  • Hey nutn, what's a good backpack for bug out situatuions?

  • you say you usually buy backpacks off season. When exactly is off season?

  • QUICK HEADS UP to anyone looking for a 2010 Kelty redwing 44. I just bought the redwing 44 at wwww. sunnysports. com for $48 w/ free shipping because my order was over $50! check it out

  • on my friend's redwing i was able to fit my ultralight backpacking tent in one of the flow-through pockets and that REALLY helped because i was using it for a 1 night backpacking trip and when we got to the shelter it was FULL of people and not but 30 minuets after we got there did it start raining and w/out the flow-through i wouldn't have had enough room to put my tent in so on that trip i WOULD have been screwed so ya i like the flow-through ;)

  • some go lite backpacks like ferrino boulder 38 have both side opening capability.

  • My Redwing 3100 arrived today from Campmor for $50. Thanks Nutnfancy for all the great reviews and gear recomendations. Keep up all the great work!

  • Hey, just wanted you to know that because of your sweet review on the Redwing, I just picked up the All Black (my favorite variant of the colors) 3100 for $52 with free Two Day Shipping from Backcountry Edge (after the free new member discount)

My pack arrived yesterday, just in time for my hiking trip tomorrow. It definitely exceeds my expectations I had for a mid-size pack!!! Super stoked to use it and all my gear is already loaded up and ready to go! Thanks again!

  • Hey Nutn, would the Kelty Redwing make for a good B.O.B. during a USK? What about in a WROL...what kind of bag would you suggest for that scenario? What do you think of the Maxpedition packs? Extremely anxious to hear what you have to say. Thanks.

  • Great review man! I just pick one of these babies up for $50!

  • I have a Kelty Redwing 2900 (2900 cubic inches) that I bought a few years ago. Been happy with it. Recently I have wanted a slightly larger pack so today I bought the Kelty Redwing 3100 (3100 cubic inches). I have the 2 packs side by side now on the floor. I have been measuring every dimension and they are essentially identical in size. Looking at them they also appear to be exactly the same size. What's the deal here? This is bizarre and I am really disappointed.

  • i'm using ferrino boulder 38 wich is 38l rucksack it's nilon tube like kelty continium but it doesen´t have waterbottle holsters acsee is from both sides top and bottom meaning that if you have important stuff at bottom of a pack thn you can get to it easier. problem is that the prices are high but these are quality products.

  • hey man im lookin for a bag thatll carry about 35 pounds of gear tops. gear conists of a couple textbooks, fall clothes (medium weight ish), sleeping bag, sleeping pad..i dont need anything super high quality or anything, and some basic weatherproofness would be nice. i was lookin at the high sierra col pack at 35 literes. what do you think?

  • Just dropped my order for a Redwing 3100 last night from Ebags. $72 shipped, I'll give it a whirl! I'm stoked! I've always given you crap about the "no axe" due to SAWC but I think I'll be doing my wood splitting by batoning my ESEE Knives/RAT Cutlery RC-6 with this pack!

  • @adaman04 My GB Wildlife fits just fine in the slot between the side pocket and the main pack, just like Nutn's RTAK 2, so as long as your axe isn't too big, you should do allright.

  • @dunfamalb I've found a couple different ways to attach an axe to the Kelty in the last few months. Sliding the handle in the sleeve behind the pocket like you said, really works great!

  • Can't you get a very light very warm down sleeping bag that you could lash to this pack? I assume you'd pay an arm and leg though

  • SO Strongly Opinionated LOL ~!!!

  • Just bought myself a Kelty Redwing 3100 (black) from campmor for $60 w/o shipping.

  • hey nutn, what do you think about the ALICE pack

  • Love the Kelty Redwing. Thanks for the review.

  • I have used my Redwing as luggage for 3 days using my sleeping bag and pad music cables, etc, clothes, sleeping sandals, tent, water purifier toiletries, med kit, nalgene bottle, etc. So don't say this pack is not a 3 day pack or more and i'm 6'4" 325lbs

  • I picked up a kelty 3100 for $50 on ebay, new new new

  • Good job! I really want this one. Looking out for a good price.

  • I'm kind of on a budget, and I'm debating between the

    Kelty Redwing (3100) - $90

    or a

    Jansport Big Bear (3600) - $70

  • get the Kelty

  • When the golite galaxy was developed I started used it. The large version is about 4600. I love that pack.

  • 57.35 liters, roughly.

  • Great review! I recently got a Redwing 3100...the 2009 version. Seems Kelty brought back the "flow-through" side pouches :- D. There is velcro on the bottom of the pouches near the mesh pockets. This way you can either put something straight through or keep it closed on the bottom for throwing some light stuff in them...very cool. Kelty really does make some good stuff. Loved your reviews...very informative.

  • 3500 cubic inches: how much is that in liters? Here in Europe we measure backpack sizes in liters.

  • 100 CI=1.638 Liters so 3500 CI=57.354Liters

    You should try google sometime

  • i have a 4750 cubic inch kelty coyote pack do you think you could pack enough supplies and tools ect for like a week? Hay Nutn wheres your favorite place to backpack in Oregon I live in Salem.

  • The awesome Kelty Redwing pack is on sale at Cabela's for only $60 (REI and most other places are asking $100!)

I am planning on getting one this week. It seems this is only a week long sale so get them while they last!

    Thanks for the review nutnfancy!

  • 09:47 - paAAHHc. lol

  • lol

  • Great review!

So good in fact that I got the same older model Redwing.

Love the pack and I can't wait to work it hard on my next trip.

    One note:

The newer model Redwings do NOT have flow-through behind the side pockets which was a deal breaker for me. If that's an important feature for you then you'll want to look for the older models.

  • Another excellent review nutn'...your reviews rock as always. Thanks for doing it for us, we really appreciate the hard work. cheers!

  • In the video you said the Kelty was 3500. When I bought my Redwing in November '07 the largest size was 3100. On the one I have there are strap point under the bag for strapping a tent/sleeping bag.

Also, the Redwing I have has daisychain all the way down the front with an Iceaxe loop at the end of the daisy.

Love my Redwing and plan to get many years of use out of it.

  • Good comment, thanks. Yep mine is the 3500 and they have reduced its size over the years. They are very similar in capacities though. Great job getting one.

  • @nutnfancy They have one at my local store but I was surprised to see that the men's 3100 pack doesn't have lashing straps on the bottom for sleeping pads and bag. The women's does though lol. Maybe I could sow some straps from an old backpack on?

  • @MrVoiceofreason123 That depends upon what year the pack was made. I bought a 2010 version, and the lashing points are there.

  • @nutnfancy

First off, love the videos. Second the redwing is great all around go out and get it done pack but i've noticed as models change they are making them smaller, lighter, and sacrificing (at least on the redwing) beefiness over weight. For instance on the current model the shoulder straps are sewn at the top and bottom whereas on my '09 model the nylon webbing goes the length of the strap. A bit sad to see the change but Kelty the warranty is a fair trade.

  • @pathagriez

I've had a kelty redwing 2650 (aka cubic inches) its now a 44 as in liters but i digress. I've had one since about '09 i use it constantly from day trips to school to overnights and in one occasion it saved my back from a nasty motorcycle accident, taking the brunt of the fall and sliding on pavement at 30mph. Suffering only minor injuries to the pack and myself i sent it in for repair a few months ago and they repaired it no questions asked under warranty.

  • If you miss the flow-through pockets and are looking for a very similar backpack, check out the Mountainsmith Approach 3.0. I looked at both the Kelty and the Approach. Liked the smaller size-2,050 cu in, amazing org. ability, and versatile. Small enough to use for gym/ urban wear; big enough for day hike;even an overnight (3 days may be pushing it). Compression straps, side pockets, lash points, great open shovel + no flo-through pockets! I like Kelty but too big + no flo-through pockets.

  • I bought a medium Redwing earlier this year, maybe an '07 pack or an '08. It doesnt have the pass through side pocket anymore :(

I'd like to carry my Gerber Gator machete in one, but oh well. Im looking forward to actually putting the pack to use soon!

  • Great review on these two internal frame packs. As with all of your reviews I learn new things. If its just termanology or a bit of hard earned experience it is all appreciated. Thanks again for your time. Jet over and out

  • Could you please do a review on the black KA-BAR camp knife? It looks good to me. If you have the time of course.

  • I think he has done reviews on several KABAR knives. Search his channel and you'll find them.

  • Nutnfancy, its not PCV its ABS plastic and weighs less that Half of PVC. Check it out. 1/2 would be good for fishing poles

  • What's the name of the song you use in the intros to your newer videos?

I can't get it out of my head.

  • Don't know how original it is but I just call it the "TNP Theme." Using a ready-made tutorial I just put it together with my own modifications from a music program (changed instrumentation). Thanks.

  • @nutnfancy Also loving the song, my girlfriend is even singing it with me when i watch your clips in bed at night when i cant sleep :)

  • Are you serious Why would he make one on a .22 there are thousands of 22 models.

  • great vvideo can u make a video on the 22 rifle

  • Cool vid Nutn, on to part two!!

  • I'm an eagle scout and have used my beloved HUGE Kelty RedCloud 6650 for years! I love it, and your videos! Keep it up dude! Gotta love the outdoors.

  • Kelty makes great packs and gear. Also, ospray packs are amazing

  • zomg! XD

  • where do u keep your guns when you are not carrying them??

  • great info, fill one up!

    thanks for the sideload tips

  • ON my backpack, similar to those in size, at the very bottom it has a elastic waterproof cover that comes out and covers the whole pack. You ever used any like that, it's pretty handy when hiking or in the back of a truck in the rain. great video

  • Great breakdown and critique.

Been looking for a film like this for a bit.

    Large packs to follow?

  • I carry a 40 degree sleeping bag and still carry a large back.

  • Fail, lol.

  • Cool i use those medium sized packs for a day trip.
