So sad to see what once was a great, thriving city. I lived there for 24 years. Our country is being destroyed by our politicians and the downfall of our society. Detroit is a perfect example of it.
I'm reading all these comment but i still don't understand can someone who knows answer this. Why is so much of Detroit abandoned???
I can understand the buildings built in the late 18th - early 19th century but there's a lot of downtown buildings and structures that really don't seem bad.
Waistful spending and no value of pre-existing things is what happen to this building and many great buildings that were retired before thier time was due. They always claim these old buildings ain't up to code but look how long it's been there and it's still standing.

I drove right up to this train station about 15 years ago and walked right in. There was a police car with 2 officers parked inside. i talked to them, they advised that I not go through the building as there were usually a LOT of people living in there at any one time. I wish I's had a camera then. I heard that you cannot get near it now of you get charged with trespassing.
This city was not destroyed by True Equality as extolled by Our Blessed Forefathers in the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. Detroit was destroyed by the insidious excuse called "redistribution" as practiced by the ungodly Socialists (Now called Dems) and their unholy minions in the UAW. They must fall.
Yes and more than just Detroit will die. We have fallen into the evil clutches of the Kenyan muslim and he wants to gut what is left. The communist in chief is quite pleased with his ruination.
@TheDanbristol That's really a bit much. I fully admit that the corrupt governmental leadership in Detroit for several decades has been almost entirely Democratic, but their was a variety of factors that all seemed to coincide with one another that really did the city in. After WWII the federal government pressured manufacturers to de-centralize from cities as to decrease their risk of destruction in a nuclear was happened, 2 THE RIOTS, 3 the opening up of foreign labor markets. continued...
@TheDanbristol 4 Detroit's cultural power (Motown) relocated to LA. Everyone decent left with the jobs leaving the gristly underclass that most cities have as the majority population who didn't care for the architectural treasures that were left behind. If GM headquarters left the city would have completely died. To think, within less than 60 years, Detroit has gone from the wealthiest city per capita in the Western world to one of the poorest. A complete and total tragedy.
Buildings of historic value need to be maintained and embraced. There are a ton of abandoned properties that are not destroyed, but the Michigan Theater gets turned into a parking garage? I love Detroit, but they need to clean out the waste, just gut the place of the ugly
Like the Hudson building they will also be gone. If they are not going to restore some of these buildings, then take them down and start farm land again because it is painful to see these buildings decay.
How about the government workers in Detroit constantly extorting money from the city, rather to put it back into the city! If people think this has been a problem only over the past few years, you are sorely mistaken! I wouln'd blame the unions or the people no matter the color that live here for the destruction! It's the Detroit governments job to keep the city in order.
If You go drive around a little in Detroit , you do see alot of very old buildings lie this in need of repair but they would be awesome places fo a museum or something like that, rec center for the less privlaged kids , maybe they wouldn;t wanna bang if they could go do something constructive, a fkn shame how Detroit is a shell of what it could be with some initiative to clean it up
Looking for any one reason why this happened to Detroit is pointless. The unions played a role, along with the companies that gave in to their demands. Also one has to blame the city for letting itself become a one industry town, which left it so vulnerable when things went bad. What is needed now is a plan to remake Detroit. Any ideas?
OK maybe the city WAS destroyed by equality but if you think deeper the blacks really did ruin the city of Detroit! HONESTLY do you see me coming into your house and throwing napalm on your carpet the place where you live!?!?!?! I am 20 minutes north of Detroit and its sad just driving down there in general...To think that not even 50 years ago that city was beautiful and safe to walk the streets! It took more than 50 years to make the city and it took a few to ruin it...goddamn racist uprisings
i blame the unions. you cant make money when you are paying people 30 dollars an hour to sweep a floor. or garantee people full benefits and pay for the rest of their lives. there are a lot of wealthy people in michigan and i heard from a reliable sourse that a german car company wanted to put up a factory here but they went south because of the unions and because of the taxes michigan wanted. the place the went gave them land for their factory. thats what we need to do here.
@externalpower I agree that Michigan has high taxes and unions are not the greatest thing in the world, but regardless of that, I don't think it's right to just let a city just crumble away like this. There are people there who can't get out. I used to live in Detroit for almost 7 years. It's just downright depressing.
@whynotzoidburg unions may have their bad points. But at one time unions single handedly improved the quality of life for nearly every working class American. It's unions that FORCE companies to pay their workers a decent wage (what their entitled to). It's unions that FORCE companies to provide healthcare, and a safe (as can be) working environment. In the past, if you were healthy enough to work, you did so for every waking hour just to barely survive. If you go hurt (very likely).
@salemcripple My step-dad is a field engineer and travels to a lot of places all over the country. He's worked at places that have unions and places that don't, and by his opinion (not saying it's right or wrong) almost every man or woman he has met that does work within a union are the laziest people he has ever seen. They get paid high wages to do mediocre work, and complain when someone has to come and do the job correctly but is not in the union. We live in NC, here union are illegal....
@salemcripple and I can sometimes see why, and other times I can't. I think that if you got the right people within a union that actually want to do the right thing, which is unlikely, then unions could very be the best thing since sliced bread, but as for now, they are paying workers too much for too little and no one seems to care enough to do something about it.
I'm doing my dissertation on detroit " the dying city, if anyone has anyone info, past or present photos i would very much appreciate it!. .im living in Ireland
@1967mustanggta The truth is, in the early 1900s, auto company recruiters went to the deep south and offered blacks decent paying jobs...much more than they made there, but less than whites in Detroit. As a result, many blacks came to Detroit, Flint Saginaw. But there was still unspoken segregation.
After the riots, and after the big 3 started moving jobs out of MI, things crumbled.
i grew up in detroit. what really killed detroit was the '67 riots. that's when the whites, business and money fled the city. the final blow was the down turn of the auto industry. sounds simplistic but it's the truth.
@barryblow22 The unions no longer have the power now that cheap labor from abroad is involved. Sure you can't outsource construction but alot of sites complain about forign labor. The only viable unions now are govenment workers. And I think they might lose their pensions. This is what all that we are one world globalism crap gets us.
I'm not sure where people actually live but the parts I've seen (grosse pointe to downtown - downtown to DFW) are abandoned, and it's obvious there's a LOT of work to be done in demolition. Jobs! Heavy industry has exited N America, and no matter what we think of that, it's not coming back.
You blacks need to stop your fake ghetto and hiphop culture. Stop killing and robbing each other. Instead of using all your energy being a hood-rat, why don't you put some of that energy into fixing up and taking care of your neighborhoods. Have some F@CKING pride in yourself. Stop waiting for someone to come and bail you out - giving you my hard EARNED tax dollars! Stop voting for Dems & Libs who for the past 40 years have done absolutely nothing for you. Move - get a job somewhere else!
@imbigd40 Detroit is not just blacks it has been a crap hole since the 50s and 60s due to the riots and thousands people running away and letting their houses rot BTW the past 8 years we had a crap load of reps and cons doing nothing If you're really this stupid just stop posting. Clearly you have no idea what you are talking about.
Look apparently you are another - our government will help us - person who will wait for a handout. I moved from Ohio to AZ 3 years ago because of the economy. I left everyone I knew and know to move to a place where there is at least some work to be had. You just sit and wait for the government to come in with their handouts and all you are going to get is fat and lazier. So don't go preaching to me how stupid I am. And yes Ohio's cities are ruined too by years of Dems and blacks.
now, i agree with what you are saying to some extent. but remember, the economy in michigan was based solely on manufacturing.. It was the federal govt that took those jobs away. dont believe me? ask all the newly employed Mexicans that work for GM now.
What Detroit NEEDS is for it's residents to step up. Sweep your street at the curb, paint your house, cut your grass, report crime, stop robbin and stealin from your neighbors. STOP WAITING FOR SOMEONE ELSE Only when it's citizens care about where they live and what it looks like will the city come back.
Whats up with race. race aint got nothign to do with nothing. We all got problems. Yall actin like BLACKS are just so bad and gonm rob you any second. All if us ain't like that
No, it isn't the old train station or an opera house; it's the Michigan Theater, one of the premiere movie palaces of the 30's-50's. It was later a live R&B venue, then an upscale restaurant, then a rock venue before standing empty for years then being gutted for parking. The theater architecture still visible was left because tearing it out would have been too expensive and could have compromised the stability of the structure. Too bad it wasn't saved as was the Fox Theater, it's a sad loss.
Like it's not suicide for the blacks that live there too? I am white and lived in Delray, and it wasn't just my family's house getting shot up. So I think no *person* would ever move there, but I don't think that's the problem. I think it's more an issue of getting out, which is something every family on our street desperately wanted to do.
Still, I do love our city. We have some great people here. =)
to Gabepaullikegirls: no white person with any sense or concern for his family would ever move into an area like that....it would be just plain suicide
I have lived in Detroit all my life.. i have been to EVERY state in the US... and yet Detroit is one city, where you can drive 40 mpg over the speed limit w/o getting pulled over, where you can speed down the street and race against the cops! thats always fun... the one place, where if you step out of our house in the wrong time of the night, you'll end up mugged.
Detroit, Michigan doesn't actually have a lot of violence like it used to be... the town is so broke that they cant afforded to fix the buildings that are abandoned. So the factories, homes and old private schools, or day care centers even some orphanages get left behind..some are haunted and left to rot but never bull dozed down.. the city just keeps them as relics or something. poor ass town.. high pollution contents, and very bad economy.
People who don't really know or understand Detroit (sorry a short visit doesnt count) have no business commenting on its problems or its solutions, end of story. I might have thought or said some of the same disparaging things about the place before I lived in Michigan, but I now know Michigan, Detroit and its environs has more heart and soul and true sense of culture than most places I've lived. It has challenges and shortcomings of its own making, no doubt, but that is hardly the whole pic.
ok the people leaving hate comments about detroit r REALLY PISSING ME OFF!!!! LIKE THERE'S NO BUILDINGS LIKE THAT IN ANY OTHER CITY?? YEAH THERE IS!! detroit may not be the nicest, most safe city. yeah, there's abandoned buildings. there r in philly too thats for sure! you people need to shut up!!!! why dont u move to detroit and see the nice places of it? like theres these roads and little parks and buildings that r nice. and you're gonna find ghetto everywhere!! so shut up!!!
wat are thay liek there was on abandond 4 storey building where i live but its liek the only good one how many buildings and skyscrapers are abandond ?
What is Detroit and the state of Michigan doing to help themselves? The people keep electing far-left Democrats - many of them incompetent criminals - who think the answer is to tax anyone who they can into oblivion to pay the rest of the population to sit on their asses and collect food stamps. And then they're shocked when the hard-working people and business owners - who have the timerity to believe that the goal of a business is to turn a profit - leave the state in droves.
If that's what you think the problem is, you have obviously never taken 5 minutes away from watching Fox to see the reality of the situation. The majority of the people of Detroit are hard working citizens who spend their lifetimes working 9-5 on assembly lines in auto plants for measly pay who are in turn losing their jobs and failing to support their families because far-right fuckwits like you advocate lower taxes which equals less money for civil services, welfare and education.
It is no coincidence that virtually all of the poorest major cities in America have been under Democratic control for decades. The thing you must understand is that higher taxes does not equal higher revenues. The Laffer curve describes this relationship. If you have high taxes, unionization, socialist welfare systems, there is no way that a business can be successful. Keep drinking your Kool-Aid, eating watermelon and fried chicken, and voting for Democrats if you like it how it is.
to Rubba: get real....what working person wants to "pay more taxes" when most of us are barely able to keep up with "health insurance premiums". If I am working myself to death.....your telling me I should PAY MORE TAXES to give people on welfare? You are an idiot.....or a welfare recipiant....or both
im sick of fucks like u inkey2. there are WAYYYYYYYYY more things tax dollars go to than just welfare, as a matter of a fact, it only a accounts for less than 2-3% of state budgets. wanna know where taxes really go too? munical funds, city and state services(law enforcement firefighters etc) and armed forces. shit, i bet u didnt even know that those corner stores with arabs u see was paid by tax dollars did u? and plus, they dont pay tax. and u think welfare is a problem? the least.
u know im not on welfare, yet u try to take a cheap shot like that. typical racist fucks. and like i said before, welfare is the least of your "tax dollars" worries...
Taxes go to the city and school districts with programs like welfare and medicare/medicaid. Paying taxes isn't all bad, you're just spewing right-wing political rhetoric. It's not a partisan issue, it's an integrity issue. There's corruption in both parties, and when it comes down to it, the only thing that really matters is personal integrity and positive community commitment from political leaders, be it Democrat or Republican.
I would really like to go into the depot sometime....does anyone have information about the best way to enter/exit? Are there many issues with police? Ive been outside the building before, and Im in AWE. EPIC infiltration!!
im making a report of it i live by it in dearborn only half a hour away bro so scary it used 2 be a train station until 1988 they tried selling it and buyers declined the buy so it was permantly closed down on january 5,1988
i been in the train station a few times. its the shit at night. if u go u need to have people with u cuz there are crack heads an other people running around in there. u can get in under a vydock were sheet metal is torn off and grafetti says troys house. the floor has holes in it and the stairs has missing steps. go all the way to the roof because its a beautiful veiw of detroit. i luv the city. it has its good and bad spots.

The communist in chief is quite pleased with his ruination.
joesphx19 1 year ago 3
@TheDanbristol That's really a bit much. I fully admit that the corrupt governmental leadership in Detroit for several decades has been almost entirely Democratic, but their was a variety of factors that all seemed to coincide with one another that really did the city in. After WWII the federal government pressured manufacturers to de-centralize from cities as to decrease their risk of destruction in a nuclear was happened, 2 THE RIOTS, 3 the opening up of foreign labor markets. continued...
hop208 1 week ago

Looking for any one reason why this happened to Detroit is pointless. The unions played a role, along with the companies that gave in to their demands. Also one has to blame the city for letting itself become a one industry town, which left it so vulnerable when things went bad. What is needed now is a plan to remake Detroit. Any ideas?

i blame the unions. you cant make money when you are paying people 30 dollars an hour to sweep a floor. or garantee people full benefits and pay for the rest of their lives. there are a lot of wealthy people in michigan and i heard from a reliable sourse that a german car company wanted to put up a factory here but they went south because of the unions and because of the taxes michigan wanted. the place the went gave them land for their factory. thats what we need to do here.
externalpower 2 years ago
@externalpower I agree that Michigan has high taxes and unions are not the greatest thing in the world, but regardless of that, I don't think it's right to just let a city just crumble away like this. There are people there who can't get out. I used to live in Detroit for almost 7 years. It's just downright depressing.
whynotzoidburg 1 year ago
@whynotzoidburg unions may have their bad points. But at one time unions single handedly improved the quality of life for nearly every working class American. It's unions that FORCE companies to pay their workers a decent wage (what their entitled to). It's unions that FORCE companies to provide healthcare, and a safe (as can be) working environment. In the past, if you were healthy enough to work, you did so for every waking hour just to barely survive. If you go hurt (very likely).
salemcripple 1 year ago
@whynotzoidburg pt2. (damn youtube limits) then you're just SOL and the company would most likely fire you.
salemcripple 1 year ago
@salemcripple My step-dad is a field engineer and travels to a lot of places all over the country. He's worked at places that have unions and places that don't, and by his opinion (not saying it's right or wrong) almost every man or woman he has met that does work within a union are the laziest people he has ever seen. They get paid high wages to do mediocre work, and complain when someone has to come and do the job correctly but is not in the union. We live in NC, here union are illegal....
whynotzoidburg 1 year ago
@salemcripple and I can sometimes see why, and other times I can't. I think that if you got the right people within a union that actually want to do the right thing, which is unlikely, then unions could very be the best thing since sliced bread, but as for now, they are paying workers too much for too little and no one seems to care enough to do something about it.

@1967mustanggta You don't think that when GM moved all the good paying jobs to Mexico that had ANYTHING to do with it?
Gunfighter1b 1 year ago
@1967mustanggta The truth is, in the early 1900s, auto company recruiters went to the deep south and offered blacks decent paying jobs...much more than they made there, but less than whites in Detroit. As a result, many blacks came to Detroit, Flint Saginaw. But there was still unspoken segregation.
After the riots, and after the big 3 started moving jobs out of MI, things crumbled.
And things will not be the same, anytime soon.

And yes Ohio's cities are ruined too by years of Dems and blacks.

Too bad it wasn't saved as was the Fox Theater, it's a sad loss.
wigbomb 2 years ago
Like it's not suicide for the blacks that live there too? I am white and lived in Delray, and it wasn't just my family's house getting shot up. So I think no *person* would ever move there, but I don't think that's the problem. I think it's more an issue of getting out, which is something every family on our street desperately wanted to do.
Still, I do love our city. We have some great people here. =)

DFDalton1962 2 years ago 2
If that's what you think the problem is, you have obviously never taken 5 minutes away from watching Fox to see the reality of the situation. The majority of the people of Detroit are hard working citizens who spend their lifetimes working 9-5 on assembly lines in auto plants for measly pay who are in turn losing their jobs and failing to support their families because far-right fuckwits like you advocate lower taxes which equals less money for civil services, welfare and education.
Rubba0Band0Man 2 years ago
It is no coincidence that virtually all of the poorest major cities in America have been under Democratic control for decades. The thing you must understand is that higher taxes does not equal higher revenues. The Laffer curve describes this relationship. If you have high taxes, unionization, socialist welfare systems, there is no way that a business can be successful. Keep drinking your Kool-Aid, eating watermelon and fried chicken, and voting for Democrats if you like it how it is.
