@adisa091 The reason it's so hard to explain these sort of concepts, is because they're essentially ineffable. But it's fun to try and talk about these things, 'cause it puts the horse of language through a lather. It's not an object of intellect to be described, it's an experience, which is so why it's hard to talk about. Watts speaks about it here:

As the host said those words mean something different to almost everyone who says them.
An introductory college logic class would go a long way to help this gentleman solidify his position.
The problem with the argument presented by the hosts is that they are also making an unprovable pre-supposition; namely that only the physical world exists, and anything that exists must exist in the physical world. That said think the only way of coming at an answer to this question is through philosophy, which is basically science stripped of the tools it can use only in application to the physical world.
It's not rational to believe in irrational people. Believe in rational belief, like the stuff that can be logically explained.. It's like in sci-fi movies where the clone don't realize they're clones, but instead think they're the original.
@DaFleegsta This is why I fear death in a visceral, instinctive "oh crap here it comes" way but not in a long-term, philosophical "where will I be?" way. There are countless former versions of myself who are all essentially dead. The only me who's truly screwed in all this is the me who would have come right after the final me.
Ugh... Dude... Just focus on the free will part... You went about that all wrong. Why are you talking about the unconscious/subconscious part of the mind when you should be focusing on the spirit aspect? Geez...
@DR000 You clearly have a poor definition of yourself, you cannot define the soul in material terms. As for the existence of God, you cannot rule it out either.
The soul does not exist, of course you cannot define it in material terms. Just because you can define something, doesn't mean it exists. Honestly, just watch this video, our mind is the result of brain states, nothing more.
@mrzaqxsw566 This is something atheists cannot rationalize, no point in arguing with atheists. They are deeply irrational people. Coming from an agnostic.
@HomuncuIus The only irrational/illogical statements are coming from you... your accusations make for an assuming recovering fundamentalist state of mind. Are you really agnostic or simply confused?
@HomuncuIus Being agnostic is one thing. Beleiving in absolutely no supernatural-like being of a creator or not even acknowledging one is just acenine.
@erizzable I know... it's a great way to show those theists out there that they are morons for believing that crap... who cares what they think of us-- we don't want anyone who believes to stop believing and become atheist so it's a really fun thing to do-- destroying, making them feel stupid and getting back for everything.
What's driving the electricity and chemistry within the brain? What's the mysterious force at the core of the brain? Most likely some weird and mysterious energy which created the big bang. i like to call this weird energy the soul. atheism just got pwned bitches. lol.
@henf5671 I don't know if you are serious or not, but I'm going to respond to you assuming that you are serious. Firstly, you are asking questions about the brain that either: 1) science has an explanation for (and you probably didn't research), 2) science doesn't have an explanation for, but is working on it (in which case the correct response would be "we don't know", or 3) your questions make no sense, or presupposes things. (continued)
@Periph1989 (cont.) Secondly, for the sake of argument, let's assume that there exists "some weird and mysterious energy" that involves the brain... how can you connect that with the big bang theory?? That makes no sense.
Lastly, atheism only addresses the question of whether or not there exists a god or gods. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the belief in a soul. Even if you were to prove a "soul", you still wouldn't have pwned anything. You've pwned nothing but yourself so far.
@Periph1989 i think that there is a lot more to reality than meets the eye. if science has discovered relativity, quantum mechanics, black holes, quarks, etc. than why can't "life" be equally as weird i.e. some type of afterlife? And by the way i am an atheist. There's also no requirement for an atheist to disbelieve in an afterlife. The fact that life can exist from a quantum event is both bizarre and mysterious.
@henf5671 I'm not making the claim that I know for a fact that there is no afterlife. Much the same way I don't know for a fact that there is no god or gods. (I am an agnostic weak atheist). So that makes me an agnostic weak a-afterlife-ist (or something). Until there is sufficient evidence, I can't make the claim that I believe in an afterlife.
Yes... in reality, there are weird things, but i don't understand the connection with "mysteries of the brain" and "an afterlife"...?
self awarness is prove that self I exists and that I is not provable to anybody except to yourself. Soul as religeons explain doesn't exist but spirit that is thought form is real. Again prove of existance of yourself is prove to yourself.
this is kinda retarded. matt isnt really concerned with finding truth in spirituality, hes concerned at proving it wrong. hes a world class debator and its not really about discussing these topics and maybe getting somewhere, its about these guys basically winning a debate about a subject. i love some of the topics about christianity because matt is right. its obvious and matt has a way of making it clear to understand. about this stuff... matt? are you really so sure?
@renzokata Of course he's not concerned with finding truth in spirituality. He doesn't believe in spirits. He's concerned with finding truth in reality, and you don't find it by assuming that ignorance is knowledge.
@PluralOfEverything well you think its ignorant and i know its not. ignorance is a lack of understanding. you are denying a soul exists. i can tell you that time and space do not exist in reality, are you gonna deny that too? because if you do, im gonna tell you something that will blow your mind.
@PluralOfEverything whats the smallest particle in the universe, a sub atomic particle. think of it this way, there has to be something smaller than that, maybe we can only go as far as our TECHNOLOGY can see. what about the smallest segment of time, we can take a split second and chop it down a million times and we still wouldnt have the smallest segment. it goes on and on... until INFINITY. take a second and think about that very deeply and ask yourself if time and space are real.
@renzokata So far, many scientists thinks the string may be the smallest particle of matter in the universe. Things don't get smaller infinitely. Time is another thing that, when you put a logical microscope to it, seems to get "chunky" at some point. I can think of no other way for it to be, but that doesn't mean it can't be infinite. I seriously doubt it though. Otherwise, nothing could really exist.
@PluralOfEverything so time and space is only a measurement-not a reality. time and space can actually be manipulated-ever have a second last for eternity even though the clock was still ticking? regardless of how the objective speed of time, we subjectively have our own way of interpreting it. timelessness cannot be explained so you dont know of it. you seem to have this thing where you are only stuck on science, and thats ok, your not wrong. but what im saying to you is not ignorance either.
@renzokata Time doesn't actually go by faster or slower just because your perception of it does. Other forces are required for that. Physical forces whose effects can be measured and tested.
@PluralOfEverything let me explain to you what true spirituality is, so you dont have it confused. it is about exploring the unconcious mind, there is 2 minds inside of you. the one that is concious, and the parts about yourself that aren't. maybe your body language or anything you may do and not realize it. mastery occurs when you have perfectly blended the two together into one conciousness. thats what it means to be enlightened.
@PluralOfEverything exploring the unconcious, absolutely-but what have they done about illness residing in it? there are no cures and there are no known true causes because its such a personal thing. back in the 60's psychology was making progress with people like carl jung and stranslov groff(cured a schizophrenic permanently in one night using lsd-funny huh?)-our society and its politics has placed psychology at a great halt. now we give schizos lithium which does absolutely nothing.
@renzokata while what you said sounds nice and poetic, it fails to hold water in simple argument. if you are fully aware of what you are doing, it is by definition conscious. You can't mix these two states of consciousness and unconsciousness because they are by definition contradictory. It's like saying that it is possible for something to be wet and dry at the same time.
@renzokata "what im saying to you is not ignorance either."
Actually, what you're saying is mostly - and please do excuse the phrase - horseshit.
You're filling in the stuff we don't know (and, actually, some of the stuff we DO know) with your garbled imaginings. Just because we may not have the answer to something yet doesn't mean whatever you decide to make up is valid.
@Skindoggiedog no dude, thats NOT what im doing at all. if you were 1/2 intellegent, you would have read the shit i wrote above and thought-ok-"hes got a point" but no you wanna be a stubborn prick. you think its bullshit, then go ahead and think that. stay stuck in your little box and lets just not figure shit out and think we know it all. you have fun with that.
So you don't agree that you were talking nonsense? That's a given. Unfortunately, it's still true.
I've read everything you've said here. You don't have a point. Your claim about schizophrenia is pure fantasy. Might as well have said an elephant flew using it's trunk as a propeller.
Call me all the names you like. That's not going to make you right.
Here's the thing: You getting stoned and going 'wow man this whole world is just amazing, like, consciousness is freaky, dude' isn't what I'd call 'figuring shit out'.
What I'd call 'figuring shit out' is scientists using an fMRI device to study the brain's behavior when exposed to stimuli. To compare a damaged brain's behavior to a healthy one. Etc.
Nothing you've said is consistent with anything we've ACTUALLY DISCOVERED. That's the reality here.
@Skindoggiedog hey dude, dont get pissed off at me and start making personal comments, acting like a little kid because something i said pissed you off. to tell you the truth, i have epilepsy, under an mri, my brain looks just fine. so dont sit there and act like we and specificaly YOU know everything, cuz you dont know shit man but it's your ego that is telling ya you do. listen to me, what i gotta say, and you might learn something-thats why i said that. no reason to be a dick to me.
@ivatio Not only that, but he's right about his position. The only reason anybody disagrees with him is because they don't understand what he's saying or they don't want him to be right.
Wow. Matt really pwned that guy! He brought up all of the scientific information that I would have, but he did so with rhetorical skills that are superior to my own.
Who would watch these types of shows its stupid and pointless all your arguments are invalid because if you look from the dawn of man there has been religion of some kind you can not deny this fact and you just try to hard to prove that GOD doesn't exist ergo there is always going to be arguments between Christians and Atheists and there for everyone will just have to agree to disagree...
ps. go pick on another religion like Islam u will probably start world war 3 but i know where your going.
@peachedasbro Try your threats of hell one a five-year old next time. Maybe it'll have more effect there.
And while you're at it, tell them about how Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son when your god asked him to and how you would be willing to do the same if god asked you. You would be willing to kill a child. Because it's virtuous to obey god, right? Even when he wants you to kill children? Remember, disobedience is what got Adam and Eve sent out of paradise. It's the greatest sin.
@peachedasbro " from the dawn of man there has been religion of some kind"
Yes, people have been ignorant and superstitious since the dawn of time. Religion was the first attempt at answering important questions and it was also the worst. We are smarter now. Humanity is growing up. Are you coming or are you staying in the Bronze Age threatening people with hell and spouting arguments from popularity from your ivory tower built on delusion.
@peachedasbro I dare you to say that while watching your loved ones screaming in hell because they didn't think the way your god wanted them to think.
You're not giving up. You're merely putting your fingers into your ears and shouting "I'm not listening!" over and over again, while blatantly asserting the same falsehoods are true without showing any evidence to back up your extraordinary claims.
Yeah, that'll convert more followers. Definitely. Reality will burst your bubble very soon.
@peachedasbro Yeah, just keep on asserting the existence of god and ignoring everything else that's been said. Just ignore it and that'll make god real for you. But I'm not going to take your gullible word for it that there's such a being. My standards of evidence are just a little bit higher than yours.
Oh, and according to the Bible your god already gave up on the world when he drowned the entire planet except for a chosen few on a magical mythical wooden boat. What an example of mercy...
@peachedasbro We are not the ones who have to disprove the existence of a god or gods. The burden of proof lies with the people who are claiming this being or beings exist. Until that burden of proof for these extraordinary claims is met we're justified in remaining atheistic.
No. We will not agree to disagree. We cannot both be right. One of us has to be wrong and since the burden of proof has not been met I'm saying it's you. We won't stand idly by while the religious wreck the planet.
@peachedasbro When one man says the world's billions of years old and the other says it's 6000 years old they don't have to agree to disagree. The second man is wrong.
Truth's not a matter of opinion.
When one man encounters another man in the street who claims snakes sing to him in fluent Spanish and while in the zoo nothing happens, the guy's just singing alone, they're not forced to agree to disagree: the first man can call the asylum and ask if they're missing a patient.
Soul is actually a very useful concept. It creates hope for the sycophant and fear everyone else. It's a convenient way to encourage, terrify, reward, and punish someone. The best part is - it's removed from any real world concerns... so you can get people to do some pretty insane things for their 'soul'. An untouchable leverage device. Honestly though, I do like the *poetic* concept of a soul.
I would like to see a theist explain the results of somebody who had a lobotomy. Since that person does not behave like he/she did before and doesn't have his or her distinct personality anymore, what happened to the 'soul' of that person?
Look up "Philosophical Zombie" to understand what this guy is getting at (consciousness). Anyway people have no problem saying that it's either irrelevant because it can't be proven outside one's mind, or that we just can't explain it YET. I think both of those responses are week but I just don't care anymore and that's why I call myself an agnostic.
The caller is a fool. Clearly unicorns do not look like horses. I have never seen a horse that is both pink and invisible. Case closed, next caller please.
At about 10:50 the caller admits that the Ontological Argument for God is invalid and yet, for some unknown reason, he seems to believe the OA is valid to prove the existence of the soul. I just don't know how anyone ever fell for the Ontological Argument for anything.

@DaFleegsta That's why I think our consistent consciousness is just a simulation. DaFleegsta 5 months ago 2
Its because movies are make belief.
Cloning doesn't work like that.
Cloning from a cell would mean sharing the same genetic material but not the same intelligence or experience.
Its like having the exact identical machine part of a computer but different data on your hard drive.
Crisshomes1 5 months ago
@Crisshomes1 I know how real life cloning works. I was refering to how cloning is usually portrayed in sci-fi movies to help get my message accross.

Well its because of the plot and of course it has to be something freaky about it but reality might prove wrong.
Crisshomes1 5 months ago
@DaFleegsta This is why I fear death in a visceral, instinctive "oh crap here it comes" way but not in a long-term, philosophical "where will I be?" way. There are countless former versions of myself who are all essentially dead. The only me who's truly screwed in all this is the me who would have come right after the final me.

The soul does not exist, of course you cannot define it in material terms. Just because you can define something, doesn't mean it exists. Honestly, just watch this video, our mind is the result of brain states, nothing more.

What's driving the electricity and chemistry within the brain? What's the mysterious force at the core of the brain? Most likely some weird and mysterious energy which created the big bang. i like to call this weird energy the soul. atheism just got pwned bitches. lol.
henf5671 7 months ago
@henf5671 I don't know if you are serious or not, but I'm going to respond to you assuming that you are serious. Firstly, you are asking questions about the brain that either: 1) science has an explanation for (and you probably didn't research), 2) science doesn't have an explanation for, but is working on it (in which case the correct response would be "we don't know", or 3) your questions make no sense, or presupposes things. (continued)
Periph1989 7 months ago
@Periph1989 (cont.) Secondly, for the sake of argument, let's assume that there exists "some weird and mysterious energy" that involves the brain... how can you connect that with the big bang theory?? That makes no sense.
Lastly, atheism only addresses the question of whether or not there exists a god or gods. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the belief in a soul. Even if you were to prove a "soul", you still wouldn't have pwned anything. You've pwned nothing but yourself so far.
Periph1989 7 months ago
@Periph1989 i think that there is a lot more to reality than meets the eye. if science has discovered relativity, quantum mechanics, black holes, quarks, etc. than why can't "life" be equally as weird i.e. some type of afterlife? And by the way i am an atheist. There's also no requirement for an atheist to disbelieve in an afterlife. The fact that life can exist from a quantum event is both bizarre and mysterious.
henf5671 7 months ago
@henf5671 I'm not making the claim that I know for a fact that there is no afterlife. Much the same way I don't know for a fact that there is no god or gods. (I am an agnostic weak atheist). So that makes me an agnostic weak a-afterlife-ist (or something). Until there is sufficient evidence, I can't make the claim that I believe in an afterlife.
Yes... in reality, there are weird things, but i don't understand the connection with "mysteries of the brain" and "an afterlife"...?

this is kinda retarded. matt isnt really concerned with finding truth in spirituality, hes concerned at proving it wrong. hes a world class debator and its not really about discussing these topics and maybe getting somewhere, its about these guys basically winning a debate about a subject. i love some of the topics about christianity because matt is right. its obvious and matt has a way of making it clear to understand. about this stuff... matt? are you really so sure?
renzokata 9 months ago
@renzokata Of course he's not concerned with finding truth in spirituality. He doesn't believe in spirits. He's concerned with finding truth in reality, and you don't find it by assuming that ignorance is knowledge.
PluralOfEverything 9 months ago
@PluralOfEverything well you think its ignorant and i know its not. ignorance is a lack of understanding. you are denying a soul exists. i can tell you that time and space do not exist in reality, are you gonna deny that too? because if you do, im gonna tell you something that will blow your mind.
renzokata 9 months ago
@renzokata I can experience time and space, and I can observe their effects as they are happening. So go ahead, blow my mind.
PluralOfEverything 9 months ago
@PluralOfEverything whats the smallest particle in the universe, a sub atomic particle. think of it this way, there has to be something smaller than that, maybe we can only go as far as our TECHNOLOGY can see. what about the smallest segment of time, we can take a split second and chop it down a million times and we still wouldnt have the smallest segment. it goes on and on... until INFINITY. take a second and think about that very deeply and ask yourself if time and space are real.
renzokata 9 months ago
@renzokata So far, many scientists thinks the string may be the smallest particle of matter in the universe. Things don't get smaller infinitely. Time is another thing that, when you put a logical microscope to it, seems to get "chunky" at some point. I can think of no other way for it to be, but that doesn't mean it can't be infinite. I seriously doubt it though. Otherwise, nothing could really exist.
PluralOfEverything 9 months ago
@PluralOfEverything so time and space is only a measurement-not a reality. time and space can actually be manipulated-ever have a second last for eternity even though the clock was still ticking? regardless of how the objective speed of time, we subjectively have our own way of interpreting it. timelessness cannot be explained so you dont know of it. you seem to have this thing where you are only stuck on science, and thats ok, your not wrong. but what im saying to you is not ignorance either.
renzokata 9 months ago
@renzokata Time doesn't actually go by faster or slower just because your perception of it does. Other forces are required for that. Physical forces whose effects can be measured and tested.
PluralOfEverything 9 months ago
@PluralOfEverything let me explain to you what true spirituality is, so you dont have it confused. it is about exploring the unconcious mind, there is 2 minds inside of you. the one that is concious, and the parts about yourself that aren't. maybe your body language or anything you may do and not realize it. mastery occurs when you have perfectly blended the two together into one conciousness. thats what it means to be enlightened.
renzokata 9 months ago
@renzokata Exploring the unconscious mind is called psychology.
PluralOfEverything 9 months ago
@PluralOfEverything exploring the unconcious, absolutely-but what have they done about illness residing in it? there are no cures and there are no known true causes because its such a personal thing. back in the 60's psychology was making progress with people like carl jung and stranslov groff(cured a schizophrenic permanently in one night using lsd-funny huh?)-our society and its politics has placed psychology at a great halt. now we give schizos lithium which does absolutely nothing.
renzokata 9 months ago
@renzokata It makes you wonder if they really want to cure mental illnesses. A company can make a lot more on a treatment than on a cure.
PluralOfEverything 9 months ago
@renzokata "cured a schizophrenic permanently in one night using lsd-funny"
Never happened, and you'd know this if you knew anything about the physiology of the schizophrenic brain.
What you're suggesting is the equivalent of an amputee's arm re-appearing.
Skindoggiedog 9 months ago
@renzokata while what you said sounds nice and poetic, it fails to hold water in simple argument. if you are fully aware of what you are doing, it is by definition conscious. You can't mix these two states of consciousness and unconsciousness because they are by definition contradictory. It's like saying that it is possible for something to be wet and dry at the same time.
joe1234567890i 9 months ago
@renzokata "mastery occurs when you have perfectly blended the two together into one conciousness. thats what it means to be enlightened."
No, that's what it means to be a non self-aware animal, like a worm or a slug.

Skindoggiedog 9 months ago
@Skindoggiedog no dude, thats NOT what im doing at all. if you were 1/2 intellegent, you would have read the shit i wrote above and thought-ok-"hes got a point" but no you wanna be a stubborn prick. you think its bullshit, then go ahead and think that. stay stuck in your little box and lets just not figure shit out and think we know it all. you have fun with that.
renzokata 9 months ago
@renzokata "thats NOT what im doing at all"
So you don't agree that you were talking nonsense? That's a given. Unfortunately, it's still true.
I've read everything you've said here. You don't have a point. Your claim about schizophrenia is pure fantasy. Might as well have said an elephant flew using it's trunk as a propeller.
Call me all the names you like. That's not going to make you right.
Skindoggiedog 9 months ago
@renzokata "lets just not figure shit out"
Here's the thing: You getting stoned and going 'wow man this whole world is just amazing, like, consciousness is freaky, dude' isn't what I'd call 'figuring shit out'.

Definitely. Reality will burst your bubble very soon.
viridismonasteriense 10 months ago
@viridismonasteriense Wow thanks for that i cannot give up on this world just like GOD has not given up on it thanks for that i really needed that!!!
peachedasbro 10 months ago
@peachedasbro Yeah, just keep on asserting the existence of god and ignoring everything else that's been said. Just ignore it and that'll make god real for you. But I'm not going to take your gullible word for it that there's such a being. My standards of evidence are just a little bit higher than yours.
Oh, and according to the Bible your god already gave up on the world when he drowned the entire planet except for a chosen few on a magical mythical wooden boat. What an example of mercy...
viridismonasteriense 10 months ago
@peachedasbro We are not the ones who have to disprove the existence of a god or gods. The burden of proof lies with the people who are claiming this being or beings exist. Until that burden of proof for these extraordinary claims is met we're justified in remaining atheistic.
No. We will not agree to disagree. We cannot both be right. One of us has to be wrong and since the burden of proof has not been met I'm saying it's you. We won't stand idly by while the religious wreck the planet.
viridismonasteriense 10 months ago
@peachedasbro When one man says the world's billions of years old and the other says it's 6000 years old they don't have to agree to disagree. The second man is wrong.
Truth's not a matter of opinion.
When one man encounters another man in the street who claims snakes sing to him in fluent Spanish and while in the zoo nothing happens, the guy's just singing alone, they're not forced to agree to disagree: the first man can call the asylum and ask if they're missing a patient.

@thatamazinggeek
Callirgos1 10 months ago
