this looks familiar, its because the whole Melancholy and The Infinite Sadness album by Smashing Pumpkins is based off of this video! :)
I watched Hugo and when I saw this all I could think of was Smashing Pumpkins. Is this where they got the inspiration for that video? This film is beautiful >.<
So what we really saw was violent invaders from another planet come to the peaceful kingdom of the Selenites. These invaders savagely murder some Selenites who were only trying to make first contact. Then the invaders brutally assassinate the Selenite leader before returning home, to undoubtedly bring back more invading forces.
@Krisando That's 4 things, and they all have one answer:
This was the first sci fi film ever. Movie were so new back then, the scientific accuracy of the events portrayed were the last thing on anyone's mind.
This film was a trailblazer, don't poke fun at it.
Nope, this film isn't the first to contain animation. Two years earlier, in 1900, J. Stuart Blackton made The Enchanted Drawing. In 1899 Arthur Melbourne-Cooper produced a stop-motion-film called Matches : an Appeal. And in 1892, Charles-Emile Reynaud was projecting praxinoscope-like animated loops, such as Pauvre Pierrot. Melies already used the stop-trick-effect in 1896 (The Vanishing Lady). In 1895, the Edison Manufacturing Company premiered it in The Execution of Mary Stuart. Look 'em up!
Please be aware that the final scenes are missing in this print - if you want to see them (and find out what happened to the alien who jumped on the rocket at the end), you should check out the 12:58 version of Le voyage dans la lune, to the right.
@shimanchunutakara Because it's meant for the american audience that doesn't speak french, obviously. The way I see it: They could have done it in french or english, not english with french accents cause THAT would be retarded.

@shimanchunutakara I suppose the actors were british then. But to be honest, I didn't even notice that. I was too busy enjoying the film. Maybe I would feel different about if spoke more languages...
The Hugo movie wasn't appealing to me. It was an alright movie, but I much enjoy the book rather then the movie. And 'A Trip to the Moon' is a masterpiece.
@TheAirsoftexpert551 some of the facts were true..like Georges Méliès story. he really went from magician to film maker. and he did go from bankrupt to recognized and awarded for his art. the robot toy and hugo were just made up i think..lol but THE FILM WAS AMAZING :)
Brian Selznick really lets Georges Melies tie in with the story greatly, and when i found out most things in Hugo Cabret where real, I had to see this film for myself.
My film teacher in college (1992 or so) loved Georges Méliès, so I've seen this and many of his other films long ago. Hugo was great, though, and I'm glad Méliès is getting recognition now.
Hugo is doing our world such a great service. So many of the children and young adults right now have no idea what wonderment the silver screen brought us, nor do they even attempt to enjoy it. I was pleased to see Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin in the film as well. I sincerely hope Hugo will spark and interest and desire in our current generation to watch "old movies".
Actually I don't understand why the english title is "a trip to the moon" since the french one means "a trip in the moon", which is an accurate play on words.
@RichyNthings class finished reading Hugo and we watched this and I was fascinated at how they made those sets and all we have now are graphic effects like stuff with green screens and I wish we still did this because I would want to do that when I get older
I love old films... I may be a child of the 21st century, but the inventions of the 19th were so incredible! I Love going to my local theater, they have really old projectors on display, there were such amazing machines!
Lol I read the invention of Hugo Cabret thinking that George Melies was some one made up then I started a jigsaw puzzle that had the moon with the rocket in its eye and I recognized it from the book so I searched up the movie and found it. Now it is my most favorite movie ever :P
@Phagitue The subtle Smashing Pumpkins reference... Genius ;) I knew the moon looked familiar before I saw the movie Hugo, I just couldn't remember where I knew it from, and even though I love silent films I knew that I didn't remember watching the original, so thanks for jogging my memory :)
Did they know that they wouldn't be able to breath on the moon, or that there was only a fraction of gravity that there is on earth, or was this already known?
@erric1234 They weren't sure, but some thought that there might be a breathable atmosphere in low lying valleys on the moon. They also thought there was an "atmosphere" in space which they called ether. This story is loosely based on Jules Verne's book by the same name. His books are a great resource of contemporary thought in science and engineering.
Its trppy how some things look solid backround and the characters go into them like the bullet casing . abd how most of the people were seeing in this movie short are all dead
I wonder if the Selenite clinging to the back of the pod at the end made it intact to earth only to produce vast numbers and take over? 'Alien' anyone?
