Michael is a great player.Such ravishing phrasing and tone. His genius and musicality moves me just as much if not more than Segovias and thats saying something! he, just like segovia, conveys something magical and extra special when he plays which is truly rare. I feel honoured to have watched and heard him. Bravo to yet another youtube guitar genius. But hey, there can never be too many for me.
People going to Segovia's master classes expect his feedback. It isn't like Segovia walked into someone's concert and criticized him. They are looking for critical feedback that will help them hone their skill. If all Segovia did was sit back and applaud, they wouldn't have anything for their effort but an autograph. Segovia is not being arrogant or rude. Rude is when you play for your end-of-term juries & the professors are chatting and checking their email on their phones.
Thank goodness we have evolved well beyond Segovia's interpretations The point of the masterclass is not "my way or the highway" but rather to develop the player. I give MC great for following his own path and declaring about his own choice of fingering, "I think it's good." Segovia's response makes me cringe, "I no like it..." without a reason why. Instead we just get sulen petulance from Segovia for the rest of the class. Regardless of being part of history, others surpass his playing
To all who think Segovia's fingerings are inferior or somehow wrong please post your videos of your Master Classes. Players like Bream, Parkening, and Williams didn't have a problem playing Segovia fingerings in their renditions and MCs with Segovia so I guess you guys are better than them.
Segovia(s) fingerings not very musical?..Well, coming from such an authority--- like yourself --- Ill take it to the bank. Youre the best!.Thanks for the info!
Update Folks----dark and cloudy with a 100% chance foreclosure. Ignorance is bliss!!!
I've played many, many of Segovias transcriptions and usually his fingerings are just not very musical... I alway end up changing them to get closer to what the composer have actually written.
@toffetoff John Williams, Christopher Parkening, and Julian Bream all used Segovia fingerings in their recitals with Segovia. If they didn't have a problem with them then why would you ? If you are on the same level as the aforementioned players then I'm sure you could post some videos of your playing and MAster Classes so we could see and hear for ourselves.
@bowiemott Bream fingered his own music - he read from Segovia's edtions but he changed lots of things. Williams played Segovia's fingerings as a child, but in important pieces , for example the Bach Chaconne, he plays very different fingerings and notes to Segovia. Get your facts right mofo.
@LutenistDeMari Perhaps you didn't read my post carefully ? While Bream and Williams participated in Segovia's masterclass they did indeed adhere to Segovia fingerings. Are you disputing this ?
@LutenistDeMari I totally agree. Segovia elevated the guitar but did not create definitive interpretations. Segovia may be a starting point but hardless the colossus many here make him out to be. He never was the grand master, just one of the first. Bream, Williams, Russell and many more of the following generation are better players and interpretters.
Why is it arrogance? He was abrupt, but so what. He was imparting his great wisdom on his students. The points he was making were important. His students were better for it.
k, its hard not to be arrogant when you run something called the MASTER CLASS i mean when people see you as the height of culture in your field, it kinda goes to your head. Pavorati was arrogant, Mozart was arrogant, Segovia was arrogant. its just the way virtuoso's are
Gotta agree with sixstring . Arrogants and confidence go hand in hand in this setting. Segovia is known for protecting the art. Hes simply watching out for his baby.
Segovia was a very arrogant person. MC reached his hand at the end of this video and he ignored it. AS also said that the electric guitar was an awful instrument. That says pretty much about him. I know that AS was the one who brought the classical guitar where it is now but at the same time I'm glad he's someone from the past. That's the good thing about YouTube, people can see how "legendary" people like Segovia really were. An asshole, in my opinion.
he wasn't an asshole, he was acting the way he did so chapdelaine could improve. chapdelaine himself said that he came there just to play for segovia, not to learn...segovia was critical to break down his ego and show him that he still could learn...10 years of experience vs 70+..cmon..
I agree with this. I also think there was a bit of arrogance in Andres Segovia. He saw the instrument a certain way, and he is largely responsible for the repertoire of the classical guitar today, so he felt he knew the instrument best. He was very critical of other classical guitarists, including Yepes, Pujol and Bream, but he was also instrumental to the status that the instrument has today.
@alex86730 I particulary think he was pretty much an asshole when he wanted. he could have said things in a polite way without putting him down in front of all the people, which is not a good thing. For instance, Tommy Emmanuel, not only he is the best acoustic guitarist ever, he is a very cool and humble guy. If we have to speak about ego battles... segovia needs another big room for his ego itself.
@alex86730 He forgot that when he was just a boy that came out of the bushes, a well known luthier that believed in him, put his ego apart (if he happened to have any) and give segovia one of his guitars, which was a demonstration of having some values... but it seems he didn´t pick up that little detail... anyway, it´s my opinion. I just fell compelled to say something.
Segovia knew Miguel Llobet and even had advice coming straight from Francisco Tarrega in he young days. You could either listen and learn his teachings or go home and teach your self like he did. And like many other great guitar composers did. Conclusion, stop criticizing someone who's not even alive any more.
ive actually met this guy and he is completely different now with a whole new outlook on classical music and his own arrangements of his songs and others.
I think he wanted to impress Andres Segovia instead of coming to learn. I also think that being forced into notice by Segovia was a less optimum but still welcome conclusion for Chapdelaine. The goal of a master class is not to impress but to learn from the master, and I think he was largely showing off in this video instead of playing to show what he had learned and recieving good criticism. I do not think "I don't like this piece" is good criticism on technique from a master class.
If one serious Classical or Flamenco guitarist in a thousand thinks Manitas de Plata rates higher than Segovia, he or she must be mad. He's not even rated by flamenco players. He was fun, flashy, and entertaining.
And Segovia can be excused a lot, after what he did for the guitar. Keep listening!
Its Alexander Tansman's Preludio from Cavatina. The first one is Scherzino form the same Cavatina. This suites called Cavatina won the first prize in International Cpompetition for guitar in Shiena in 1951, and was dedicated to Andres Segovia.
The Maestro was deeply impressed. He remained modest about it but you can tell. Bravo Michael! Your version might actually be better. The thing is I still enjoy listening to the Maestro's old fashioned execution. Brings me back in time to another age.
This is the third movement"Scherzino " from Tansman's "Cavatina." (1951) Edition Schott: GA165. Edited by Andres Segovia. We have it in stock. Hal Leonard Cross Reference # 49010727.
